I follow Bad Chad (he likes gap) and a lot of other welders, but you really have a knack for teaching this stuff. You also convinced me to not leave a gap because you don't always have that option when welding up an old car.

Everything is great on set... but here in the New England area cars with previous repairs and general hackery then having to replace panels is not so simple. Factory uses glue with welds or laser welds. Then you have cavity wax inside rust prone areas from the factory. All these things make welding metal that sometimes becomes thinner than you'd like...real difficult. That's where a pro spot is gonna be a good option. Mig welding is still a useful tool but autobody has moved more towards specialized equipment, to do panel replacement at a higher quality than the weekend warriors. Try a video replacing a rocker and inner rocker and show how to remove the things that make welding tough. Then I'll be super impressed. AND get ICAR to sign off on the repair also. Thanks.

For such a big and successful company it's hard to fathom how a supposedly professionally made video could look like it was filmed using convicts and cameramen with Parkinson's. Make another video that does not make the viewer ill while watching. I did like the spot weld attachment tip. So you did at least make a sale.

Not a bad video, but to be realistic, you won't have your quarter panel laying on a bench. You really need to show the challenges of lining up the panels and weld without having anything behind the panel as in many cases, there won't be a way to get behind it.

From a beginner's point of view, I appreciate how basic this video is. Showing the challenges of lining up and welding panels is a great idea for the next, more advanced, video.

Old comment, don’t care. Anyways... You’re speaking as if someone watching this video is going to be replacing a rusted out floor on a car or rusted out strut towers... This is an introductory level video and has provided a lot of excellent tips to help out the beginners. “Not a bad video”... Don’t see yours anywhere.

You can line up with magnets. They also make seam jigs that don't go behind the panel. Plus you want to tack in areas that need to get pulled in, first. Then you can open the sections that don't with a cutting wheel. The process is essentially the same. You're not making a puddle so orientation really doesn't matter. For weak or very think metal you're going to need a copper backer or a spot welder. There's just no way to not blow through on weak metal with mig.

Hey guys, thanks for the very informative videos. I now own a Eastwood 175 Mig welder and am enjoying it. I have the small spot weld clamp and the spot weld tip as well. I do have a set of the larger clamps from another source but I have a suggestion that I think would be of benefit for larger panel work and that is to take the end of the small spot weld clamp and adapt it to the larger clamp so you can spot weld a large panel that the small clamp cannot reach. I would buy such a clamp along with the other ones and simply move the spot weld clamp along the weld such as I would with the smaller one. I don't think this would be a major undertaking to accomplish. Of course I would expect my first one to be free for the suggestion. lol Let me know what you think

Great video set. I do the butt oanel to panel and liked hiw showed up amos n liwer wire speed with fast trigger control. I also made my own copper backers that slid onto slap dolly to avoid blow through. I have REAL bad hearing and heard every word said. Good Job!!

I have a 175. I'm trying to weld up holes on my brand new AMD firewall 19 gauge, i bought the sheet metal kit 19 gauge from Eastwood also. I clean both metal areas, make a circle to fit in the hole, use a welding magnet to keep it in place. Start at the recommended settings on a scrap pieces on the bench, they weld fine. Nice and flat. I bring that to the car and the first spot i blow thru. So i keep very slightly going down in voltage first, then wire speed. Until i get a crappy ball on top with no penetration. I am using 1/4 stick out, cut the .25 L-56 Lincoln wire to get a fresh start. Gas is 75/25 @ 18 cfh. The tip is about 1/16 back from the edge of the cup. Ground is on clean bare metal as close as i can get it. I can weld 1/4 or 1/8 tubing fine and get great welds. When i try this on my car's original floor patching a hole it's worse, i keep chasing blow thru holes. What setting work best have you found using this welder. Don't know what i'm doing wrong, Please help.

If the metal is rusty, you can experience blow-thru much quicker. Have you tried using a copper back? a backer should really help prevent blow-thru. I suggest the backers with the handle: www.eastwood.com/welders-helper-3x3-set-flat-curve-anglecop-plates.html - If you can't reach behind the metal to hold the handle, try this one with a magnet which works great: www.eastwood.com/magnetic-plug-welding-tool-horizontal.html

Well on the firewall it's brand new AMD metal and it's still happens. On the flooring It's original metal, i cut the rusted area out good enuf to good metal. I have and used both of those items. Also i use a air blow gun after each spot i cool the metal and it still happens. This always happened since day one, just thought it was me being a beginner welder at the time. One thing on the settings you used on the video. I set it for 19 gauge which is E 5. 22 gauge says B 4. On the video you have it set for B 4.5. Why is that if the Sheet metal kit is 19 gauge.

When you welded with no gap you had it flat against a huge heat sink- the table versus your open gap weld had no back up until you showed the copper plate. Not a good comparison for penetration and blow-through IMHO. else very good info.

What you are showing is "MIG Spot welding" a "Butt joint". What method is used for true "MIG Spot welding" "Lap joints" like are used on all newer cars (over lap of 1" to 1 1/2"). EG. Is the top metal layer required to be drilled first, or can the two sheet metal layers be welded without drilling the top metal layer? Access from one side only!
@rustyjeep2469
@rustyjeep2469 6 жыл бұрын
Paul Aitchison Typically on overlapped panels, holes are drilled through top piece and then welded up to join the two pieces together; these are called plug or rosette welds.

Great videos! Your customer service however is non existent, no one answers emails or phone call and the chat line doesnt work. So far, the only thing you did right was take my money, that was smooth as shit. I bought a MIG 180 off your website during a spend $100 and get free shipping sale. You charged me 41 dollar for shipping during checkout with no other option to pick. If I had read your facebook page reviews I would have never bought anything for this company.

See how much that weld pinched up because of the contraction and because you didn't have a gap. The reason you blew through your demonstration piece with the gap was because of poor machine setup.

Thanks for the videos. Just finished the mig welding sheet metal videos. Couple of suggestions; having a punch list is a start but you really need a story board. We don’t need the reporter on the scene footage. Well laid out shots that are assembled (edited) later make for a better educational experience. Also, these fuzzy, will the camera ever focus, shots get old really quick. Again, thanks for the effort but a game plan can improve the product. Oh, I did get my question answered in the last 30 seconds of the first video. Now I have another but not in a hurry to repeat the experience.
