A fantastic tip about wearing colors that may not compliment your skin tone as shoes, pants or accessories! I love green but very rarely find tops that look good on me, I’m definitely going to look for some green pants 😁

You did a wonderful job explaining what is a very complex topic. You have to experiment with color and see what works for you. I love color and certain colors like red always make me feel terrific. Black is awful on me and I use navy as one of my go to neutrals. When you put together an outfit and it makes you look and feel great, that confidence will shine through.

Color is so very interesting to wear and over time, one can begin to say; I am beginning to get this! what works is a combination of possibilities, like you have mentioned. Knowing your essential core colors, and what contrasts you like to wear is a very interesting and worthwhile discovery. That occurs over time, so do not be too hard on yourself as you realize a few past mistakes. I generally like contrast in my appearance and my wardrobe allows these items in. As long as I am working from a core color understanding then things are easier. I like how you mentioned that different textures also can be considered. Again, over time, favorite fabrics and textures are discovered to work, at least in my case. I like core colors in; white, navy and kaki/tan. Accent colors; yellow and coral. Thank you for this discussion and putting yourself out there for us.

Great tips! Rather than thinking of my color "season" as restrictive, I find it helps me keep my wardrobe from growing out of hand and saves time and money when shopping. It also helps keep the items interchangeable. Perhaps it's easier for me than some people - from as far back as I can remember, I've never liked colors that I later found were not in my color temperature. Learning of the split-primary color theory several years ago was also enlightening.

Great video! I’m big on colour. I’m a “winter” but some winter colours don’t suit me. I look anemic in white and if I ever wear it I have people asking me if I’m feeling okay all day. But I do like white pants in summer. Red is another colour I need to be really careful with. I look sick in a true red, but a very dark shade of red or burgundy is fabulous. The thing I don’t like about traditional colour analysis is that some colours that should suit me don’t. But it has taught me that I need to wear cool colours. Black and many bright colours look amazing and I feel most confident in bright jewel coloured shades of green, blue and purple. I recently bought a dress in several different shades of green and I can’t wait to wear it.

Love this video!!! Color is so important to understand and play with. Your approach...with outfit examples...makes this obvious. I love neutrals, but love colors as well. I do have a very warm undertone in my face. I choose red/orange lip color and use scarves with some warm tones and cool tones to transition into the cool tone colors I love....like light blue....or lavenders. A red lip color with a blue base ages my skin...that is what I do avoid. I use Trinny London's, Swainy or Linda Rodin's, Tough Tomato....sometimes over a warm terra-cotta lip color if I need more "depth". The lip color is where warm/cool tones make the biggest difference. The rest is play!

I LOVE your red shirt. So happy and flattering, although I know it's outside your neutrals. One way to think of complementary colors is to consider university or sport team logos. They often pick exact opposites on the color wheel--purple and gold, orange and blue, etc. They make a statement but aren't restful to the eye for day-to-day life.
@AlyssaBeltempo5 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh what a great point about uni logos! So smart thanks for sharing and the kind comment! xx

One tip I would add is to not underestimate brown. Even though it is usually considered a neutral, it is a mix of all three primary colors and will often have a certain color as an undertone. This is great if you are looking for a toned down version of that color. For example, I love to wear an all blue outfit and then add a brown belt with an orange undertone. It is disguised as a neutral, but it adds just enough contrast to make the blue outfit look extra blue in comparison.

Hi Alyssa! Such fun and informative video. As always. Love your bright thrifted shirt on you. What a terrific find, eh. I love neutrals, but people always tell me that I'm not afraid of colour. I do tend to favour 2-3 main colours each season. And I completely agree with you on just putting the colour against your face rather than discarding it off the bat because we have a concept of what we can and can't wear. I bought a beautiful llama wool scarf yesterday and surprised myself by choosing a different colour than I though would work. I'm a colour wearer, but most of my closet is grey and neutral. I wear a lot of grey, but when I feel like playing, I LOVE pairing two colours. Usually my colours are not bright or high contrast. I just bought a few things that I felt were missing from my fall wardrobe and these were the colours: - dark teal - faded navy - light grey and bright yellow striped - light grey - dark grey - burgundy I'm a soft summer, by the way. I kept trying to find something flattering in purple but they all made me look sick. Maybe I'll look for some leggings or a belt! Lavender shoes would be so fun, too, but super hard to find... My rule is... don't knock it before you try it!! Have fun mixing whatever you want, whether it's patterns or colours. Pick colours that flatter you near your face and clothing that fits well and you can do almost anything you like. 😊

You could do the hanger trick, that way your not actually making a decision but you know what you wear. The hanger trick is where you start off with all your hangers facing the "wrong" way. Then as you wear things you put the hangers back the right way. Then after 3 months, 6 months or even a year you donate everything that is still facing the wrong way. The longer you do it the less likely your going to throw out your only coat because it's June.

I'm a fan of color, too! What I'm trying this year is to pick out my 5 favorite colors that coordinate/contrast nicely with each other. This was pretty easy for me because I already knew that I favored certain colors. My colors are Navy, Magenta, Emerald, Mustard, and Plum. I kept my neutrals (and a couple of errant favorites in olive and rust for the fall), but put all the rest in boxes at the beginning of the year. First of all, my closet looks so cool, all color-blocked with my favorites. And secondly, getting dressed is much easier since everything complements each other. Best of all, since I know these colors look great on me and with each other, I can make more thoughtful buying decisions. I was super-stoked this spring when I found a beautiful floral print dress with ALL five colors on it! I can't think of any pieces in the boxes that I would want to add back next year, but I may rotate other colors in and out of my wardrobe. It's been a really fun execise!

Since I've trimmed the size of my wardrobe I do have to be selective about the range of colors I use, but prints & accessories are a great way to add in "extra" colors. Fantastic Alyssa. Loved this interesting topic on colours. What do you call a true red?? My answer is blue based. Have a great week. Love Bev xx

Big fan of color; I really love the analogous color look. Didn’t you get that shirt last summer on shopping trip with mom? So flattering!

Thanks Karen, I love analogous looks too:) Yes! It was a vintage find last year :) Thanks for watching!

Well done...I find color, as I am sure many do, a challenge to do well....adding one piece is easy but getting into color blocking, mixing tones, and crumbs the scary analogous is pretty intimidating ....LOL...you helped enormously to break down the mechanics so it is easier to follow and create...Big Hugs....hope you are not tooo cold yet...

Alyssa, I love your videos. I have a question, how big is your wardrobe? How many Pieces do you recommend we buy per year ( or Season)? I’m trying to get a reference point, not criticize. I’m working toward minimal, but an fearful of getting too lean.

Colour! Boom! Nice job! (I can appreciate the work you put into this; how do you find the time to do videos in your daily life? You inspire me with a kick in the pants/jeans...) I personally wear neutrals and my colours are in scarves (I have too many...NOT), jewellery and purses. Thanks!

Wonderful information Alyssa! I felt like I was back in my color theory class, lol! Yes I love color and wear them as neutrals constantly! What I need in my closet are more neutrals! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! 🍁 🍁 🍁

2:17 Justine suggested this app called colourgrab for Android users. I don't remember the one for iPhones though. There you can see the amount of red, blue and green.. and initially the app is confusing.. but then you get the hang of it
