Man, thank you!. I unhooked this switch box over a month ago. When I went to reinstall it I had a 14/2 and a 14/3 cable that I just couldn’t figure out how to put back. I kept popping the breaker cause I was trying to make both white go to a screw, both blacks to a screw, and both grounds to a ground screw. The red I capped. Thank you so much for setting me straight!

Your video is very informative. I am a first year electrical apprentice. I haven't started school yet, but school doesn't start for a couple of months anyway. Finding work for electrical apprentice first year is tough, especially for apprenticeship in Idaho.

why wasn't there a grounding pigtail and ground added to the switch.
@matthewcole21674 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing because one ground is going all the way to the breaker box. So nutting it with the other going to the light should be ok. I’m not 100 percent sure though.

Nice video. Can you tell me what to do if you are wiring 3 switches instead of one (3 switch box) and power coming in from elsewhere like your video shows? Do you connect 1st switch as described in video then use black jumper wire from switch 1 to switch 2 and 3 respectively? All commons and grounds together? Hope the question is clear. Thanks
@icreatablestv10 жыл бұрын
Andrew Meece Yes the power is jumpered across the three switches so it is not turned off by any one switch. The grounds and the commons are wired together.

Very informative! I would like to know how would you go about replacing an older light switch. It has a black and a white no ground. And the switch itself has a plate where all the wires connect to. No pigtails.
@icreatablestv4 жыл бұрын
The hot wire goes through the switch. The other wires are connected to each other. if there is no ground then you do nothing with the ground.
@jacoblambert41499 жыл бұрын
I never used a wire nut for my light switchs, There always another screw on the side for the white wire.. right above the ground wire. or we have to put saftey light switchs where we dont twist at all. Same for outlets.

Nice, qq. Do we need single dedicate wire from switch to Light Bulb, it allow multiple joint in wire - I come with issue where my wire from light bulb to switch is little short- Can I make joint to add extra wire or do I need run another dedicated wire without joint

why didn't you pigtail the ground wires and connect it to the ground screw on the light switch
@vladimirpolak52038 жыл бұрын
you don't have to ground the light switch directly, you ground the box, there is metal strip that you ground to that, then connects to the to the threads which you screw the lightswitch to the box.

Is the wiring the same if my power source to my light switch is a 3 prong extension cord? This is for a lighted mirror that will stay plugged in but will turn on/off with a switch. Thanks in advance.
@icreatablestv6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the power does not care what the wire it is riding in looks like as long as it is rated to hold it. :)

And what if power is coming from the light ?

@icreatablestv9 жыл бұрын
That is a mistake. The ground wires must have a pig tail from them to the ground screw/terminal on the switch.
@thegreek329 жыл бұрын
iCreatables Hey (new to electrical) if you pig tail the ground wires than wire nut them how would you connect them to the switch after? if there wire nutted, because i believe there's a green screw to put the ground wire under.
@arsnik77699 жыл бұрын
Peter Anonamoose You have to add a third length of ground wire into the wire nut(pigtail), then to the ground screw.

I believe that was clear right up to the point where he sheathed the wires. After that it got a bit muddy. Come on!! This was a well made video so why didnt you slow down when it came to , oh, I dont know, the dangerous parts like which are the hot wires and explaining the logic of which was the power and which were the wires going to the receptacles. Grrrr. Thumbs down for clarity.
