Brilliant interview! Good to know I have been on the right lines of my list building. I did once consider 40 odd Sisters, but put off by the fact that it must be horrible to manoeuvre around the board. Would be good to know how he or these lists with death stars do that. As for Arcane journal, would love to sea a unit similar to the Sentinels of Astaril make it in, which is basically a Seaguard unit on steroids, long range and armour piecing - juicy!

As Dawi says the key is Walk Between Worlds and the occasional Arcane Urgency. Combine that with most events giving you a hill in your deployment / most of your targets being Large Target you can run around in Open Order to be more efficient with space. But with Walk Between Worlds you can move, shoot, change formation. Very powerful.

@@CharlieH-N One other question and sorry, but I am a newb to table top gaming. Currently, playing high Elves. I didn't quite understand how pure of heart is good against screams, can you explain? Thanks again to you both - very enlightening video! Also, you made me think about the Null stone in a different light. Always thought it was an overpriced trash item, but the way you use it on a Phoenix makes it very viable and effective at shutting down L4 opponents - love it!

@@foreverthesceptic7942 Scream lists rely on various affects (such as those from the Necromancy lore of magic) that disable a unit's ability to use the General's Inspiring Presence rule (take their leadership). Pure of Heart functions exactly like Inspiring Presence however it is not switch off by these abilities, meaning the target of the scream can use the Ld9 of the Noble.

Reading the rules for scream, it says, "The target must make a Leadership test with a -2 modifier to its Leadership characteristic" So that would be L7 or am I totally misunderstanding it? I understand how it would not be modified by Spirit Leech which is amazing to know. However you still take a negative modifier from the scream itself. How does pure of heart counter this specific modifier? that is what I don't quite get.

I really loved this vid. Ive wished for years people would make videos more like this instead of just reading the army book and saying "this unit is good" Gotta say though, that unfortunately my playgroup consists of a tomb kings player and an artillery empire player. And this list did almost nothing to either. As the dice did not favor me (mostly walk between worlds) and my opponents demigriph knights and ushabti archers both made quick work of the deathstar.

I tried this list because the dragons didn't do too well. 9 wounds on a star dragon is more like 3 when your opponent runs 2 cannons and with fire them at nothing else but your 500+ point model. And the tomb kings player is a "2 40 man blocks of unkillable skeletons surrounded by 2 to 3 priests" kinda player.

I came in 4th at my US State GT with HE, running no dragons but two archmages and the Phoenix Guard block sort of like you mentioned. A stack of 18 Phoenix Guard, arrayed in 4x5 with a WardenOS Noble as BSB, holding the War Banner, while the Phoenix Guard ran the Battle Banner. I also plopped in my lvl4 High Magic sometimes. I lured in the enemy dragons by teasing them with my Shadow Warriors. They would charge the Shadow Warriors, which I placed directly in front of the Phoenix Guard, wipe them out, then continue the charge directly into the Phoenix. On my turn, I used my Skycutter Archmage to destroy the magic weapon of the lord, then the other archmage cast WbW on the Phoenix Guard. Crumbled a Bone Dragon in one turn. I lost only one game, to Wood Elves, because we were playing stupid rules where if you roll a 1 you have to select one unit to be reserved, or if you roll a 6 you have to select two. I rolled one 1 and three 6s, and my opponent rolled two 1s so the game was basically over at that point. I nearly got his dragon to flee off the board with my PG unit (sans my Noble since he was killed yay reinforcements) tactic, i was one model away from double outnumbering it when I won the combat. That may have changed the game, but alas that's in the past. Went 4-1.

Enjoyed the show, Charlie was a good guest and interesting to hear talk about his faction. He's obviously tried lots of things and it's good to hear from someone who wants to do something different to two dragons, phoenixes and twenty elves... Can't see that what he's landed on is any different to 90 Night Goblins though - if anything possibly worse as at least NG are a proper core unit that it makes sense to be big. I guess that if/when this sort of nonsense gets knocked on the head people just need to remember to make sure that whatever comp or rule they bring in to do that covers this as well. Not a problem for those of us who don't go/are miles off going to tournaments, you'd hardly expect anyone to do it outside of that and it sounds like Charlie himself wouldn't. I guess the tournament scene isn't going to see anything from High Elves that looks like an army until there are some rules changes or whatever which feels a bit sad.

