In this documentary we bring to life Russian Defenses in Ukraine with a 3D simulation in Unreal Engine. The purpose of this video is to give historical context and analysis for these modern fortifications for people to better understand what the Ukrainian Offensive is up against.
We begin with a quick overview of the war in Ukraine and how the Russian Army came to form a defensive line. We then compare these fortifications to other major defensive projects from history. Broadly speaking this includes border fortresses such as the French Maginot Line of WW1 and Field Fortifications such as Erwin Rommel's Devils Garden of WW2. From these we determine that Russia's fortifications in the Ukraine War are more similar to the latter with several key points of overlap.
Next we turn to the specifics of the Russian Defensive line. This begins with a high level overview of the Russian warfront before we zoom into the level of a specific section of the battlefield near Bakhmut. It is at this point that we simulate the Russian Defenses in 3D.
Here we layout the the lines of defense which include minefields, anti-tank traps, infantry trenches, vehicle revetments, artillery positions and more.

If you're wondering why the trenches are behind the tree line, and they don't just cut them. It prevents enemy armor from getting a direct shot at the trenches. By the time they can get a direct shot they are well within rpg or other man portable anti-tank weapons. It also hinders bridge laying vehicles from putting a bridge over the ditch for any armor to cross.

His name is general Mikhail Teplinskiy, the commander of russian airborne troops, and currently the field commander of russian forces in Ukraine . The guy has a rich experience of offensive operations, most notable is Chechen wars. Now he is using his knowledge to predict the enemy offensive movements and make effective defenses.

I am a little shocked that you didn't mention the defensive belts constructed around Kursk to counter Zitadelle. Attacking these crushed German offensive strength for the rest of the war. My grandfather is pushing up daisies outside of belgorod, killed on day one as part of Großdeutschland. Defended static defensive belts work.

They do, but the battle of Kursk was won by feeding wave after wave of armoured and infantry reserve divisions into the fray in vicious counterattacks (The Germans having to deal with Operation Husky and the strategic bombing campaign in mainland Europe was a great help as well.) If the Soviets had just "sat there and taken it", and only used local forces for local counterattacks, it is quite possible, that your grandfather would have been on the winning side of that particular battle. Static defenses are an absolutely amazing force multiplier, but that is all they are. Ukrainian success relies on what kind of reserves the Russians have been able to scrape together for operational counterattacks, whether or not they can get them to commit said forces dealing with diversionary assault operations, and whether or not they can strangle Russian logistics locally to diminish Russian combat power.

The German Southern pincer at Belgorod did advance twentyseven kilometers within a week and broke through all major defensive lines ,they did even win the battle of prokhorovka. Citadel was stopped because of the russian counter offensive at orjol and the sicily landings. It is not a proof that static defenses work.

It only focuses on the static defences ignoring other elements like helicopters, ATGM crews, 10:1 artillery advantage Russia has, the advantage in manpower, etc. Ukraine on the other hand, has nothing. The current army it has is the last one it could ever muster. It has no economy to speak of with the grain deal gone. It is suffering constant blackouts. Everything it needs, let alone weapons, are given to it from western countries. We are talking absolutely everything, from generators to medicine.

A gazillion Ukrainians (20k+) have been killed since early June yet they have yet to reach Russian first line of defence. Ukraine is undergoing a counteroffensive against the most defended fortifications on earth, while suffering from severe shortage of ammunitions (as per Biden) in a war determined by the use of them (again, as per Biden). Ukraine has 1:10 artillery disadvantage, no air support, no electronic warfare, etc in addition to having no way of producing their own weapons. The weapons Ukraine is using are a mish-mash, piecemeal of all kinds of random crap NATO has scrounged out of their shed. In addition to all of this, Ukraine is literally running out of men to fight.

Lots of artillery, mortars and drones is the only thing that can significantly weakin these defenses. If the Ukrainians are skilled and a little lucky, they can manage to develop infantry in the rear with helicopters.

