I don't even want to mention how many years I've been pitching. This is good advice, but it still comes down to querying the right agent on the right day with the right material.

Totally! But having a really good query letter makes a huge difference on that right agent and right day.

I'm actually surprised by how vague this query is. All the advice I've read says don't be vague 🤷‍♀️

Thankfully, self-publishing is growing and more viable than ever. Traditional publishing is dying.

Writing a professional query letter is, indeed, important, but it is largely down to luck, and what they're looking for. If you wish to be published then you have to keep writing query letters ad nauseum, one day someone will respond, though, hopefully, if you make your sacrifices to the Muses, and, by that, I mean write, write, and write again.

Hi, Im a teenage author that hopes to get traditionally published one day, and I've been binge watching your videos, they are so so helpfull! Honestly, what Im really scared about is writing a manuscript that I love and having it rejected. Sometimes it discourages me when I try to finish my book, but Im really hoping I get an agent one day :). Thanks for this!

Does this work for a children’s book series? I was born with Hydrocephalus, and when I was growing up, there were no resources for me. My co-author and I are writing a children’s book series about a child growing up with Hydrocephalus. We are trying to answer parents questions through the eyes of this child. The most common question I see is “Should I terminate my pregnancy?” This is almost always after the 20 or 24 week scan, and some doctor or ultrasound tech has given this the worst case scenario and recommended termination of pregnancy. I want parents to know it is possible for a child to have a good quality of life, and give children something I never had-the ability to see myself in children’s literature.

Thank you very much, Lauren. Your video was exceptionally helpful. I have one question: Did you have a large following either here or on social media or your authors website, before landing that six-figure contract? Thanks again, Lauren.
@laurenkaywrites

It came after! I had a moderate twitter following before I got the book deal, but most of my following came after the book came out.

Hi Lauren, Thank you so much for your video. Does this structure of querying work for children picture books?
@laurenkaywrites
@laurenkaywrites Ай бұрын
It does! But always make sure to carefully read individual agents' requirements for querying as they may have specific things they want for your particular genre.

I know this may sound like I know nothing about the process. I don't buy I am trying to learn. If you have a literary agent but you do not get an offer for that book, but you write a second novel do you have to query again? Or does the agent you are working with gets the 1st read?
@laurenkaywrites
@laurenkaywrites 2 ай бұрын
This is a conversation you'd have with your agent and may also be something included in any contract you sign when you sign with them.

Binge watching your videos! While ive got some really great feedback from agented beta readers and a former agent, im still having a tough time getting up the nerve to take the plunge and query (i think its a combination of worrying about the actual query letter + worrying that my 95k lgbtq+ YA urban fantasy novel isnt 'trendy' enough). Slowly bolstering my confidence w/ these vids!

Do you have any advice for a younger writer trying to get published? I’m in my late teens and my friend and I just finished editing our final draft of our book after working on it for four years.
@laurenkaywrites

That's really cool that you've been working on it together for four years! Have you let others read it? I always advise writers to share their work with friends, family, and beta readers (other writers/readers who you might not know, but who are open to reading it) to get lots of feedback :)

How do you write a query for a fiction anthology/short stories?

Great question! Identify the themes, and then give a sampling of the content within. You're pitching the collection as a whole, which ideally has some overarching thematic interests.

Thank you very much for breaking this down Lauren! After attending your Q&A, I was thinking self-publishing is the way for me to go, but then I started thinking, if 150-200 words is all it can take to get an agent, it is definitely worth pursuing and I have you to thank for that! Thanks again and have a lovely day! Dennis

@@laurenkaywrites Thanks! I meant to mention in my last reply that in the Q&A how it was discussed that social media numbers are not as important when writing the book, but I just created an Instagram account for the main character of my book that includes photos that are mentioned in my book, a sort of companion to my book. Hopefully it will also help bring some more attention to the book once it is published. I really do appreciate all the time you invest to help people; you're amazing Lauren!