I've won a small event with Empire, however it did have a Lvl4, 2 Helblaster, 2 Cannon, 44 Handguns.... But a big impact was Warrior Priest (for Multiwounds 2), Grand Master with Runefang in a block of 7 Inner Circles, anything they charged evaporated and no one expects a gunline to come at them.

I like the shadow stalker honour on a archmage with a magic carpet and a powerscroll. You can miasma something drop a crystal column and then run away. You also get evasive and fire and flee.

Yeah this. I'm surprised that I never hear anything about Nagarythe-Wizards. Could be fun, especially with Illusion as you said. This video inspired me to check if I had any interesting High Elf bits on sprue from back in the day... I found 10 Sisters/Shadow warriors New on Sprue, 2 White Lion Chariot NOS, 5 Dragon Princes NOS, 30 Spearmen NOS, 10 Pheonix Guard NOS and 3 Swordmasters NOS. I'm thinking of having spearmen units as chaff/bait that just flee when charged and get enemies out of position. Although maybe you could argue archers do that better and cheaper.

@@gingie2742 they are infantry, in my experience infantry doesn't work well at baiting anything. I tried to do that with corsairs and they always got dealt with by shooting or just left alone for a bit because everything else was moving faster than them on the board anyway.

Great chat, thanks for sharing with us. Charlie, what kind of formations are you running that 40 strong Sisters block in? Seems like in skirmish it would be challenging have every model able to shoot - would you often miss out models shooting in skirmish? Similarly, in open order ranked up, you'd be running them about 10 wide and volley firing? Great to think about how it works, thanks again for the insights.

Thanks mate! For the formation, it is entirely situational. If you're shooting large targets either work. And with ignore cover, in skirmish each model only needs to see a millimetre of a target unit to hit it. If you have the horn up, you nearly always want to be in Open Order as wide as you can - for receiving a charge ideally to get more horn value. Then you just have a lot of factors to consider, do I need skirmish to give enemies -1 to hit? Do I need to move backwards? Do I have walk between worlds up so I can reform-shoot-move or move-reform-shoot. Am I on a hill so Open Order is fine? There's really no one answer. I'd say if you want a rule of thumb it would be "be in open order unless there's a reason not to" - and there are many reasons not to!

Enjoyed the conversation and I know there is a reason we limited skirmisher to max 10 unit strength for Infantry, 12 for caralry and 15 for Mounstrous Infantry/Cavalry. It is just rediculous in a rank and flank game to make skirmishers such a powerful tool, not really fun for us, they should be relegated to the chaff role and that is it. Thankfully you don't need to follow the rules as written in your own house. Any rules that disentevice deathstarts is also good becasue they are not a tactical tool, just a way to throw lots of dice and in my opinion make the game pointless to play, luckily there are tools to deal with most deathstars although skirmishing deathstars are problematic in my opinion.

​@@Dawiafterdark Yes... I undestand that, we house ruled that as well, all regen and ward saves get -1 if you mount a character on a Monstrous Creature or Behemoth Monster. That makes the monster more in line with their points versus say a naked dragon or other monster. If the monster have 5+ Regen and the charachter also has it they can keep it though. But if you go to tounrnaments I understand that is not possible.

The problem with High Elves in TOW seems to be that choice is either OP (or perceived OP, or unfun), or alternatives that are seriously under par. I do understand the rule in general, and the motivatuons behind it, but it does hit hard on HE because their alternatives are pretty bad. 'The' other option are dragon riders, which are considered unfun as well, as well as Archmage Spam, which is frowned upon in general. I'm not a competitive player, I would never go for 40 Sisters and I never played in tounaments. But the list is quite bad as it is, and removing the few effective options bei either ruling ('ridiculous') or morals ('unfun', 'OP''), makes it even worse. Excellent interview! Only thing to keep in mind that the Horn of Isha is a once per army once per game item and only has a success rate of like 60% (does it benefit from a nearby LD9/10 Pure of Heart? I would say no). Sisters are still awesome of course.

Burlock in the drakes near enough to grudge thrower to reroll. Can Vanguard to get into range sooner. Rangers with the BSB in 2 ranks to force units to engage with shooting, get combat res on stand and shoot then hopefully win out a challenge with bsb.