I would say that is quite the understatement, helicopters are sitting ducks for Russian airpower and even ground based rocket launchers because they(Ukr) have little to none airdefence munitions left. Let's say they send 20 helicopters a few kilometers behind these lines, that's just a hundred or two soldiers if they all manage to even disembark them, losses of helicoters would be huge even during returning to base, those few ukies would be isolated outnumbered and outgunned with thousands of Russians all around them with more on the way and not just soldiers, drones, helicopters(which can shoot from dozens of miles away, it would be a slaughter with those ordering such mission put in jail or worse.

There are very important things to add to this: First, The extensive use of drones, both as a kamikaze attackers (the lancet family of drones being the most notable) and for scouting and vigilance, providing support for artillery fire (most of Ukraine's advances have been on rainy days, because that hinders the drones, thus the artillery is much less precise) Second, aerial superiority. Russia routinely supports the defensive efforts with helicopters and jet bombings. Ukraine doesn't have an airforce to challenge them anymore, and their anti air vehicles are prime targets by drone attacks. Third, electronic warfare. Russia has been using electronic warfare from day one. When the Ukrainian forces are getting close to certain areas near the Russian defenses, their communication devices stop working. Also, Ukraine can't make widespread use of drones as the Russians do because of this- Russia can effectively nullify those. Fourth, supply chains. Russia keeps doing long range attacks on supply chains, ammo and gas depots and other important targets like aerodromes in order to hinder the Ukrainian efforts. Fifth, automated mine delivery systems. The Russians can deploy minefields as wide as a couple of football fields at a range of about 15 km using the ISDM Zemledeliye. The mines can be programed to be timed or selfdestruct after some time, so it should be no risk with those after the conflict is over Because of all of this, Ukraine is having trouble just moving in the control zone- an area of some kilometers before reaching the actual defense lines. It seems that so far they have been unable to reach them.

You are not taking into account what we know from wars already. Every obstacle is not losing quality its actually gaining it as time passes, because it digs in further and further into the ground. For example freshly placed dragon teeth is easy to remove by pushing them, but half a year old dragon teeth are because of the rain actually dug in 5-10 cm + vegetation.

What’s really scary, is I know someone who works for a security firm and they have encountered fully composite explosive devices, sometimes used as mines that are incredibly hard to detect. The one he talked about was claymore style, with a carbon-fiber composite base/body and a ceramic fragmentation structure. The only metal is in the trigger mechanism but it’s hard to detect and my friend said it would be completely possible to remove even that metal for want of a fused mechanism instead of a trigger. He suggested that dogs were the only reliable way to detect them and specifically related to my questioning him about potential combat use (instead of VIP threats like his job) he said it would be unlikely for it to be detected any other way. It would just seem like a rock in the ground and that sweeping them with a dozer would be the only way of clearing them.

They're cleared in a few ways, moved out of the way by a dozer, triggered by a sacrificial element like a leading mine roller wheel, or by a spinning flail chain, or they are sympathetically detonated by another explosive like a mine clearing line charge. No need to detect them, just to push them out of the way or make them go off harmlessly.

@@msytdc1577 What you described is the way to clear classic aria denial mine fields. However he is talking about MON-50 and MON-90 plastic body mines, these are directional anti personnel mines used to protect strong-points. They basically work like buckshot fired from cannons in Napoleonic wars end are triggered by the defender via wire. They would put them 10 to 70 meters in front of the trench on higher ground or on tree and activate when attacking infantry is already in the kill zone. Obviously sending dozer or mine clearing vehicle directly at maned enemy trench is not the best idea. The way this mines are cleared is by artillery preparation, that is by firing certain amount of rounds at certain size aerie around trench.

Well depends on how it will end. If they wanted, either side could end the war right now. For Ukrainians that would mean decades or centuries of oppression and for russia it would be humiliation and possibly regime change. Both sides think they can win - thus there's a war. Peace is a noble goal but when one side (in this case Russia) doesn't value its benefits then suffering takes place.

