Thank you! It is so great to hear about pure and good friendships that DON’T turn into romance! P. S. I am working on a book with a boy and a girl with such a friendship.

But it's kind of hard to find books with only close friends. I like romance, but everytime i open a book everyone are dating. Sometimes you just want to appreciate the other important relationships.

Thanks, Abbie. I have had many platonic friendships with women. I think one way to make such real in a story is never to write them as neutered (androgynous): My friendship with a woman is different from my friendship with a man; while I do not flirt with a platonic friend (I realize some men do), I do acknowledge her womanhood and femininity. Platonic does not mean neutered. Yes, secrets (and in-jokes) are important and effective. My preferred kind of secret is one that is not selfish or malicious, but one necessitated by greater circumstances and other loyalties: more inherent - and inherited - conflict. That complicates the ensuing suspicion and distrust, causing more internal conflict for the protagonist, who may understand the need yet feel betrayed.

FINALLY! A course on writing just good ol basic friendship. Not of the friends to lovers variety. There's actually no romance at all in my WIP but there's two platonic friendships at the heart of it. One that my protagonist has had since forever, and another that blossoms throughout the story. I want the reader to care about and root for both. To sign up, is there a specific patreon tier we have to select or will any do to be eligible?

This video is hopefully going to help me a lot in my story. Because I just want to have a little hint of a romance in it, next to nothing really, but mostly platonic relationships. Thanks for this advice.

Love this video!! Whenever I read a novel or watch a tv show or a movie. I'm always interested in the relationships and the dynamics between the characters. Particularly on platonic relationships. I find it so interesting of how all of the characters react to each other. So, when i saw this video it made me feel so happy. In my current WIP I have characters who are coworkers at the Protagonist's workplace.

So my WIP is a fantasy and mc is a queen (kinda) but her in her own words most loyal solider and first knight/second in command is her bff from childhood. They were separated when they were young but are reunited by the time the story begins. even though they're friends there is also a hierarchy. So not only am i balancing a platonic friendship but also the superior and underling dynamic.🙃

Just watch the late Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in the past Fast and Furious movies - including the very first one. That is how you write a beautiful best bro/brotherly relationship with a great arc and journey. The ending of Fast & Furious VII is beautiful.

Thanks so much! I've already written my novel, but I want to make it better before submitting it to my publisher. It's gratifying to hear from this video, that a lot of what you talked about in here, I've already done with my character relationships. Only without really understanding the actual principles of what I was doing, with conflict and backstory and secrets from one another and all that. Armed with the info from this video, I believe I can improve and build on what I already have. Thanks again!

@AbbieEmmons this is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much! #AskAbbie A question: I am writing a mystery-comedy novel, and I have to make it 80k words. But the problem is, I can't seem to write the novel that long 😅 and to top it off, it has a lot of different plots, like super important side stories and side character backstories. Do you have any tips on how I can write an 80k words novel like that without making it too confusing and annoying? Thanks a lot!

As a guy, I can say, most plutonic relationships are NOT that way because both want it that way. In fact, many of the girls who were just friends wanted more from me... and you would expect it to be the other way around. At 58, I have been increasingly informed that the women I thought were like my sisters, in fact, wanted it to be more. I say this so that the reality of showing how one person is a friend and the other wanted more is important narrative fuel. Sure, I have had a very few female friends I wanted to be more, but generally no.

Hii Abbie, it was great video, supper helpful, however i have a question. I'm just wondering if it's definitely required to follow all six principles in order to develop a solid plotanic connection that leaves the reader thinking, "I want a friend like that in my life." because of the fourth point (keeping secrets). what. If there isn't much action/drama in my protagonist's life that they would like to keep a secret.

How do you write this down? I use Character Templates but they never adress this topic and give a good possibility to cross over character relationships without getting totally confused because you would have to write it down multiple times (in every character template) and without it becoming unmanageable because one change would have to be changed in multiple character charts. I hope I can make myself clear, english isn't my mothertongue :)

I have a question. Do you still not read reviews of your books? Why? Don't you think you could learn from them? The ones to 100DOS all point out really problematic aspects of the book you should really look into. Cause if you don't, they will find their way into your stories again and again and your books will never reach full potential because they will all have the same problems. They are not about writing techniques. Writing stuff is really debatable anyway. They are about content. Like the romanticization of unconsentual romantic interaction (Weston and Tessa's first kiss). And the younger generation, aka the target audience of "ya contemporary romance" just doesn't find such things acceptable anymore. You not reading reviews at all is like a "screw your opinion, you don't have anything of substance to say, I know everything better" to your readers. I get not wanting to engage with hateful people. But most hateful people are too lazy to read anyway. I've never come across a purely hateful review. Just ones that make good points and explain them thoroughly.
