fun fact: the dye that the Greeks and Romans used to make things purple smelled absolutely terrible because it was harvested from some kind of crab/shellfish. The smell of the dye would stick to the cloth, it never went away. (Modern researchers have replicated the dye process with the shellfish and the fabric still smelled like rotting shellfish ten years later). So all the fancy people in ancient Greece wearing purple, would have smelled terrible. The price of a status symbol. I love purple but only the very cool tones. Anything with too much red in it makes me look sickly.
@celestialstar81152 жыл бұрын
It may make you look sickly as certain shades may not go hand in hand with your skin hair eye color and undertone of them. For example I am a deep autumn in color palette. Only deep aubergine shades work for me. Anything other than that makes me look extremely dull

I gave always loved purple and seem to be becoming more attracted to green than I used to be. The difficulty is finding clothes in the right shades for my skintone. As availability can vary from one year to the next, when I find something I need to buy it there and then as I have no idea when that colour will return to the shops.

Purple is my favorite color and I have purple in my decor and my wardrobe, so I'm very comfortable working with it. My favorite is to mix purples of varying shades (not just light and dark). I always say that purples like to live together. It's the only color I know that you can throw together with varying shades of the red side and blue side and it be harmonious, unlike greens or oranges, or yellows that aren't as easy to wear together.

I have trouble believing that purple is all that rare in nature. Apart from lilacs and lavendar, there are violets, wisteria, morning glory and heather - to name just a few purple blooming plants. Moreover, many of those flowers show up in groups: lilac and wisteria flowers hang in big bunches, morning glory (which can have different coloured flowers, including purple) is a vine that literally grows like a weed, and both violets and heather carpet large areas in the wild, creating a spectacular effect when they bloom. In fact, the Polish word for September (which is about the time when heather flowers in Poland) can be loosely translated as The Month of Heather.

What a great video! Looking at colors in nature is definitely my favorite way to think about color-mixing. The part that really got me thinking was your section on purple and brown. Hi Audrey, Thank you for your beautiful and inspiring video's! They are little works of art in themselves, and I really enjoy watching them! I have to be honest that at first, the examples in your colour videos had me a little confused because at first glance it might seem that actually almost anything goes, while in my experience similar colour combinations might sometimes look really beautiful, while at other times slightly miss the mark. looking at your examples I think the underlying explanation might be true? ( not a fashion expert by any means, but I do have a background in painting) 2 matching undertones seems to be the most natural way to match colours while still keeping an interesting difference ( for example, a beautiful cool, dark purple combined with a cool dark emerald green works great because they share both a black and cool undertone, while the same purple with a warm green might feel a bit off) 3 matching undertones, creates a true tonal effect (although the more similar the colours in the outfit become, the more apparent the contrast to skin and hair become, so with my honey coloured hair, a purple outfit would never be truly tonal, while for someone with your cool, black hair colour it might be). 0 matching undertones in common usually works very well because it creates a full contrast ( like your gorgeous lavender top with cool and white undertones combined with your true black pants in the video) 1 undertone in common seems to be the most difficult, because there may be too much similarity for a full contrast, but too much disparity for a coherent look, creating the biggest risk for a mismatch. (like a cool dark purple with a warm dark green; they have a matching black undertone, while also having a clashing warm/cold undertone contrast, which confuses the eye) I think pulling off 1 matching undertone works best either if you wear it ironically (like a warm purple pastel colour with a bright orange), or if the second colour is a true colour (like true black, white, red etc) so there is no additional undertone that clashes (for example a lavender with a true white) I'd love to hear if you would agree! As I said, I'm not a fashion expert at all, but my "theory" did help me to look with a different eye at my own wardrobe, and see why combinations do or don't work. hugs!

What a great video! My rule with purple is it has to be in a very high quality fabric, preferably something natural. If it's in a polyester or a less than beautiful fabric, it starts to look cheap. In a dark color, cheaper fabrics don't shout I'm cheap the way purples do. I love purple, but it has to be with either a classic outfit or combined with colors like you are showing. I mean that's just my taste.

Purple is my favorite color and I wouldn’t say it’s rare in nature. You have jacaranda trees in Portugal and South America. In the USA we have wisteria bushes, lilac trees, hydrangeas, allium, iris, pansy and lavender. In the grocery store I see purple tulips, carnations, roses, orchids, hyacinth, calla Lily, gladiolus and zinnia. Those are the most common flowers I see a lot, but there are tons of smaller purple flower that people use for landscaping.
