This video shows a common cause of fishing reel failure - too much grease. I use a Daiwa 2600C as an example of an over jealous repair. Too little grease causes reel failure. So does too much! See why.
I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please "like" it. If you want to see more, please subscribe. Questions? Comments? I reply to all.

Hi Dennis, thanks for this video, funny how folks are saying about packing reels to prevent corrosion, back in the 1970's/1980's we used to pack reels for carp fishing here in the UK. Mostly this was done with Mitchell 300/410's and abu cardinal 55/57, it was while fishing with a closed bail arm and anti reverse off, a take would set the reel spinning backwards, we called them 'churners' back then. The grease was to slow the reel spin to avoid tangles, we tended to use vaseline petroleum jelly. This all went out of the window with the advent of the first shimano sea spin baitrunners. Thanks again Dennis

I have seen on KZbin where a reel service person advocated PACKING a Penn 704Z with grease. He said it would waterproof the interior of the reel. I don’t like to call names but this guy is an idiot! I apologize for saying it but to do this to a fine Penn Z reel is just plain sinful. I collect vintage surf spinning reels and have found some really horrific treatment of what were once outstanding, examples of engineering genius! This was a GREAT video that everyone who works on reels, particularly vintage reels, should watch. You are the best. Thank you Dennis! - Christopher
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
So - the guy is not an idiot, but you or I would prefer not to do this. Packing the reel with grease is an old timer's trick to waterproof the reel when you are chest deep in the surf. The idea was to prevent water intrusion on the older "leaky" reels. It is not a bad idea, but it requires constant attention to change the grease frequently as any salt, sand, or debris that enters with the water gets stuck in the grease and eventually causes damage, either by drying the grease out or becoming abrasive. The modern reel design do a better job of keeping the water out with gaskets and seals. - Dennis
@roadrunner8428
@roadrunner8428 3 жыл бұрын
Back in the sixties and seventies as I remember, surf fishermen would pack the housing with grease to prevent salt water from entering. They would clean it out once a year and repack it again for another season. Now a days the newer high end reels have seals to prevent water from entering. But who wants to spend that kind of cash. Grease is cheap so long as you maintain your reel. The magic word 'maintain'.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 жыл бұрын
You are right and I did pack the reels for my surf fishing as well. The problem as you note is that it must be changed each season, otherwise it dries, or the salt and sand form an abrasive paste that will wear down the gears - Thanks - Dennis

I think the key to lubricant application to a reel is picking the right lubricant and putting it where it needs to be to perform the job you want it to do. I personally use a little extra grease in the gearcase and also in places like under the bail arm where the spring is, and under the rotating head where the anti-reverse dog and bearing retainer plate is. A light coat on all these parts can really help prevent salt intrusion and corrosion. My choice for grease is also the Penn grease and I also add a splash of STP oil treatment in the gearcase and mix it in a little. I don't pack the reel but use a little more than you do, and it makes most of my reels buttery smooth. On some reels that may leak, I may put a very small amount of Permatex ultra black sealer on the side plate mating surface to help seal it up. Also, an appropriate size o-ring placed here or there will help seal up an older reel. Just finished up restoring an old used and abused Daiwa 7000C and it looks and feels like new. Only part that really needed replacing was the line roller. These old Daiwas were tough as nails.

I also find old classics like Mitchells, Daiwas, Shakespeares and such to fix up for my own use and enjoyment. Great hobby! Anyway, yeah a little original (blue bottle) STP oil treatment added to the reel grease thins it slightly and makes a noticeable difference in how smooth my reels feel. Especially those old Mitchells that can be quite rough. I also left a comment on a Penn Fierce video you have. I'm replacing both main and pinion gears in a Battle 5000 right now. Used only a couple times and gears are rough. Pinion has noticeable roughness on surface of teeth, and from years of messing with reels I have found that any flaws on the teeth, you will feel it! Bought a Long Beach 65 off eBay. Couldn't hear the anti reverse but it turned, albeit sluggishly. Opened it up and I honestly believe someone tried to fill the entire reel with axle grease. Both sides of the cup on the spool were entirely filled with thick black grease. You could hardly make out the different pieces. The handle side bearing screw was entirely caked and the shaft was covered. I can't imagine how they even got so much grease into the reel, it's like the used a grease gun. It took me hours today, but the reel is now nice and tidy and should come back to life beautifully but it was a disgusting mess. I went through a number of sets of gloves today.

