There was a comment left saying that the original wrap on the knife looked better and the new wrap looks like crap. I agree that the original wrap looked better but the new wrap is way stronger and more functional. New wrap is the way to go. If you want to improve the look, you could always do a cobra weave over top of this wrap which will beef up the handle a little and give it a nicer look.

Looks to me like the wrap on the handle was probably for survival purposes. Easy to take off yes. Most likely because it's made to be removable so you can use the wrap for other purposes.

Wanna snug it some more? Place the finished wrap in boiling water (hard boil) for one minute and allow to cool. You'll get somewhere in the neighborhood of 5% shrinkage of the cord doing that and it will pull everything as tight as you could want it.

I did this but with a sword. The factory wrap came off within a day and I was clueless on how to fix it. It had excess with a big knot hanging from the bottom through a hole in the tang, I hated it. I was a little cautious about cutting pieces off but did it anyway. It was a little difficult because the sword had 2 thin pieces of wood wrapped in some kind of tape most likely to absorb shock and it was loose the whole time making the wrap, but I managed. This one is more solid thank you.
@FastActionBlades
@FastActionBlades 8 жыл бұрын
+Aero4576 NP bro. Glad it helped. I hate most factory wraps. There's a few good ones but they are more for decoration it seems. They don't stand up to actual use. I'm also not a fan of wood underneath the wrap, I figure it's more to beef up the handle. I would rather do a second wrap over top to beef it up if need be. Also the cobra weave will make it a little larger as well. Have a great day man.

The one advantage that I have found using the original style of wrapping is that when replaced with a higher-quality of wrapping (550 cord in this case) the switchback raised sections of the wrap are able to be slightly compressed in your hand, almost giving it a cushioned feel. (I'm doing a really bad job of explaining this...) While not needed for a throwing knife, the slight cushion of the wrap on a standard utility knife has helped me when using it for long periods of time.
@FastActionBlades
@FastActionBlades 8 жыл бұрын
+minecraftengineer Hmmmm, not sure I completely understand. I definitely do not need a wrap for a throwing knife, it was mainly a suggestion for throwing so people would understand or realize how much better the new wrap is. Even if you were using the original wrap for any other tasks, I'm sure it would come loose and you would not be able to use the knife as effectively as you would with the new wrap. I hope that makes sense. I'm pretty damn tired right now. Haha. Thanks for the awesome comment, and sorry for the late reply. Just got back from vacation. Hope you have a great day.

Got a throwing axe when I was younger in didnt understand there was different product quality. First time the handle hit the target the paracrap broke and the wood that was under it to beef up the handle fell off. I still have it I think im going to rewrap it with 550 and hope for a better result. I need a simple wrap like this because I have never done it before.

I used this style wrap on a SCAXE10 with rubber grip I bought for my son. I did it with high-vis orange paracord in case it gets dropped in the brush or something. I wrapped it tight from the end of handle with the loop up toward the head. What I did not do was pull it so far into the wrapped coils,that way if he needs some of the roughly 12' of cord he can get at the loop to loosen it,take what he wants,then pass the end back through the loop and pull tight again to still retain what remains for visibility and grip,or,just take it all. After seeing this and other videos where it is pulled so deep into the coils I will warn him to watch it for loosening. I don't think it will because of the rubber underneath it but better to warn him anyway... The high-vis orange looks pretty good on the little black hatchet. I think it was about 12' to go a bit past the rubber and leave some steel handle to take hits if he misses the mark which could help preserve the cord.

@FastActionBlades 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome. I agree with the not taking it so far down for easier access if the cord is needed. I will keep that in mind if I do one for a bush knife. I wanted this to be secure as I was only going to use it for throwing. Thanks for watching and the excellent comment.

How do you undo the wrap when you need the paracord?
@FastActionBlades
@FastActionBlades 9 жыл бұрын
jwinkelm88 You can grap the strand that was tucked at the bottom of the wrap and pull it down which undoes the loop underneath the wrap and the whole thing just unravels. It may be a little tricky to get a good grip on the strand. Needle nose pliers would be handy for sure.
@Iboo30
@Iboo30 7 жыл бұрын
Didn´t you loosen the paracord a bit by lifting it up with the screwdriver to get the loop through? At least it appears so in the video ...

any way to use this wrap and still get a strong loop on the end of a carabiner ?
@FastActionBlades
@FastActionBlades 9 жыл бұрын
Matt Tee hmmm, it could be possible. Let me think.
@Krakatov
@Krakatov 9 жыл бұрын
FastActionBlades You could of course drill a hole in the handle and tie a loop to that (And depending on where you drill the hole, you could wrap over it so you wouldn't even see it) or you make a loop at the end of the handle for the carabiner, and run both ends up towards the blade. Leave an inch or so past where you are going to stop wrapping. Then tape those so they don't move and wrap it like normal. Then take those loose ends and go over the first wrap (towards the blade) and then push the rest of it under the wraps until it's all underneath. You could also tie little knots in the ends so it's less likely to pull through. Also I would do that on the opposite side that you do the loop for the main wrap, that way one side isn't too bulky. Of course this wouldn't be as secure as simply tieing a loop to a drilled hole, but it should hold a few dozen pounds. Sorry for the long response, hope that helps.

Thanks again, used my excess from last time for my M48 Hawk hatchet that just had a shitty plastic grip. Much better than before, now I can use more power without hurting my hand on the fuckin thing. Little bit hard though, the grip was a bunch of grooves in the plastic. It kept un-evening my wraps. The handles of most of my weapons have problems. I buy them with main focus on steel, weight and leverage, not comfort. Guess I should go that extra mile from now on.

Factory wraps are absolute crap. I'm amazed that they even think about selling us that. Not to mention the horrible quality of paracord. While I'm sure this is a sturdy wrap, any chance you can give us a Do-Over for the entire project so we can see ALL the little nuances involved? There were a couple of spots that I felt would end up being one of those "If it Can go wrong, it WILL go wrong" because some important step was missed being filmed. Maybe it's just me, but Pretty Please?? LOL I'm right now in the process of looking for a wrap procedure that is simple, with little to no fancy and incorporates the K.I.S.S. Methodology. TIA, I hope. Overnout
