HOW TO WWOOF FOR BEGINNERS - THE BASICS FOR WORK + CHEAP TRAVEL

WWOOF aka World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, is a really fantastic way to travel, meet new people and learn a little about farming in the process! Workaway, and HelpX are other programs that offer similar opportunities where guests volunteer their time in exchange for room and/or board. All are fantastic options for traveling the world while on a budget. Save money on the cost of sleeping accommodations and food while getting to socialize and learn, what's not to like there?!
I have experience in a number of places including Canada, California, Hawaii. In addition I’ve researched farms in Thailand and Costa Rica and talked to many other WWOOFers about their time as a vagabond worker ;)
I encourage anyone to try it, no matter your age. If you are able-bodied and open minded, we can find something for you! Friends, food and fun, what’s not to like?
Firstly, a few things about how to navigate the website. Each area of the world has a different site and membership. You’ll buy a membership which typically lasts for one year. After making your profile (with good photos) you can start browsing farm profiles. You’re able to filter results with your preferences (ie. vegetarian/vegan, smoking/non-smoking etc.) and use key word searches. Most WWOOF sites will also have reviews from previous WWOOFers. You’ll havee access to the host’s contact info, sometimes this includes their address which you can google for their location. E-mail them with a little about yourself, your availability and any questions and you’re all set!
Before getting started a few things you should know: Not all farms are certified organic farms, some are just people with a backyard who need a hand. Also, not every exchange is for full room and board, some you have to pay additional or supplement your own food. Lastly, know that there are no consistent standards. All farms are maintained individually and things like safety and cleanliness are up to the discretion of the owner. Some farms will be paradise and others pigpens.
Ask yourself, what are my intentions? Keep in mind what you’re priorities are and it will help you in finding the right fit. Are you interested in learning, making friends, and/or travelling?
In researching farm profiles be sure to find out your length of stay/commitment; exact work hours & type; what food is provided; how many WWOOFers on the property at a time; what are your sleeping accommodations; what is transportation like around the area?
If their descriptions are a little light, you might want to contact them and ask: How much experience is required on your behalf; What is the kitchen type (ie. veg only); What do they grow & can you eat it; Their location relative to town?
As for general tips… Be sure to pack light, be a minimalist! Don’t forget to make all your arrangements (ie. how will you get from the airport to the farm?). If you feel uncomfortable about committing to such an unknown, try and get a farm on recommendation, read reviews from past WWOOFers, ask to Skype your host beforehand. Always keep in mind that, if you don’t know something (like which plant is a weed or where to put your tool), just ask! Take advantage of your hosts as a resource for learning the inside scoop on the area. Be ready to work - take it seriously. Often this is people’s homes, plus, you’ll get more out of it! Arrange in advance. I started preparing 6 months prior. Farms have to plan their sessions and so there might be a wait list. Know your options - if after giving it a chance, if it’s not going well for either or both parties, you can leave. I’d say be respectful as much as you can, try and have a conversation about it and provide some constructive feedback. You can also review them fairly on the site. Acknowledge any of your participation in this as well. Lastly, stay open! It’s going to be a lot of new, but give it a chance =)

I'm in my quarterlife crisis right now and I get really anxious about my future (where I'll live and career mostly). I'm struggling through my master degree, getting it done to have at least one diploma that has some value in my field. After watching your video and some others on the wwoofing topic, I really want to give it a try in like 1.5y after I graduate. I did an exchabge year in Japan so going back there for 6mth st least would be awesome, aswell as wwoofing in Australia for 6mth at least. Thanks a lot for your input!! ❤️

I felt so much light from this video and from your experiences. Thank you so much for sharing this (: Hawaii is where I'd like to start the journey of this. Finding a personal recommendation of a farm would be ideal for me. With being a very passionate vegan, organic fruit farms and being surrounded by work that supports my ethics would be something so refreshingly new and in alignment with my journey to experience. I've yet to travel alone and the idea is so liberating and fulfilling. And not in the sense of just going somewhere to experience the energy, land and culture, but to also be productive and make a positive influence as well by contributing. Money isn't the only form of currency, and woofing really emphasizes that. We all can be a community and sustain together to create an experience unmatched by money. I live very minimal already, and once you decide that owning things isn't appealing and fullfing to you anymore, money starts to loose its demand and appeal as a measure to possibilities
@katgreenvideo
@katgreenvideo 6 жыл бұрын
I love your additude gGadget! You are right, travelling alone is probably the most free one could feel. I really enjoyed my time with minimal possessions, operating via energy exchange, I somehow felt a deeper intimacy with my community. Being a raw vegan I too had my preferences as to what an ideal farm would be. I knew for sure that I didn't want one with animals. I was looking for one that I'd be able to eat solely off the land, however wasn't able to find it, and as you heard me mention, it all worked out. The companionship, the land and the accommodations easily made up for that. It sounds like contribution is important to you. I hope that you can find a spot that will appreciate the purity of your intentions. I trust you will align with what is right for you. You have a beautiful outlook! I too feel your light😌✨

