Country shoes with double leather or commando soles work with jeans I think, likewise suede dress shoes. Brown is definitely better but as long as the shoes are not shiny, eg oiled/greasy leather or nubuck, and they have a bit of thickness in the soles, black could work imo.

I"m thin and short man. I notice that skinny jeans in dark wash can work very good with dark brown shoe (sorry i dont like light brown, too much contrast for me) . But the best are slim fit jeans with a little tailored leg and hem . Its more classic style .

For me it comes down to having an eye for fashion, your personal taste. and following your own mind. Because even in fashion you have leaders and followers. Over the years I have lost count of the number of times I have been stopped by complete strangers including business professionals on the street and complimented on my style when it comes to fashion, especially casual dress. I am not a follower when it comes to fashion.
