In this video I'll explain what the main string instruments are and how to compose emotional string passages that sound realistic and flow graciously.
It's important to say this isn't the ONLY way to write passages with emotional sustained strings. It's a nice place to start, but there are infinite ways to do this, each yielding a different vibe or result.
PS. When I speak of the "dynamics" parameter in this video, I'm referring to the Modulation Wheel or MIDI CC#1.

You are so talented! Its only a matter of time before you are scoring a huge game or film. As someone that wants to start writing orcehstal music like you do, what string libary would you recommend? I'm considering spitfire bbc symphony core. What would you suggest though?

Hello, we would suggest a Nucleus library. Alex chose Nucleus for our beginners course as well, so if you are interested in learning to work with it, try out the course online www.artmaster.com/course/orchestral-music-production

He already wrote lots of bangers and a couple AAA trailers (Endgame for instance) and also interviewed Bear McCreary in a Playstation even recently so it's only a matter of time I agree! I highly encourage you get BBC Core, Nucleus just doesn't sound very good and isn't as versatile, you can write great music with it of course but it is what it is, with BBC Core you also get split sections which is the best way of praciticing when you are a beginner and the best way of learning to orchestrate:) ultimately the genre you are making does matter a lot, if it's hybrid or epic music it can be more forgiving as in you don't necessarily want it to sound super realistic or like a classical orchestra, but ideally you want this to be a conscious decision so knowing how the orchestra works and sounds is crucial, and there's no better way to learn so than with split sections. Just keep in mind if you get dedicated libraries in the future these ibraries (BBC, Nucleus) will most likely not hold up really well, unless it's for layering on top of something else and achieving a bigger sound, but out of the 2 II think BBC would offer more value combined with the other dedicated options, the woodwinds are really good, (By the way by dedicated I mean buying strings, brass, woodwinds, etc. libraries separately which usually offer more quality and deeply sampled sections but are more expensive, in which case I'd definitely get Pacific Strings if possible, the composer of the Star Wars trailers and an upcoming Disney feature film Blakus says it's the best commercial strings library out there and it sure as hell sounds like so, you get lots of dynamics, articulations based on repetition sampling with different speeds that reacts to the way you play, etc. Lots of content and ridiculously easy to use) In the end go with whatever options seems and sounds best but make the most informed choice possible. Here's a video on Pacific strings! kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3Sxe5qfob6ml5o

This is very encouraging and well shown. Sorry, I don’t have Nucleus, but I do have the Lite version and I got the Hollywood Opus as a present. That s**t is big and I’m still learning. Where do I start out with what, Lie version or Opus?

Great points. But just to be clear, Nucleus has such great sounds that even the choppy first version actually sounds ok ;)