Ha ha...New bugs...Love it! lol I'm an avid gardener and am no longer squeamish about bugs/insects anymore. I actually got over arachnophobia from being a full time gardener. Still jump to high heaven when I see the occasional snake though. I also see soooo many bee, wasp, hornet species etc. and learned so much about them. I don't grow huge gardens anymore but love growing and gardening so much. Now my kids are grown and moved away. I look forward to trying WWOOF. :0)
@katgreenvideo

Yeah gardening will desensitize you to bugs for sure. I chuckled at your comment about snakes😆 They can certainly be startling. One of the neat thing about working with plants is learning about each bug, their value and consequently developing an appreciation for them🙂

Hey Kat, loved this video. Thanks for sharing all that information. I have been seriously planning on wwoofing next year and I had one question though. Honestly, do you even get to travel and explore other parts of the country you're visiting or do you just work on the farm all day? Because I am interested in exploring and travelling as much as I am interested in learning about organic farming so I would like to do both and not just be engaged in farm work all day.
@katgreenvideo
@katgreenvideo 6 жыл бұрын
+Samyuktaa Chawla Hi Samyuktaa, great question. I have to say that every farm is different in that regard. One place that I was at was 7am-noon, Monday to Friday and another place was 8am-3pm Monday to Friday for example. A third place I was at was only 20hours a week, but they didn't provide food. Some farms will allow you to work intensely for a bit and then have a week off. Asking about the hours per week and their willingness to accommodate your desires is something to inquire about with each farm manager during the application process.

Something that concerned about is how to deal with my current housing. While you’re gone, do you leave your rent paid? Do you legitimately move out while your gone and then find a new place when you go home? What about whatever job you may have back home? I currently work and am in college so I’m not sure I would even have the time to do this. What do you think, kat ?
@katgreenvideo
@katgreenvideo 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. That’s really going to depend on your personal situation. Perhaps now is not the best time for you. Maybe consider Wwoofing for your next summer vacation or for after you have graduated. Alternatively, consider doing it for a short time, like two weeks - That way you can maintain your job and housing. You may want to sublet your place while you are gone, or if it’s for a longer period of travel, maybe moving your things into storage (or a friend’s house) and finding a new place upon return would better suit you. I have another video on travel that may help answer some of your questions👉🏼 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5K9k3iCq5ZqiZI

great video! i thought it would be too long but it's just info-packed. Question: do you speak any other languages? did you experience any language barriers? I want to wwoof in s.am. but i don't speak Spanish 😬
@katgreenvideo
@katgreenvideo 5 жыл бұрын
I only speak English!🙊 Nowadays you might be able to get away with it seeing how predominant English is and how many translation apps there are. But, I will say, it can be seen as pretty disrespectful to wander into a country and expect the locals to accommodate you. Taking some time to learn about the culture and language beforehand will go a long way.

Thanks for such a really helpful video! I noted that you said you WWOOFed somewhere where you were the only WWOOFer and you were mainly doing work in their backyard. This is similar to what I'm going to be doing this summer in Spain. I was wondering what was your experience like being on your own and did you ever get bored? haha, thanks so much!
@katgreenvideo
@katgreenvideo 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't get bored, no, but every person is going to be different with this right? For myself I was coming out of a long time of being in school and therefore around a lot of people on a consistent basis. I was looking for a period of solitude to balance this out. I did make an effort to explore the area and I also had internet so I was able to stay connected with others. Enjoy your summer in Spain!❤️

Hey kay, quick question does wwoof cover your visa fees and arrange all that for you if youre wwoofing far away?
@katgreenvideo
@katgreenvideo 6 жыл бұрын
No. Wwoof is simply a platform to connect farms with those looking to learn about farming. You have to take care of all your travel arrangements and costs. Farm hosts may though be able to answer some of your questions based on their exposure to previous Wwoofers who needed visas themselves.

I’ve never heard of a farm helping with a plane ticket. Typically wwoofers make their own travel arrangements. You’d have to contact the farm host directly to ask if they’re willing to let you bring a pet.
