I have had a watch given to me that I could never figure out how to wind. I knew it should have been a simple thing. I was able to wind it because of this video. I think I was so scared to break it. This helped! Thank you!!

Just regarding the last part where you explain how you can receive an automatic in the post which is running : I saw a negative Amazon review of an automatic watch where the customer thought it must have been pre-owned because it was running when he unboxed it. I laughed. I have several automatics where barely picking them up kicks them into life.

Ha! That's both incredible and completely not surprising at the same time. I have a story that is somewhat similar that was the sole reason I made this video. I have a great piece in stock to do.a follow up video - a near NOS 2016 Seiko Presage Limited Edition 1956. This particular watch has a large and easily readable power reserve indicator. It's the perfect watch that I can use to show just how little rotor action it takes to make a healthy movement run. I'll make a video explaining the indicator system. I'll have it at dead "0", barely shake it, throw it on a timegrapher, and show that the indicator is at zero. From there, I'll show what vigorous shaking does for the power indicator..(hint - it's not much), and from there, give it a 10% wind, back to the timegrapher to show the spec difference, then full wind, back to the timegrapher. Thank YOU for an excellent idea for a follow up!!

My automatic watch does not make that winding sound when I turn the crown clockwise in the home position. Does that mean it’s not winding? Should I still wind it then?

@@secondhandhorology It’s a Nine West brand floral dial women’s watch. Also, what I thought was weird is when I turn the crown clockwise, the minute hand moves counterclockwise. Which is the opposite for all other watches I’ve owned before... Does this mean now that I would have to turn the crown counterclockwise to wind it? Please help. Thank you!

Awesome video mate. Please tell me how many years later we need to service a hand wing watch and a automatic watch? Please tell me. Is HMT watches r good mate?
@secondhandhorology
@secondhandhorology 2 жыл бұрын
A service is recommended every 5-7 years on most watches. Many can go longer, however. I personally enjoy HMT watches, as the movement are based on a very simple, very durable Seiko design, and the watches themselves were very attractive. An interesting note is that all HMTs were made entirely in house, and they outsourced nothing.

Did you start to wind when the crown was completely pushed to the left, or pulled midway or it pulled all the way out.

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks..

Good afternoon, I'm off topic but I need help. My bride gave me a watch from the 70s “Tian Harlan corhmachron ” ,the head only rotates counterclockwise, is this normal? Or should I apply force and rotate clockwise? I'm afraid I'll spoil it because it's a wedding gift, it means a lot to me.

@secondhandhorology
@secondhandhorology 2 жыл бұрын
It needs serviced, most likely. All mechanical watches need service, which in most cases is comprised of a basic disassembly, cleaning, and lubricating. The oil in the watches tends to lose its viscosity over time. I'd expect service to cost in the neighborhood of $500 at most watch shops for what you are describing. Maybe less if you get an old school, honest watchmaker who doesn't price gouge based upon brand names.

If you pull the stem out, you'll be setting the date or the time, depending on whether it has a calendar or not, but either way, you will be in a setting position, not a winding one

I have a Waltham from the 70’s that’s mint no’s and it use to run but I believe (it’s been awhile) it looks new and has the original sticker on it I’ve wound it and the sun second dial turns but the minute and hour hands don’t? It’s such a beautiful watch but I don’t know why this is happening.

Most likely it's a probably with either the cannon pinion or it simply doesn't have a dial washer on it. It's most likely an easy fix.

In that case, you need to have someone examine it. May need a new winding wheel, may be a bad click spring, or a winding arbor

Hey! I just bought a vintage Certina Sportsman from the 70s. Additionally to the ticking sound, the watch makes a pretty high methalic sound - like the rotor is hitting something. Do anyone know why/what this is? Very annoying … :/
@secondhandhorology
@secondhandhorology Жыл бұрын
Most likely it is the rotor tapping the inside caseback, or if it is jeweled, the jewel could have a crack and be noisy.

Worst thing you can do is wind a watch until it stops winding, a good 😂way to break the spring. 10-15 turns is enough. Also keep your greasy fingers out of the movement.
@secondhandhorology
@secondhandhorology Жыл бұрын
That's actually a fallacy. If you CONTINUE to force it, then yes, you will break a spring or an arbor, or cause the spring to slip. If your watch is healthy, it will not break. Especially with modern main springs. If your main breaks from simply winding it, it needed to be replaced.
