I always felt a little intrigued how these telephone engineers found what cable to search for when sitting working at the pavement side cable cabinet. Now I know.. Very fascinating subject. Thank you.

Vince, this is excellent. Thanks for posting it. 30+ years ago, I used to know this material (forgotten it now) -- and yesterday I found it necessary to do some wiring at home. Still got all the tools, but I'd forgotten all the important stuff! Instead of taking Freeman's "Reference Manual for Telecommunications" off the shelf -- it's 1,504 pages thick! -- I've decided instead to watch your videos. They're a great refresher course for an old fart like me. Good, hi-quality content in your videos -- you should be proud of them. Nicely done.

CW cable types and Boxcon. Never heard those terms before. I think it is so interesting to hear telecom Lingo from other countries. At least we call the grey wire "slate" on both sides of the pond. Thanks for sharing Vince. 😄

Wish all engineers was like you, iev recently had my internet cut off and still is. A BT engineer has connected my neighbour to the internet (I live in flats) and now my internet has gone I still have a tone dial. So I went into the communal cupboard and found new wiring that’s connected to my line. So I know whatever BT engineer came to do works has cut me off. Iev has no internet for a week now and still waiting for an engineer to fix this problem they created. If I had more knowledge I would rewire it myself.

Nice video, and well explained. Exactly how things are done here in New Zealand too, but I expect that is because NZ uses the BT standard. ;) Purple pairs follow the yellow ones, but as you were only talking 20-pair in your video..... We also call the grey pair "Slate" :) A common mistake when people are training up on this stuff, is crossed-paired mistakes, where you have the A-leg(or "1") of one pair from one group, paired up with the B-leg(or "2") from another pair, or another pair in a different group, and then they can't work out why the line does not go at the other end! :p VERY easy to do, if you don't correctly and carefully separate the pairs as one of the very first steps - especially with the external grease-filled cables which don't tend to have much of a twist in the pairs, and I have had a couple of apprentices make that mistake! :p

What an excellent video. I am planning to install a new master socket with new cable from just after the point where the drop wire reaches the external wall of my house. I carefully removed a section of outer cable to reveal the internal colours. The cable is about 30 years old and contained 7 inner strands. There were 3 red, running together, plus black, green, white and orange. I suspect that the red strands are for physical strength and that the other wires carry info. Do you think I would be correct in assuming one pair is white and orange, while the other is black and green? How could I check and which colour would be the tip? Many thanks Mike Offiler

quick question, when fitting a 20 pair cw1308 to a cat5e patch panel, what pins on the patch panel end do i use , is it 3 and 6?
@Mymatevince9 жыл бұрын
adee737 Hi, on cat5e normally the voice uses the middle 2 pins on the RJ45 so pins 4 and 5 which should be colour coded as the blue wire and white/blue wire (the blue pair). Many thanks Vince

hi im looking how to have an exstension in my bedroom i have the wire with the 4 colour wire and that is red, black, green and yellow can u help? x

+Kelly Harris Hi, that sounds like the flat flexible telephone cable which doesn't have twisted pairs so really it shouldn't matter what colour you use as long as you use the same on both ends so if you put yellow to terminal 2 on the existing working socket and then yellow to 2 on the new extension socket and choose maybe red to 5 and green to 3. It will work for voice but will be pretty bad for broadband so it would be better to get some CW1308 cable which is the same stuff BT uses and has twisted pairs like the colour code in this video.Many thanks Vince

Excellent and informative, however....a mistake @ 4:43 "If it was pair 10, it would be red-blue" It would be red-slate I think you mean! red-blue is pair 6
@Mymatevince9 жыл бұрын
***** Hi, well spotted, quite right it should have been red/slate. Thanks for posting the correction message.All the best Vince.

My Mate VINCE 6:12 "if it was pair 33, it would be in the green bundle". Wouldn't pair 33 be in the brown bundle? (pair 31 - 40)

Kacey Anders in the US its 25 pair. Violet is the 5th Ring color. 33 in tbe US is Orange White Red Green
@northvilletunnels6 жыл бұрын
If you find thecrings of orange and green it is a sign an electrician wired it up. Splitting the pair will cause cross talk.

Bell operators give better service,(blue,orange,green,brown,slate) When(why) run backwards you vomit(white,red,black yellow,violet)

It is called slate because Alexander Bells nemisis was a man named Gray.

ffs its easy, Be On Gaurd By Seven = Blue Orange Green Brown Slate, first 5 with white wire second lot with red wires= a 10 pair, and that is just repeated lol