There are two schools of thought here. One is they didn't know what they were doing and the second, they did! Sometimes folks would overload the grease as a form of waterproofing it for surf fishing. If the grease was there, the water wouldn't be, or so the thought goes. The problem with that approach is that the grease will Cath the contaminants, like salt and micro sand and it will also evaporate and dry, so unless you were constantly changing it out, that approach did more harm than good. Sounds like you got to clean up someone else's mess. Nice to hear that it is back and working - Be well - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle yeah I actually think this is the latter of those just because somebody really made sure every little area of the reel was full of grease. It sure looks like they were doing it for a reason. The biggest pain is that it's 100% not fishing reel grease it's heavy black what I believe is axle grease. It did protect the parts however, they look flawless after cleaning and a little polishing. Just a massive clean up effort.

Yes - I grease all internal moving parts and I oil the bearings as the line guide mechanism if there is one on the reel. A fair amount of grease is good, but do not overload as it will only get thrown off the moving parts and eventually dry on the recesses of the reel.

John - this should be easily solved. Most manufacturers use a series of shim washers under the spool to compensate for the variation in stroke. The shim washers sit on top of the saw toothed click rotor on the spool shaft. If you are spooling unevenly to the top, you would need to add one or two more shims. If it is spooling too much to the bottom, you should remove one or two. You need to play with it to get it exact. Of course the question is where to get the shim washers. Check the shim that is on the reel. The extras do not need to match exactly, but the hole needs to be the same size. If you notice that one from your other reels fit, then you can order that one online. You can also check EBAY and other sites for the used parts. You can also try various home, hardware and automotive stores as well as arts and crafts stores to find substitutes. The washer may be a hard pressed fabric or it may be plastic. The replacement doesn't matter. As a last resort, I suppose you could cut a few shims out of a thicker piece of plastic foil in the approximate shape and poke a hole through the plastic with an awl. This doesn't need to be pretty and as long as you put your fabricated ones under the existing ones and sandwiched between the click rotor and top shim, it should work. That's what I would try if I couldn't find anything else. Of course, I have a bunch of parts reels, so I would normally take a shim off one of those. Thanks for asking - Dennis BTW - the Pursuit and Fierce reels are good alternatives.

@@jshall1000 Shim washers won't work. It will pile up just as unevenly but a little lower. It's simply the design of the reel for how it's geared to bob the spool high and low enough to spread the line evenly. Cheaper reels will often have this poorly thought out engineering.

sure thing. I use oil on bearings, level wind worm gears and felt drag washers. Oil evaporates faster than grease, so I don't use it on most mechanical parts like gears, swing arms, crosswind blocks, etc. I don't use the grease where there is exposure to the outside (bails for example) or worm gears, because the grease is thicker and can trap dirt and debris rather than help, that hurts performance. Joey - you are OK using the Penn grease on the washers, except for the felt ones (Pursuit, Fierce as examples.). Felt should be oiled. Grease on felt is like fly paper. It traps dirt and eventually causes the felt washers to wear or rip. A lot of folks switch the felt over to ht-100s if the problem persists. Penn just made that change withe their Fierce III and Pursuit III series. You can also use Cal's to lubricate your reel and not just the drags. The greases are different formulations, but somewhat interchangeable. - Dennis
@riccardocarbo2479
@riccardocarbo2479 4 жыл бұрын
You "reely" should NOT put oil or grease on the drag washers. They can become tacky/sticky and create a problem called "stiction" where the spool pays out line in a very stop n' go manner. Some greases/oils can affect the materials of the washers. Penn's HT-100 won't foul, but it's not going to be smoother with the grease, ironically. Clean them with Dawn dish detergent and a toothbrush, dry them out, and then set them back in. Run them dry. It'll work like new--smooth n' steady. After fishing, release the pressure by unscrewing the drag knob to almost no pressure, each time.

