Seriously? The best way to write laugh-out-loud dialogue is to write witty characters that speak that way? Why didn't I think of that?

Situational comedy mixed with dark comedy dialogue is a pretty good way to get a hell of a laugh too.

My concern is that comedy has recently changed. So many people now take jokes personally and are offended. They don't think the character is "offensive", they think "I am offended". And the topic could be quite benign, not just sex, religion and politics. For example, it may be a joke about being short, having red hair or having big feet and the biggest taboo areas today are race and nationality.

Hi Richard, you make a great point! A suggestion we have is to have a table read of your script - this can be with a group of friends or colleagues, even family. See which jokes hit and which ones don't. It will give you a sense of what is working and what isn't.

@@ScriptReaderProLosAngeles Very good suggestion. For me, a family "read" would be best. They already know I think outside the box, so hurt feelings are rare. I mentioned the word "abortion", for example, and was quickly told to take that out of a short play. Who would have thought . . . certainly, not me.

@@richardrobertson1331 it's good you're receiving opinions that are helping you shift perspectives. In general, know that any suggestion, whether a family member or a professional, is subjective. Our advice is to use your best judgement, and if the note gets brought up more than once, it's something to consider.

I wonder if this works for films that are in the parody/satire subgenre? I have a least three of these types of screenplays. I have grown up watching "Blazing Saddles" by Mel Brooks (1974), "Airplane!" by Jerry Zucker, David Zucker and Jim Abrahams (1980) and "Scary Movie" co-written by Marlon and Shawn Wayans and directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans (2000) and wrote three screenplays that fall under the aforementioned category.

I already had this covered for my comedy script, I have come up with ideas for bizzare characters and absurd, irrational situations to generate the humour, I'm now looking for advice on writing funny dialogue. I felt there wasn't much advice given in that department other than "try to adapt existing jokes".

Want to share some of my knowledge. Find a comic character with a twisted perspective of the world... that will be your angle in which you character will speak and interact. Next, bring your comic character into the real world, vice versa. this Juxtaposition will naturally birth comedy. Use superiority theory (making the audience feel more superior to your character for he or she doing stupid ####) but a comic character in a terrible situation, easily births jokes. Use associations for specific jokes (youtube it). My best advice... learn to write jokes then you just incorporate it into story.

Dude, your basically saying just rob jokes. Just becuase you paraphrase a joke does not mean it isnt stealing. It bloody well is. Cant believe you think this is ok. And its also really lazy.
