One of the most important principles of writing that I know, which is not mentioned here, is, “Don’t tell, show.” You can hear this principle in action in two very fine songs of the late 1960’s, “Who Knows Where The Time Goes,” by Sandy Denny, and “Changes,” by Phil Ochs. Also I just want to say if you don't want to be vulnerable (which you don't have to be if it's something private or you don't feel comfortable then don't write it) you can create a character and write something from their perspective and write how their feeling and everything so that people think it's relatable and touching still but it doesn't have to be something personal and it could be a part of a series :)

Alot of artists have done that and also if you want to write something personal it can be ambiguous cause there are plenty of songs that we believe are about one thing but are something entirely just remember to be descriptive and you can make up a story to diverge from the true meaning and make it interesting

I know this is a year old lol but something that helps me sometimes when I'm feeling stuck is looking back on old songs I've written and changing the lyrics to make them better. If you have a song with a good melody but you aren't proud of the lyrics, that doesn't mean throw the whole song away!

These are such good tips!! Especially the 3rd one. Giving yourself a few limitations really activates your creativity. As for discovering new music, there's also a lot you can learn fron the old music legends. i started listening to Fleetwood mac and i was blown away by the songwriting, they have a very distinct style

I find that something that helps me is listening to songs without reading the lyrics. since when I sing it I'll sing a portion of it and then randomly make up the rest of the lyric. gives me a starting point for the rest of it.

I like that your writing had an unusual rhyme scheme by making “-round” from “around” slant rhyme with “town” and “spine” which all have this “ah” sound in common I don’t see this type of rhyming used enough outside of lyrical Hip Hop. As a songwriter for the last 10 years I could take these words and write multisyllable rhymes such as - Around the floor (instead of around) - My spinal cord (instead of spine) - A town resort (instead of town) Other 4 syllable rhymes that could work would be “like I don’t know”, “my final form”, “why I record”, “nice guys be cold”, “about rewards”, “swiped right before”, “lifestyle reform”, etc

This is the most helpful video i've seen about songwriting as you're actually telling us based on what other song writers usually do, what I mean is poetic devices! Every songwriter uses it and that's what qualifies it as a song's lyrics rather than just a paragraph of I don't know.. emotions?
