Good stuff! I think the second method would still be code compliant if the second switch was in a multiple gang box where there is another switch on a separate circuit that has its own natural?

I'm not one hundred percent sure at the moment but it sounds like it should be code compliant if there is a neutral in the same box. I just try to avoid wiring it like that in the first place. But it's good to know how to wire switches in many different ways because in renovation houses there's a good chance you'll encounter old ways of doing things, So it's nice to understand what you're looking at.
