I think the hook is meant to put on one of the bootlaces so that the putees don't separate from the boot. In my experience it can also be useful to fold the putee in half as you wrap around the middle of the calf, it tightens them up and makes them look a bit neater.

This may very well be the reason! It makes perfect sense if you hook the lace itself rather than the knot. Don't know why I didn't think of that haha

No biggie, those are a lot of letters jumbled together, but it’s Marschstiefel. Not Marschentiefel. Marsh like, well, a marsh. Shtee like thee but with a ‘sh’ sound instead of a ‘th’ sound. Don’t forget the t after the ‘sh’ sound though. Add to that the ‘fle’ sound from trifle. Marsh-shtee-fle

I am late here, but imho your doing it the wrong way, you have to up ur trousers a bit and fold it to be as tight as possible before putting the puttees, then if you want them to hold longer and better you have to fold the puttees on the front of your leg, it will embrace your calf better. The hook is there to fix it on the shoes, maybe on the lace, some puttees have hooks to fix on the side of the shoe, it depends. I'd also like to point out that puttees were also used in the french army and became the official legwear from early 1915 until WW2. The fact that the english speaking community systematically doesn't take into account one of the most prominent belligerents of this war, ecpecially the one on whose territory it was fought always surprise me.

are you able to put them on with the jackboots?
@Wolfof19183 жыл бұрын
Puttees were issued as a response to a lack of jackboots, definitely wouldn’t recommend trying to use them, probably wouldn’t look too great

I agree with you that puttees are kinda a pain in the ass. In my opinion I hate to sit down and have to wrap them up and it’s like a buy coffee filter on your leg. It’s just ugly af. And water easily gets into your boots. For me personally my impression is US ARMY 1919 80th division 317th regiment. And I had to spend 5 days digging for photos of soldiers wearing leggings post war because that’s my most preferred thing to wear. But your video was very good. Keep it up bro.

1:26 Marschstiefel (Marsch-Stiefel), not Marshentiefel. Love your video, but your pronounciation gave me a good laugh. But on the other hand, if I try to pronounce Squirrel I also fail miserably, most probably.
