Any benefit of putting sense wire at the battery instead of at the back of the alternator?

My 1966 289 alternator is not charging my battery. Mustang. Tested alt, regulator and solenoid and all are good. Just a wiring error I think. A to battery, F to field, S to stater and I to ignition. Still no luck. 1st generation 3 wire alt. Please advise.
