I like how you explain flux core welding. I am getting ready to begin some flux core welding over the weekend. On some videos I've seen where someone is tacking the parts together, they will emphasize that you should clean the flux off the weld before continuing with the full weld. But in a number of other videos, like this one, it seems that you can weld a series of tacks which helps the metal cool down without having to clean off the flux each time. So I am just trying to understand the whole process here. Any help would be appreciated!
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
Typically you do want to clean off each weld before continuing but sometimes its not possible so as long as you are not letting the weld fully cool, you can pull out all the flux at the end when you do a final pass. When doing body work, you cant do a final pass without warping the panel so weld your tacks about an inch apart, clean the metal and then offset the next set of tacks and repeat until you finish welding the panel
@rickl66972 жыл бұрын
After welding 3 sides ok it maybe that the metal is so hot you need to turn down your amps or wait for it to cool down.

I know that your excellent detailed explanations never leave gaps 👲 👲 , but I didn't know if you had removed any slag between strikes ? Is it the wire being used or just me ?
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
The wire has a lot to do with it but also the time in between each strike. If you strike before the weld fully cools, you can manipulate the weld so that you have minimal slag. Before doing the final pass over it, I do clean it all off first since now the metal is strong enough to hold a weld up.

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to teach an old dog (me) new tricks and am struggling. When filling in holes is there any advantage to grinding the welds in between bridges?
@jeremyoshea7941 Жыл бұрын
Quick question I’m dodge guy to, had a 68 a108 , are you welding back over the slag at the end of the video? Also I noticed you stand off was about a inch, I know your not working with gas like mig welding so does that matter
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
For thin metal, it doesn't really matter if you weld over the slag. As soon as the weld pool begins, it'll push the other contaminates out of the way and off to the sides. After that you just grind it smooth if needed. You want to be about 3/8" away from the weld pool. Although flux core isn't that picky with distance, gas welding is a different story. I only weld far away while filming so you can see what I'm doing.
@SomeoneIsAlwaysMovingOnTheSurf Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the tips, I have a question in regards to slag. Does slag form right away after releasing the trigger or does it take a sec or two after the glow disappears to form. For example at 4:05 you can keep welding on top without removing slag as long as you do it right after the glow?
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
Good question, slag is continuously forming and floating to the top as you weld. You technically cant weld directly over slag because the slag breaks the ground conection so you would have to start the weld off the slag and then crossover through the slag. For something structual, I wouldn't recommend doing thos but for thin metal like fencing or body panels, this is fine.

Thanks for the techniques👍. I'm training myself at the moment. I was playing with filling holes yesterday before I saw this vid. Actually had good success going around and building weld inward 🤷♂️. I see you are NOT using the gas cone on your gun. What exactly is the attachment you are using? 🤔
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
theyre a cover to protect the bare brass in the gun when not using the gas cone. The make seeing your welds a lot easier. They look like this, I'm sure you can find similar ones for your exact machine online www.harborfreight.com/gasless-flux-core-nozzle-set-2-pc-63795.html

Some good solid advice, but aren't slag inclusions an issue when doing multiple passes without slag removal from the previous pass?
@NightWrencher2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you are welding, if its something structural, then you'll want those welds as clean as possible in between passes. If you're welding sheet metal, it doesnt matter too much.

@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
Oh geez. You need to go pick up a few pieces of scrap from a local recycler to practice on. For very thin metals, turn down the wire speed and turn down the heat. Tack weld the area all the way around, clean it up with a wire brush then weld a bead over it.
@blank_URL3 жыл бұрын
correct me if i'm wrong, to my knowledge if it took more than one second for it turn gray than it is no good. 6:28
@NightWrencher3 жыл бұрын
The glowing means its over 900 degrees F but theres no spec stating it cant be red for over a sec. Thicker materials for example with stay glowing for several seconds because the added material can hold more heat. If you are worried about over heating the metal, you have to look at the area around the weld to turn dark black and not the weld itself.

Since I have been able to read and write for the majority of my life, software like Grammarly is so meaningless to me, lol. But yes, for amateurs, an app that automatically checks your grammar (including which words should and shouldn't be capitalized), is useful for beginners. You just can't beat a good internet flex to complete strangers 💪🏻

I took the nozzle off and installed a rubber cover instead since I'm not using gas, I don't need the nozzle. Easier to see
@SpaceMonkey231012 жыл бұрын
There is a nozzle on his gun, but it's smaller than the normal MIG tip. You can buy these nozzles specifically for flux core welding. The normal MIG tip is designed as a shroud to direct gas towards the weld. Flux core doesn't need that, so the smaller tip is better because it lets you see what you're doing better.