My reel does not werk smoothly , hard to crank now. Still too much grease in the housing for sure. It is dark brown and thicker than usual. What can I do now? I think I'll throw my beautiful DAM fishing reel in the trash. Can the grease cause corrosion, wear or any other damages? Is is bad? I couldn't find any wear or corrosion in my reel. Why is it that so often when you see this it appears someone filled it with automotive axle grease?I I bought a 302 parts reel once that was almost picked which would really adversely affect the operation of such a fine over-engineered Mitchell. I'm not so sure the grease caused any damage that you point out. Is the anti reverse clutch still working? Lots of fellas in the North East pack their reels just like that. If you don't have something like a water tight Van Staal reel, then you will get salt water intrusion. That's a fact! And especially if you're fishing in water up to your chest in the crashing surf. There could be hundreds of hours of fishing on that reel. The main gear looked great after you cleaned the gunk off, but that gunk (looks like Lithium grease, which ain't the greatest for a reel) is probably what kept it in good condition. If that reel got dunked, and had little grease in it, that main gear would be pitted. I'll take too much grease over not enough grease any day of the week in the Montauk surf.

If it works for you - go for it. I have opened up too many reels with grease that turned to tar and was full of contaminants while being overpacked. I repaired reels for years and have quite the experience and knowledge about lubricants and lubrication. You truly have no idea what you are talking about with over greasing a reel and "causing it to fail." Over-greasing a reel will NEVER cause damage to it. Quit making shit up. Here you are saying it's a "common cause" of "failure." Automotive grease is excellent for gears in a reel. Any moly-graph type of grease will be fabulous. Yes, use oil (not grease) on the shaft, so it moves more freely but if you did use grease, it'd be fine. Good ole 3-in-1 oil is excellent, and so is synthetic motor oil you use in your car. It's enough to last a life time and is incredibly sophisticated stuff. Teflon oil sprays are also perfect for light movement of bail wire cam pivots. The trick to proper lubrication is using the right thickness at the right places. And quit digging around with a screwdriver! That grease turned dark because it oxidized--depleted it's corrosion resistance charm. I have about 50 to 60 different lubricants. Each one is perfect for the right application. I do miss repairing reels, cleaning and lubing them.

I appreciate your opinions. I have seen too many reels bog down and quit because of dried grease and poor maintenance. The tips I give to folks, to only use fishing reel grease and oil, is because most folks, unlike you, have no idea about the properties of various lubricants. Axle grease, white lithium grease and vasoline all have their place. My position is that the place is not in fishing reels. If you want to use motor oil, go right ahead and do that. Thank you for sharing. BTW, I have been shamed into using a brush for the grease, so I no longer use the screwdriver. Instead, I pick brush hairs out of the mechanisms from time to time. Best wishes - Dennis

,@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis, I must have been in a foul mood when writing my post! I want to apologize for what seems rather harsh from me. Yikes. You're right, most folks have not the least notion about correctly choosing and applying lubricants, let alone cleaning properly before lubricating. A word about petroleum jelly (Vaseline)--it has no lubricating properties between two metals. I've done many tests. For rubbers and plastics it can lubricate quite well, but it can also weaken some of types, causing premature cracking apart. Take a latex or nitrile glove and drop various oils/greases onto them and you'll see the rubber pucker/mishape as it changes/weakens the latex. I don't know if petroleum jelly weakens nylon or acrylic plastics but I'd like to re-test. But Vaseline is absolutely dangerous to metal surfaces. It caused scoring and galling almost immediately. Rub it hard between the backs of two spoons, you'll see. Just 3-in-1 oil will outdo vaseline by a long shot (and smell really good). V jelly has no metal-to-metal anti-wear properties whatsoever, no extreme-pressure additives, probably no anti-oxidants or anti-corrosives, and melts away in hot temps--all exactly what you don't want from any grease. I use engine assembly grease on gears that have Teflon and moly-graph in them. I only use brushes when I can pick the hairs back out. Better brushes don't shed, really. A toothbrush seems okay, or a coffee stirrer/ice cream stick is good too. Synthetic motor oil is awesome except it does tend to dry out sooner than dedicated reel oils. I tend to prefer bicycle chain oils and greases w/Teflon. In case they do dry out, the Teflon is still there. Cheers, mate.
