@@apophisca2163 i think you just need to stop rolling the r, like in gRRass, but more like a soft, but crisp noise, a very quick D sound. after a while, it should be okay. you can try with grass, and then move on to other words that roll RR. soon enough, it’s easy to ra ri ru re ro :)

Everybody talking about how they can't understand what he's saying when there's literally subtitles with direct English translations smh. I mean I know not everyone uses subtitles but whenever you don't understand a different language on KZbin, unless subtitles are disabled, it's always there! It's so weird but makes so much sense that so many of the characters have connected parts on a computer, like き, but look different. It explains the curves. I see the parallels to calligraphy in the Latin alphabet I'm used to. Moving your hand in loops, continuing a motion without making a line so the next stroke is balanced, is something that's improved my English cursive. Now it's time to apply that to Hiragana!

Margaret Landry the first five are a i u e o and yes “a” is pronounced “ah”. “i” is pronounced “ee”. “U” is pronounced “ooh”. “E” is pronounced “eh”. “O”is pronounced “oh” This is how it works for all of Japanese. There are probably a couple exceptions but I am not that far into the language to know. But if you read something it is almost always pronounced the same way for all vowels.

if it helps, he covers hiragana in alphabetical order. So yes it starts with A, and moves to I, U, E, and O (this is the vowel order in Japanese). After the set of vowels without consonants, he moves on to Ka, Ki, Ku, Ke, and Ko. And so on, the alphabetical order is A-Ka-Sa-Ta-Na-Ha-Ma-Ya-Ra-Wa-n. If you can memorize the order of vowels, and the order of consonants (keeping in mind consonant vowel pairs are always together and progress in the same vowel order, so basically once you hit "sa" you'll move through "shi" "su" "se" "so" before moving onto "ta" and so on) you'll basically have memorized the alphabetical order of phonetic Japanese. It's a bit goofy, but in memorizing the alphabet at first, I broke it up into segments, so I knew free vowels were first. Next was "ka-sa-ta-na" which I memorized by thinking of "KUSAnagi the KATANA" or KUSATANA = ka sa ta na. Then "ha-ma-ya-ra" I think of the word haramaki (waist sash) and imagine someone just misspelled it. And then in terms of Wa and -n I just think of the fact that Wa and Wo are fairly infrequently used, so much so that their other vowels have been essentially deprecated so it makes sense they'd be last in line. And -n always ends words, so it also makes sense that it would be the last character in the alphabet as well. hopefully that helps anyone trying to learn Hiragana.

I love it how the strokes connect with each other, it's very logical and makes it easier to write once you see it, just writing turns into art. Beautiful. Your explanations help more, with a voice that is peaceful and relaxing, too. Enjoyable.

Following your handwritten characters with the invisible connectors and angle descriptions really helps me grasp the "why" of each characters stroke pattern. Trying to learn from typed diagrams that don't explain anything but stroke order just made me feel like my handwriting was trash. Turns out learning from handwritten characters improves your own handwriting!!

Oh my gosh this helps a lot. I suck at writing Hiragana (especially あ,え,そ) and I don’t know how to memorise how to write them without seeing them. I've seen this video more than once and this is the first time I'm really going to learn how to write hiragana. There's nothing I really have to say but I'm just happy because I can mostly understand now what he's saying compared to the first time I saw this vid. It made me realize that I'm really progressing. So to my fellow learners out there, don't stop learning even if you feel like you're not progressing and have a nice journey learning the language!
