Thank you so much for doing this series of videos. Really helpful to a young professional still learning!

That is the best explanation I've ever come across.

568A is the primary wiring config for EIA/TIA standard (1991). The reason 568B is included within standard is for the legacy wiring/AT&T cabling (already installed) and support for AT&T/Lucent PBX switches in commercial buildings since 1980s. -- For Residential, I advise homeowners to use 568A wiring (unless specific reason for 568B) within their walls (jacks & patch panels). For Commercial Bldg., totally depends on existing infrastructure (or training of staffs). MARK at Main DeMarcation/Patch Panel which standard is in usage.

Ummm, think you might have things backward. I don't know anything about the history or whatever but I've been doing this for 20 years and I've never once seen a building using the "A" standard. Everyone uses "B".

Great demonstration. I got confused at about 3:37. You punched down, but then when you removed the wiring, I couldn't detect any slicing in the shielding. Perhaps it was not visible. It seems to imply that you don't have to strip the shielding at all. Is that true? Thanks so much for the explanation, though.

you can essentially make up your own pin out patch but you have to make sure you use the same pin out on everything (meaning both ends) and using a patch panel using a homemade pin out just is not labeled, so it is best to use the 568 variations

Standards, especially Commercial support the "Truck Theory" or whatever it's called, in which one gets hit by a Truck/Bus and someone else has to come in and figure out what has been done. Not disagreeing, just presenting "Best Practice" implementations.

Hi, i'm a complete novice with these things so was wondering if you could help me? Could i send an Ethernet cable from my router downstairs to my loft and wire it to one of these through the wall and be able to plug in as if i was plugging directly into the router? Thanks.

Great video, if i may ask, what about wall outlets does it matter if you are using cat5e ports vs cat6 wall ports? i am currently setting up an office, and i have read that all your termination points / cables / ports / jacks / patch panels / switch must be rated at cat 6 to get the cat 6 specifications or else if only one of it is cat5e, then the whole system runs at cat 5e.... can you share your expertise on these? thanks

last 10 seconds, would have been nice to see you actually punch down a few wires or complete.

My wires are 8 strand but not twisted, will it still work?
@mickwhelan10226 жыл бұрын
Good video, but don't untwist the wires before placing on the jack unless you can absolutely can't help it. Keeping the twist intact for as long as possible is crucial. Especially as you move up to Cat 6 & Cat 6A. Most jacks even have a little point to help you separate the wire pairs as you push the wire down into the jack so that you don't have to untwist the wires at all.

One interesting and baffling thing that I learned today while doing some wiring: The color code on the jack, and the color code on the plug (as seen on the box of plugs) do not correspond! I used "B" for both, but it will only work for jack to jack or plug to plug. The standards from plug to jack are apparently different. For instance Solid Brown to Orange stripe. I eventually figured it all out with my mutlimeter. There must be a reason..

Yeah I try to "punch down" the wires and they just don't go. A little bit more advice on that would be helpful.

i put in a rj45 system today and went with the b on both with a wall jacks so when i put the modem cable in to the wall jack nothing happens on the other side when i hook up a laptop no cable internet i think im doing something wrong
@lenyfreeman38077 жыл бұрын
The DSL modem typically uses a cross over patch cable. If you used a straight thru, it usually won't work. Keeping your run ends consistent A-A or B-B should be just fine.

can you have an RJ45 on one end and a Keystone Jack on the other?
@joluboga6 жыл бұрын
Yes, like an extender
@mickwhelan10226 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Just make sure you stick to the same spec (568A or 568B) on both ends. That being said, most structured wiring goes from a keystone jack in the wall to a patch panel in your wiring closet. Some patch panels are made out of lots of keystone jacks also for ultimate flexibility. I've seen cheap installs that go from RJ45 to RJ45 thus sparing the expense of the keystone jack and the patch panel. That's honestly how I did my house, but I would never do my business like that.
