I love your videos. In my 7th grade intensive reading class I teach a version of this/ R.A.C.E. So topic sentence, evidence (citation), elaboration, evidence (citation), elaboration. It’s difficult to teach good writing when the state wants us to follow a formula. I’m so sick of reading “the text states.” Thank you for the analysis diagram too!

Hello there, I trust all is well. I have been struggling with my literature essay for sometime now, this shift occurs soon after the first semester when my previous lecturer made a critic on my work. Instead of regaining a new idea or insight, I lost of all hope in my writing skills and how to write literary text. Thank you for this video it is helpful. I am a science university student but taking a humanities (philosophy/sociology/political science) based course about the environmental crisis and literary analysis is not something I’ve done since high school (a long time ago as a mature student). I read Daniel Quinn’s Ishmael but now have to analyze it in the context of some of the papers we read through the semester e.g. in context of the deep ecology movement or the idea of socially constructed denial. My issue is that I have too many ideas and I don’t know if I should be talking more about the mechanisms in the book or the ideas in the papers. Not much instruction was given. Any ideas?

Our son is stuck on 4 out of 6 points in AP Lit class essays. How do you identify an abstract idea? Is there an actual way to do it-or a trick for those of us trying to help out?

One way to identify an abstract idea is by starting out with one word or emotion (ex. pride, greed, disillusionment). From there, start to think about what message the author is trying to convey about that concept.
