@@HackMusicTheory because you're fair too kind also, my friend. You're the guy doing these amazing videos to help us and not not to show yourself, like youtubers usually do. I respect a lot the way you transmit the knowledge. Respect borns from there. I'm always honest, and for other so called "teachers", I'm not kind. And I cannot be kind with people who: 1. brags about something they don't actually know; and 2. those who don't have power of synthesis and don't want to have it either. If someone is doing a public tutorial, it is mandatory to respect at least those 2 points in order to respect the viewer. It is not "this is my channel and I do what I want" because it's absolute contradiction serving the society and the ego at the same time. That's false humbleness. Feel proud if you like; you do really do a great job. It's noticeable that you do it from the bottom of your heart. Thank you for that bro!

Bonjour Sarah! Thanks for sharing, that's a cool mix of influences. It's very exciting that you're working on a solo project, I'm excited to hear it! Are you planning on doing singles or an EP? Speaking of dark pop, one of my favourite artists and influences is Aurora from Norway, she's got some super moody pop songs. Also one of my favourites but definitely not dark, is a Jain de la belle France! Have you heard of either of them? Kate :)

oh yes, Aurora does great songs that's right! Jain is quite famous here in France, she's been a breath of fresh air in the French music landscape, along with Chrisitine & the queens. I'm thinking of stopping at 5 songs to test the waters and keep the others for live sets. What I think could be the single is almost finished. If you'd like to hear it I'd gladly send you a private link. If anything I'll you know when it's out :) Have a great day!

@HackMusicTheory 7 жыл бұрын
Aaah thanks BIG time, Aurelio, I truly appreciate your kind words! Not many people comment on the music/examples in our videos, and I write a new piece for every video, so it makes me really happy to know you're enjoying the music side of our videos as well as the education side :) And yeah, it's more common to write chords first, but as you've noticed, you often end up with a different sound from that work flow. Writing a bass line first will result in a focus on the low end, with the chords playing a supportive role. If you're wanting a section/song to make people dance, then a "bass first" method is usually the way to go! Having said that, you can obviously add a groovy bass line to a chord progression, but a "chords first" approach is just a little more of a limiting place to start writing a bass line. Have a wonderful weekend, Aurelio, and thank you sincerely once again for all your ongoing support. You rule!!! Ray :)

I suspect music “Theory” is possibly a near complete body of knowledge. not fully known by me yet..but by some of those who have studied this area certainly ... example Bach .. an infinite tool for artistic expression in any genera 🙏🎩... and so there is the freedom of artistic expression ..it’s great 🙏

Hi Kate and Ray, Thank You for Your most informative, motivating and humourous lessons in the 'digiverse'. I have enjoyed them all ! Because I am singing in five different kinds of classical choirs and one pop-/rock band, I would be grateful to learn also how to write catching backing vocals (choir stems) over (or better: 'to back') the lead vocal/melody. In a typical mixed choir there are 4 stems (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and in pop-/rock band only 1-2 stems added to the melody. As You know the chorus is the part of a song, where the backing vocals are most important to make it catchy ;)

Wow Ari, what a gift to have so much music in your life, you must be quite busy with 6 choirs! Good for you. Writing Backing vocals is a skill and when done well it adds so much to a song. ps. If you're looking for more advanced theory that goes more in depth, we've covered 3-part counterpoint in our online apprenticeship program. In it, our apprentices watch behind-the-scenes videos from our studio sessions where we write songs from start to finish, and teach all the theory along the way. They gain insights into every step of the songwriting process and learn our most advanced hacks, including backing vocals. We also do live Q&A sessions every month to answer questions about the process. If this sounds like it would be helpful to you, then you can find out more and sign up to our apprenticeship program over on Patreon, here: www.Patreon.com/RevolutionHarmony. Thanks again Kate ! :) Yes, I do love music and Your lessons about the Theory behind it! The video, You shared, woke up some interesting new musical ideas in my brains and heart ! Maybe I'll use the counterpoint or negative melodies some day along with the normal 'notes in the chord' -style. I also do admire J.S. Bach as a composer, and always enjoy when hearing his 'peaces' plaed with organs at cathedrals and churches. The theory behind polyphony may take too much time to put 'in a nutshell' in Your lessons, but I hope sometimes this would become 'normal' also in pop- and rock-music genre. And Yes, let's be in touch, and yes I'll seriously consider becoming a 'patron' in the project I like.

