I found it easier to do “40% of 13” instead. Which is 10% of 13 (1.3) times four = 5.2. You mentioned this briefly with 32% of 75, but I think it deserves a mention. Always try to find the easier percent - generally the one that’s divisible by numbers like 5/10/25/etc :)
@j.taylor3670

I also noticed that when you do a percentage of a two digit number ending in 0 like the first two examples, it's the tens place times the percentage number then move the decimal point one space left in the answer: 13 x 4 = 52, make it 5.2.
@LoudMinded
@LoudMinded 3 жыл бұрын
It's the similar for those that don't end in 0 as well, 32 times 75 = 2400, 2400/100 is 24

I'm autistic diagnosed late in life. I loved sciences but my poor math skills kept me from pursuing them. Had there been the push as there is now in the US to get girls into the sciences and had they known about autism they would have gotten me a tutor to make up my math deficits and I would have been a researcher of some kind but alas, no. Had math been taught the way you do I wouldn't even have needed a tutor. Thank you for sharing your great work.

This type of trick is also there for division of imperfect numbers I will show Lets say 15 ÷ 4 Now make different parts of number 4 as follows: 1 part of 4 = 4 2 parts of 4 = 8 3 parts of 4 = 12 Now the closest 1 we have is 3 parts = 12 To get to 15 we need 3 more than 12 which means that we do not need a full part of 4 So we will take 3 parts out of the number 4 which means we need 3/4 more than 12 So we got 3 parts of 4 = 12 and 3/4 parts of 4 So ( 3 + 3/4 ) × 4 = 15 Easy ☺

It's also useful to understand that A% of B is exactly the same as B% of A. This sometimes allows for quick mental calculations. Thus, 17% of 30 is the same as 30% of 17, or .3 thimes 17 = 5.1

If you are good with multiplication then you just multiple and count the decimal points using the trailing zeroes.
@AndreSomers
@AndreSomers 3 жыл бұрын
Way too complex. Percentages are just multiplications with a hidden divide-by-100 tagged on (which equals “times 0.01” ofc). So, to get 13% of 40 you do this: 13 x 40 x 1/100 => 13 x 4 x 1/10 => 52 / 10 = 5.2

I forced myself to learn a different way (MOSTLY self taught) which is not unlike your method, I really do like this, it is smooth. Basically it was to flop the numbers around until you had something to work with that was closer to 10. Such as 31% of 70, you could easily flop it around to 70% of thirty one. Sometimes I did the tenth like you. If I would have seen this video when I was 6 yo, it would have saved me many an angry night.

This is how I’d do it for a more difficult problem (such as 22% of 52) but for a problem like this (13% of 40) I’d switch the percentage number (A% of B=B% of A, or for this problem, 13% of 40=40% of 13) then do this method (1.3x4=5.2)
