How to write a short story outline Secrets From A Short Story Writer | Outline For Beginners
There are a lot of different ways to plot out a short story -- this is the way that works best for me. When I have no idea what I want to write about, this outline formula works every single time.

I struggle with short stories because I always tend to flesh it out too much and include too many details which then makes it into an actual story rather than a short story. This video helped me a ton, thank you so much for being straightforward and detailed with your vidoe!

I totally understand what you meant by making it into an 'actual story'. The original idea begins to take on a life of its own and from there goes where it wants to go yet not what you had intended.

I have this problem! You fall in love with all the little details of the plot, so it eventually builds up into more than you'd like for a short story.

FACINATING! In under 10 minutes you taught me more about writing a short story - learning how to build characters, conflict and transformation - than I have from anyone else so far. Using an example like you did perfectly illustrated these elements of creating a successful short story. I'm 68 years old, but I've been haunted by a short story class I took in high school. I had to write a short story for the final grade, and I received a good grade for it. But personally, I was very disappointed in myself. I thought my ending was horrible and a cop-out. I have pretty good writing skills but it's bothered me for a very long time because in my mind, my creation fell "short" you might say, of my expectations and confidence I had for this project. I think your clear and encouraging video will give me the motivation to try again. Thank you for this video. Well done!!

Thank you! All the outlining videos are for novels. I needed something for short stories, because I want to master that. It would be awesome if you had a generic, printable version of this outline that we could all use.

That was some great advice for how to outline a specific scene, but not so much about how to outline an entire short story.

This was really helpful. I took notes while you're talking. I think for my very first short story I will use your priest scenario as a prompt :) thank you so much! My 2021 goal is to write 2 short stories per month for the whole year.

This is really a fantastic lesson. In a lot of books, blogs, and videos, people talk about what the different elements are but in an abstract way. The concrete examples you give in this really make the concepts clear. I had several aha moments here. Thanks.

Thanks! This really helps with writer's block. Anyone can think of a simple character, and the rest is intuitive. It makes writing seem less daunting with a simple outline.

Sydney ! Wow , what a presentation. Clear, concise and full of brilliant information and ideas. Easily as good as I have seen, heard or read. The ideas and how they rolled and changed with each plot twist would entice anyone to take up the craft. If you are a teacher, you are surely a great one, if not, you could easily be one ! Keep the videos coming , seems as if you have many talents in spades. Very best wishes. Anthony - a teacher !

Looks like you have got your 100 sub x 10, very well done! (almost x 20, keep it up) I like how easily you started with the one counter trait, and it snowballed into two just for that fact that stealing kind of go hand in hand. The bonus was when you added the part where the main char got away with it. Makes a great lead in to having a church official finding the accounting error, and the main char goes from the frying pan into another one! Best of luck in your writing, and thank you for sharing. I'm taking a writing course atm, and I think your outline technique is going to help with my first assignment!

Thank you so much for this video. I'm trying to write short stories, but haven't found an outline that works. YOurs gives me enough anchors to create a solid short story without having too many steps (I'm a pantser). and shutting down my brain. Better yet, there's nothing to memorize since you can understand how and why the progress works.
