This is how we learned to fix small cracks in woodworking class, except we use super fine saw dust mixed with the wood glue it looks alot better that way

@Cristian usually it the sawdust straight from the plank of wood

And also preferably same colour saw dust as the wood that is to be fixed.

The issue is that wood filler doesn’t change color with the wood over time, this does. They use this method a lot in flooring installation to fill in from top nailing

Y'know, I recall watching a guitar repairing channel, twoodford, do this kinda trick, to repair small cracks in the fretboard or fill fret holes and whatnot. He always stays humble, admitting his fixes are not comparable to an unbroken thing. They would look LEAGUES above this at worst.

If you use fine wood dust it'll turn out beautiful. For strength one can use epoxy instead of wood glue too.
Missingthe80's9 күн бұрын
You can use sawdust to better effect. Either use an abrasive tool and sacrificial piece of wood and if you want to get extra fancy use a rock tumbler as a ball mill, fill with ball bearings and saw dust from a rasp, it's much much faster to get course saw dust then reduce it to powder in the mill. Makes a great filler that can be color matched with some effort with a heated piece of wire.
ashokАй бұрын
Don't take the knot powder as its darker. Use the brightest part of the wood powder and then fill it.
Michael LeviАй бұрын
Congratulations, you have discovered my truck to patch small portions of particle board. Unfortunately it does not work well on real woods. Epoxy would have been much better, fill it up about 1/16 below the surface of the wood and it leaves it nice and shiny while still displaying the beauty in rustic wood. Fill it above the wood a bit and sand flush for tabletop stuff.
bovinicusdivinicusАй бұрын
I've actually done this. It works if you need a surface for painting, otherwise just replace the piece with another ounce, that's the best you can do.
Chris BАй бұрын
Great prep to remove the sap and debris. Then you had to mess it up, natural imperfect wood filled with clear resin would look 1000 times better.
MickoАй бұрын
What he did is old school, Resin isn't.
Ronnie ColemanАй бұрын
Never know, Maybe that resin wasn’t easily accessible, or they couldn’t afford a wood filler. People improvise for quick fixes, & this looks like one to me. You never know. Either way, it looks perfectly fine. Almost better than brand new. May not set too long, but it still got a view from someone lol

Contrary to what many others are saying this is a good tip to the home DIY. Filling the gap with fine wood dust/glue mix creates a much more natural look over any other chemical filler. I saw where one of the comments was "way to replace your knot with anther knot ..." yep... the whole left but the wood separating it is being replace by something that looks close to what should be there. Why is this a bad thing?

@Redneck Zombie that's one option. For board stock I intend on painting I find that Bondo is a quick and effective solution. For board stock that will get a clear stain finish I mix black paint with Bondo and it turns out nice.
Ron HaringАй бұрын
Or after a rain storm!!!
Redneck ZombieАй бұрын
@Dalton Hoffman this is the main issue with using glue vs just wood filler. Honestly both options suck. Just cut that shit out and use the good wood around it. Or as I’ve said in other comments just get better wood to start with.
Dalton HoffmanАй бұрын
Agreed. This will shrink. It also will not take any finish not even primer will bond to it

Mixing in the dark brown dust from the knot was a mistake, at least use dust the same colour as the wood. It will still look bad, but won't draw the eye as much.
