People who aren’t composers tend to make MIDI instruments play notes that their real-world counterparts cannot play. Each instrument has a specific tuning within an orchestra, and a placement within the orchestra working from lower pitch at the rear to higher pitches at the front flanks, with brass and woodwind filling the centre - its more controlled than that, I’m just using it as a visual aid for the mind. Everything in it’s rightful place, and everything playing fixed tunings relative to 440Hz or A4, note A of the 4th octave on a grand piano. Whilst string instruments can be tuned in different ways, they still have to be tuned to the instruments whose tuning cannot be changed - piano, wind instruments etc. A Dropped D tuning on a guitar is exactly that, the top E is dropped 2 semitones (D# to D) to make certain chords sound fuller, this is because the top E, or the Bass note E, 2 octaves below bottom E, is dropped because it’s rarely used - it’s often muted by the thumb. So in the case of a guitar for example, standard tuning is E A D G B E across 2 octaves - and once a string has been used it can’t be simultaneously reused until the note or chord changes - keyboardists tend to play all instruments as they would play a pano, instead of playing them as the real instrument allows. ie. you can’t play a 5 or 6 note chord on a 4 stringed viola, violin, cello etc, but keyboardists can and do - and therein lies the biggest problem and the main reason keyboardists struggle to compose without knowing the instrument, it’s tuning, it’s harmonics, it’s placement within the 3D audio space, how it sounds in a mix etc. If you want to compose epic orchestral pieces on a keyboard, then learn the tunings, octave range, how to play legato, pizzicato, or staccato on strings, and which instruments cover which octaves. Bass, Cello, violas, and violins, because you need all 4 to get a nice fat string-pad. The specific chords are irrelevant at this point - but learn the circle of 5ths, learn your scales; chromatic, aeolian, major, minor, augmented, suspended, fifths, sevenths, ninths, and so on for another 10 years - you cannot learn to play in 4 weeks - all you learn with these apps like synthonia is ‘monkey see, monkey do’ and if you can’t play by ear or read music then you’ll never be any good. It takes years of hard work, passion and dedication - and lessons. My research degree in Mass Spectrometry was easier than learning the fundamentals of music, resonant harmonics, pinch harmonics, feedback harmonics, genre rules - what makes rock and roll sound like rock and roll? The tempo? The instrument? The scales? The chords? The keys? The time signature? Good luck with tutorials like this - they’re great if you want to sound exactly like that, you’re not learning how to improvise on that and it still sound epic, symphonic metal or orchestral. It’s a long road, and you need to be able to get yourself to the stage in the video above, if you can’t it’s because you aren’t learning your instrument. With keyboards I inherited a pen upright piano, which I played every waking moment nearly from age 7 to 19, by why time I’d learned all the basic triad chords, their inversions, playing non-root bass notes, various rhythmic patterns (arpeggios) rolling into chords, hammering them, playing softly, when to sustain etc etc - it took another year after that to understand what I’d taught myself, helped by taking classical guitar lessons which now form the basis of all my ideas. The iPad and GarageBand make sketching out ideas so easy. The acoustic guitar teaches me what the keyboard shouldn’t be playing, and with a few glasses of class A alcohol the world opens up and that’s where I live. I’m 51, I had a brief musical career but science and a young family changed my priorities. I can honestly say though, that without music, I wouldn’t be alive today. It’s the life force that runs through my veins, along with electrons and other elementary subatomic particles and how to manipulate them to work for me instead of them just being and invisible energy source.

Fabulous. I can do most of this. My problem is expanding that short progression into a longer, more involved piece with many moving parts and changing dynamics. That’s a bit more tough. But I love this short piece here. Very logical.

hello! this is great! What Program did you use for this, and do you have any recommendations for a good music composing program?
@wangchingvamnokhu2606 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback, I have programmed this on Nuendo and regarding the good music composing DAW there is no such thing, every daw has its own different approach depends on how you use it. I have shifted to Ableton Live its great for sampling and the drag and drop features are really great... Like said do not be confused there are lots of DAWs which will make your Job done master one specific and you are done, which Daw are you using?

@wangchingvamnokhu2606 жыл бұрын
Hi #ANTHONYRONALD For violin melody Please check the library from 8dio Adagio violin, 8dio Adagietto violin legato patch, it's a good realistic Kontakt sample library, there are lots of good samples library on the market this day but this is my go-to library when I do strings section, just need little bit of tweaking modulating an expression that's all. Let me know if anything you like to know more.

Where can i get the needed sound banks without spending thousand of dollars? Any tips appreciated
@FireAngelOfLondon3 жыл бұрын
I realise this post is seven months old, but for anyone who has this problem look up the Virtual Player Orchestra (Google or whatever search engine you use). It's a full orchestral sound set in SFZ format and it is FREE. No, it isn't as good as the expensive sample sets but it is pretty good and will get you started learning to compose for an orchestra.
@scottmcall99716 жыл бұрын
What's the perfect tempo for songs like this?
@Abhishek-cx2jq6 жыл бұрын
If you're aiming at something emotional or dramatic, you can start experimenting at 80 BPM, and if needed or not satisfactory, you can increase it by multiples of 4 (idk if I said that right, basically add 4 to that tempo [80+4=88 and so on] if you're scoring for picture). However, if you're just making music just on a daw and not for a live orchestra, tempo should not really matter, since you can sequence the notes in anyway you want using different note lengths and articulations. Hope this helps.
