When I first started playing I found ed, er/re, and ing, and I moved light-years ahead. I was already pretty decent at bingo finding for a beginner since I read a lot and worked with books, but just learning those sent me to the moon. My favorite bingo is from the Q with no U; MBAQANGAS, which I have played twice; once challenged, earning me a extra turn.

This is really helpful! I love the graphs you use, and that you actually put numbers and data to the words with each letter in them. The dictionary is SO big, it can be so intimidating to even start thinking about how many words are available to us, but you are so good at presenting this information in a digestible way.

Really appreciate the kind words, XT! That feeling of intimidation is normal - we've all felt it. (It's also my reaction to the thought of learning to play all of Banjo-Kazooie in just a couple of hours :) With time and practice, the patterns start to emerge.

Great video! It's fun to compare your instinctive percentages to the actual percentages. I was surprised at first to see M ever so slightly above C for words ending in a letter. But then it makes sense with -ISM, -IUM, -UM, -FORM, -NYM, -IM, -DOM (and -ROOM and -WORM). M is a fun ending letter!

Only just found your channel today, but it's for sure peeking an interest revisiting old board games in their new digital format (chess, scrabble). With not being a native English speaker and writer, some of your proposed finds didn't even register as being existing words, so being very familiar and good friends with the English dictionary will of course help in addition to these wonderful tips :) Greetings from the Netherlands! #subscribed

You don't mention the blank tiles. I'm of the opinion you shouldn't use a blank tile unless it's to lay down a bingo, or at least make a play that nets you at least 50 points. To be frank, I think the blank tiles make it too easy to get bingos. Get rid of the blank files and replace them with S tiles. (I suppose the reason there are only four S tiles in Scrabble is because they are too easy to use, but then the blank files are even easier to use. So add two more S tiles while eliminating the blank tiles, and I think you have a better game.)
@wanderer15
@wanderer15 Жыл бұрын
Agreed on the proper usage of blanks. I’ve also heard that perhaps the game would be improved if both players had one blank to use as they see fit, perhaps to swap in when they deem appropriate - of course that would dramatically change strategy, making opening dangerous areas of the board too risky until opponent uses up their blank, etc. Thanks for your thoughts!

It would be nice if you could provide links to documents or visuals containing the data you display about various letters and suffixes so that the viewer could download them. Also I was surprised that you didn't say anything at all in your last example of the rack that contained great letters but no bingos about looking for an eighth letter on the board, such as A, that you could play through to make an 8-letter bingo.
@wanderer15
@wanderer15 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good point - that's an omission on my part for sure, though it is an extra step above the very basic skill emphasized in the video of seeing a word on your rack. I can start to include the link to my statistics spreadsheet as well, though it might be confusing to follow until I improve the notation.

How do you tell if something is a word in many cases? For instance, the example in the video “wiriest” is a word, but it seems slightly awkward(forgive me for not being able to describe things well). Often I’ve found words which seem potentially plausible but am not sure if they are. Any tips on being more confident in the choice or do I just need to work on my vocabulary.
@wanderer15
@wanderer15 8 ай бұрын
This is not an easy question to answer - in general, most adjectives (like "wiry") have a good chance to inflect to comparative ("wirier") and superlative ("wiriest") forms, but there's always exceptions to that rule. One way to start could be to play some games on a platform that automatically validates your words, to allow you to do some experimentation. If your ultimate goal is to be able to transition to over-the-board play or to game modes that don't automatically validate words, it's still going to be a nice starting point.
