When connecting the wires to the brass colored screws on the switch, it sounds logical the way you described it, power comes in to the bottom screw and goes to the light on the top screw. The reality is that it makes no difference, the switch will make or break the connection, regardless.

Your right doesnt matter where the wire goes the switch will still work. It your preference.

Take your power coming to your switch is the black wire hook on bottom screw of switch, than than the wire coming from light take that black wire hook on top screw of switch, than take the 2 white wires twist them together add wire nut than push back in box hook up your copper wire this is your ground on green screw on switch than on your light black wire to gold screw and white wire to silver screw ground copper wires to box or if your light has wires it would be black to black white to white or if you are hooking up a fan with a light you'll have a blue wire that will hook on your black wire to power your light than hook up your grounds to box now than power coming into your switch from the bottom screw is the power now when you throw your switch up than the switch sends power up to the light, now make sure you have your switch right

Would it work on a light fixture that does not have brass and silver screws? What if the light fixture has black, white, and ground wires only (with no screws)

Yes it would work. Black wire ( gold screw ) White wire ( silver screw )

Depends on if you want the switch to work the outlet or not. If not you just run two power wires, one to the switch and one to the outlet or you can snag power from the switch too by just adding a jumper pigtail wire. (A extra wire connected to the power wire ) then to outlet

The neutral wire brings power to the switch then the switch controls the light. Look at other diagrams and other videos it will show you the same thing. It's confusing but it will work.
