This needs to be taught in high schools
@sayhello5377

My family and I were just talking about how millennials were swindled into taking out student loans. It was the biggest lie of our generation. It was presented to us by our high schools, our youth groups, our parents, the TV shows we watched, books, movies, magazines, everywhere we looked, that going to college was just the next logical step after completing high school, and that you would be a broke ass loser if you didn’t earn a college degree in something. So we had an entire generation of people taking out $100,000 in student loan debt to study something useless like philosophy and then they ended up working at Home Depot and couldn’t earn enough money to pay back their student loans. I am in interior designer, and that’s definitely something I could’ve done without going to college. My husband is a cyber security engineer, which isn’t even when he majored in. My brother has his bachelors degree and government and works as a manager of a grocery store. None of us really used our degrees very much… There are so many things that young people should be taught in high school before heading off to the next step, whether that is college or whatever it may be.

@@sayhello5377if you chose to take out student loans for a career that is useless or one that doesn’t require official credentials that’s on YOU. recruiters are using keywords and booleans to look for cv search so the best way is to not out anything not related or your cv will pop out to wrong search

I recently had an interview where the manager recommended that I use a functional resume instead of a chronological one. There are templates out there, but you summarize different skills you've acquired over the years instead of listing job descriptions, then list job titles and time in bullet points. I had a lot of skills and experience that applied to the role but she had no idea until we spoke due to me using a standard format that didn't allow for a full description of what I did at each job. Hope that helps!

I've been a stay at home mom and house wife for over a decade. I've never had a resume and I only have had one job in the past 9 years. I don't even know where to start. I applied to a few places recently and got a call back, unfortunately when I tried to explain that I didn't have a resume and only had the one job. The hiring manager laughed at me and told me I shouldn't bother applying for anything because nobody is going to hire someone like me. Then he hung up on me. I'm not sure what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to understand the game you are playing. The requirements of the game are Resume, and Cover Letter, and Interview. These are the standard. If you don't have a Resume, make one. What kind of jobs are you applying for, what do you want?

Hi, I'm sorry you had that awful encounter. I do advise you make a resume even if you have limited work experience. But I also want to encourage you to add things that aren't necessarily paid work experiences. For example, I would translate some of your stay-at-home-mother experience as transferable skills, such as multitasking, adaptable, detailed-oriented, organized. Try to include hard and soft skills. You can google/youtube "Resume Writing" for students as a comparable situation to yours because of your limited job experience. Also include any volunteer work, even if it was just helping someone out with a community event for one day or your children's school with an event. I would even say your spouse/family--maybe you regularly manage your family calendar or plan meals? Most importantly, if you're a Christian, pray to God for this and leave it in His hands. At times we focus too much on what we lack/our supposed power over situations, but when we put our complete faith in the Lord, He opens doors no one can close and closes doors no one can open. He makes us find favor in other's eyes. May God bless you and help you in your job-seeking trial.

I forgot to mention that there are jobs I've heard most stay at home mothers have success in getting, such as transcribing or call center teleworking. Maybe they are more open to entry-level people? It's worth a try :)

But after the step 3, how do you propose to end it? Just like: "A motivated sales personnel with 4 years of experience with a background of infant care products with specialty in managing budget"? Doesn't that need an ending to complete a sentence?

do you use a professional summary or an objective as an entry level
@xcristinat

This seems like it would only work though when you know what career field you want to work in, have already been working in that field for 2+ years, and are only applying for a new job within that same career field. It doesn't make sense to use this if you're switching careers or trying to still gain experience in the field you want... Also, I've heard many people say that summaries or objectives on a resume are outdated? I'd rather use the space to expand on my work experience where I can put more details 🤷

So for the "what I do" part, should I put the job that is most relevant to the one I want? Or the job I'm applying for? I'm a behavioural interventionist applying for an education assistant job. They are similar jobs but in a different environment. The BI job is working with kids with special needs in their homes, and the EA is working with kids with special needs in a school/classroom environment. But they are technically different roles and I've never done the EA job before and I don't have the required certification but I'm applying anyway because I think this school makes exceptions when presented with the right candidate. Thank youuu!
