I made my first ethernet cable a long time ago, using the old non-pass through connectors. These are so much easier and better, have almost 100% success rate.

Same. I have bag of 50 non-pass-through ends. For either type - remove outer jacket exposing 1 1/2 inches / 4cm - much easier to untwist and sort.

What if you have copper and fiber optic in the strand? Is it the same wiring pattern or something different?

Once, I had a cable with a plug where the metal cores of the wires were exposed at the tip. The cable had PoE injected into it, and when the exposed metal parts came into contact with the metal part of the rack, sparks burst out of the contact area. After that I never used these types of plugs again.