So gyros work really well into them because of the impact hits and also the dive bomb , also multi charging as quickly as possible , yeetinh a unit into them with the reroll saves rune active normally works too :) but with these massive blocks coming it could be the time of the flame cannons soon hah

@ it’s the rule for too many characters in the front rank it specifically says that if your not in the front rank you go to the back rank and confer to special rules or ld bonuses , but that’s only in combat you can still use it against shooting if the tunesmiths hiding

If you're shooting Large Targets, no problem. If you're not, due to Ignore Cover, each model only needs to see a millimetre of their target. And with this list you are using very little of the table space so you have a lot of room. However they are more convenient in Open Order so you do use that if you can (i.e. for stand and shoot and receive charge with horn up, or with hills, or with Large Targets)

Does the null stone effect the bearer? If so, giving it an archmage should be suboptimal? (Your archmage and the opponent lvl 4 both get the -1)

Great interview thanks very much! as worded, the power scroll adds a dice to the casting roll and the HE caster can re-roll the casting roll. So you could re-roll the extra. As written. I ought to declare an interest as a HE player!

I didn’t think it needed to be as it is used for ld tests and the spells have the wording it stops inspiring presence , unless we get an faq saying otherwise we’re good to go

It doesn't need a FAQ - the spells in Necromancy specifically block Inspiring Presence, a completely separate (albeit identical) rule to Pure of Heart.

@@Vendarynn This is the part that isn't as cut and dry and folks argue for either interpretation. Locally in our meta, it's ruled that modifiers like Terror/Necromancy will affect the leadership passed on from Pure of Heart. There isn't anything concrete that I can see that your interpretation is the correct one, or vice versa. That's the thing that a lot of folks think needs an FAQ. If you can cite rules I would love to hear your evidence for supporting that interpretation as I would love to be able to back that at events.

I think Handmaiden of the Everqueen cannot be General over a Noble because Nobles have better LD and the guy with the highest LD is always the general.

I dont know if its true but the list wont contain three normal units just 2 Dragonprinces and Sister. The rulebook say that an army must have three units which are not charaktermodels or monsters at last. So the list might be illegal???

Power scrolls adds a d6 to the casting roll. The HE ability rerolls the casting roll. Soyou only reroll the 2d6 then ADD the power scroll.

Does cloak of beards even work it only gives the bearer terror. For a unit to get terror the entire unit must have terror not just the bearer. There’s a reason why the wood elf one says it also gives the entire unit terror

It works for applying Terror to enemies but it does not make the unit immune to Terror (which is how the wood elf one is better).

It does kind of show up that units ought to have been given maximum sizes as well as minimums and that a blanket maximum size of 50 (or whatever) won't solve the 'problem'. I guess maybe different maximum sizes for units with horde and without and also for skirmishers though I expect there are probably units that thematically should be able to be big that could get unfairly treated in that (not sure what they are mind, just think they're probably out there!).

I mean, Sisters in core are only unlocked in games where a Handmaiden of the Evergreen is the general (!) of the army. That's a pretty solid lore-justification in my book. Not that many Ulthuan Militia running around at the Everqueen's court.

@@iJasko warhammer originally was supposed to represent the massive armies found in the likes of LoTR. Each model representing a hundred or a thousand actual soldiers found in a 'real' battle. Therefore all armies should be mostly made up of 'trash' units, spearmen, archers, infantry, that kind of thing. The special stuff was always meant to be rare, and I mean RARE. Obviously this isn't where the game stands now. It's HeroHammer now. Infantry rank and file is now a thing of the past pretty much, everyone has massive amounts of heroes and special units and battles aren't won on the table, but during the army building online.

The severe problem with handmaiden shooting deathstar is the math is good, but it means that 25% of your games you fail the horn (if they dont have other ways to reduce leadership, such as lady elise, or leadership debuff spells)

The horn is "attempt to use" i.e. if you fail the test, you do not use it, you can try again. What does happen is you fail to land it on the optimal turns, so you always need a backup plan, you can't really go all in. Also helpful is that it is Command Phase, i.e. it's not a surprise if you fail it and you can react and set up to try again.