Hi Ari, we are so pleased to hear that the video had an impact on your heart and mind. I look forward to hearing how you put those ideas into practice in your own music. And yes, we too hope to inspire musical depth in popular music through counterpoint and other techniques used by great composers. Listening to Bach is a powerful and enjoyable experience (we actually got married to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier :)). I'm so pleased that you will consider joining the apprenticeship, yay! It really is an incredible experience to watch a new song unfold into being. Have a really lovely week Ari and have fun creating music in Garageband! Take care. Kate :)

@arimyllyniemi8445 6 жыл бұрын
Thank You Kate, :) I listened the Well-Tempered Clavier once again and found out, that YES Bach is really great or should we say 'superior' in his polyphony and yesterday, singing some of his pieces at the local church, was such an uplifting experience. Right now I am trying to find out an app (Win or iOS), which could output sheet notes (sheet music or ordinary notes from the MIDI-instrument tracks, which were used in an app, when writing the piece). Some stra-a-ange (and highly talented) people in our band are still using them in these modern days of digital tehcnology. Although, I have heard that J.S. Bach, Sibelius, Lennon & Mc Cartney used them too... ;) Do You have an idea of any app /software, which is able to do that ? (I'm sorry to burden You, with this purely technological problem, but in a band or a choir You must have some kind of notes to transfer the musical ideas to the other people. Often you cannot use the 'listening'/'ear based method'. Have a nice, beautiful and inspiring day as always !

@@HackMusicTheory I appreciate you a lot for making these videos! I mainly watch your videos because they are full of different strategies, advices and knowledge on how to make better songs. Everytime I watch videos like these it inspires me to make music. Even when I don't really feel like making music I instantly get motivated to keep working on my tracks simply because I watch videos from amazing youtubers like you. Oh and I am happy to hear that you are interested in what I make! I personally love making edm because it offers lots of freedom to express emotions through sounds that you can design to make them sound however you want them to sound. In other genres it may get a little restricted cuz sometimes you can't really force a genre on a particular melody. (Heavy metal for example has some restrictions regarding emotions that are being expressed through the melodies.) Even though I don't listen to the kind of music you make, I still sometimes end up liking them because they just sound good. Sometimes it's because of the sound of the instruments that you use (e.g. bass guitar) but mostly because they never really get boring. Sometimes I don't like them but still keep watching so I can improve my composing skills. Most EDM artists make music that repeats itself too often. It's like listening to a song where the buildup and the drop get copy & pasted and only slight adjustments are being made. You probably know the song called "Crab Rave". This is exactly what I mean - It's too repetitive and it gets boring quickly. After watching lots of your videos I understood the concept of variation even further than I did before. I am sorry for the long comment but I just wanted to share my thoughts with you!

Ray, do I need to start every note of every instrument/sample I use on the same note? Like how you start here on D, do you do that for every thing else too?
@HackMusicTheory
@HackMusicTheory 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kayla, thanks for watching and connecting, it's lovely to meet you! Great question, too. The short answer is: definitely not. For example, I could have started the lead synth melody on F (instead of D). In fact, for vocal melodies, I hardly ever start on the root note, as it's not very interesting. However, starting on the root note in this lead synth melody works because it's a super quick note that immediately moves to the minor 3rd (F), which is super colourful and emotional! Also, in this example, I wanted all the synths to lock in together, but for other lead melodies in other songs, I usually want them to stand out from the "accompanying" instruments. Anyhoo, I really hope that helps, and thank you for joining our Hack Music Theory community, we're super stoked and grateful to have you here! By the way, our weekly video comes out on Saturdays, so we hope to see you next weekend for more theory hacks! Hey William, thank you sincerely for taking the time to watch and connect, we truly appreciate you joining the Hack Music Theory revolution! Regarding the VSTs we use, we recently started using EastWest's ComposerCloud, which is mind-blowing: www.soundsonline.com/composercloud In this video though, we used ToonTrack EZ Drummer: www.toontrack.com/ezdrummer-line with their Dream Pop expansion: www.toontrack.com/product/dream-pop-ezx along with Native Instruments Massive for synths: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/massive and the bass guitar is: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/guitar/scarbee-jay-bass Hope this helps, and thank you kindly once again for your support! Kate :)

Can you do a guitar specific video for writing interesting diatonic licks/solo's? Ala, kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZi7i6KwmJyhq6M My stuff always ends up being too complicated or just cliche pentatonic crud :P, can you give your fellow musicians any insights on how you like to combine the basic intervals in your stuff? I really like the way that guitarist combines pentatonic riffs with a few perfect little diatonic intervals to tie it into a mood. Any hacks for the proficient (yet sometimes boring) guitarist? THANKS :D

Evan Tanner I have the same trouble every now and then I get riff I really like, but for the most part I end up sounding like a riff someone else has made.