What I have been taught in the Army is likely high speed of avenues of approach as they call it meaning a major road that can be used for major military traffic for an attack. As a defending force you have to make it difficult or make them think impossible to make that crossing to penetrate your lines. First is creating obstacles to channel them into pre-positioned kill zones with artillery, mortar, and anti-armor systems. A defender would likely want to make this either a hard place to deny an enemy to enter or set them up to be destroyed depending on the commander's intent. Bottom line is all obstacles placed by a defender is always observed and have pre-positioned fire plans for it's defense or channel an enemy to be destroyed at a predetermined position. War is politics in another form, defeating an enemy either offensively or defensively is an exercise in thinking, maneuver, and destroying an enemy to defeat them. Unfortunately real people on both sides will die. Either side with the most morale or willingness to fight will determine who will win and be decisive in combat in strategy. Meaning you can attack and fail or defend and fail. Fight smarter not harder is the key. San Tzu once said " A general who has never fought a battle and won on a battlefield because he was in a favorable position deserves praise.". Yet in the same term, " A general will yield battle in order to destroy the enemy on his own terms.". The Art of War is practiced in peace to deter your enemies or in war where you actually have to use it.

That's why Ukraine is so obsessed with villages and meters gained which are once more lost the next day. Ammo dumps, airfields, bridges and roads are being destroyed everywhere. Power plants and Ukraine command posts are on the target list. When I think about current defence lines I think about battle of Kursk where the Russians used multiple lines of defence, trenches, minefield and natural terrain to slow down the german mechanized units.

Usually air superiority by carpet bombing these defensives lines would be used to make multiple breakthroughs however without neutralizing enemy AA batteries and interceptors planes this is near imposible and you have to do it the hard bloody way which is precisely what Russians wants. Probably one of the reason why ukraine is in dire need of a fleet of F-16s for its multirole capabilites, however even with them i doubt it will be enough without a proper bomber platform like the B1 to carpet bomb with jdams everything in a wide area neutralizing soldiers, dragon teeth mines etc to make holes in the defense.

“Round the clock” is a bit of a stretch, especially considering how much Ruzzia struggles at night, and even in daylight it’s spotty. (The bigger threat has been drones when vehicles are navigating minefields). Ukraine has been dedicating most of its air defenses to cities in the North and East, leaving the front and Odesa slightly more open. But it’s about to receive 4 more NASAMS batteries and 50 Hawk batteries, which can easily take down choppers and Su-25s. Ruzzian air support is about to get a lot more difficult. The prepared fortifications are actually poorly manned, because Ruzzia has been using most of its manpower forward of those positions. It’s gambling that slowing Ukraine’s advance will discourage both Ukraine and its NATO support. But the downside for Ruzzia is that if Ukraine does reach the main fortifications, they’ll be much easier to breach if the defenders were already killed trying to prevent Ukraine from getting there in the first place, and if they’re starved of ammo and supplies due to Ukraine targeting Ruzzian artillery and logistics.

@@Ddrumzzz12 Last I checked the Russian energy sector is in shambles which is a pretty big problem for them considering how much of their GDP came from that sector. Also supplying Ukraine is getting easier and easier for NATO the more their military transitions to NATO equipment. The big problem (beyond of course slow Western leaders) is that Ukraine was mostly using Eastern bloc equipment of which NATO has limited stock and very limited support networks in place. However take F-16's for example. They're not the best plane around, they won't outclass Russian planes when they arrive and Russia even has a select few plane types that are superior. However unlike with MIG's (which only former Warsaw pact members had in stock and even then in very limited numbers) the West can keep on sending F-16's all day every day provided the Ukranians can find the pilots and maintenance crews for them. A lot of nations will even find donating thei F-16's to Ukraine a good way to clean house to make room for newer planes like for example F-35's. Also the cost of supplying Ukraine is high, but it's not that big either considering it is not only weakening Russia (which I'd say is a good use of NATO money considering NATO was created to defend against Russia), but it's also a good way of cleaning house. Munitions, rockets shells,... have shelf lives and like I said for vehicles it's a good way to clean house to make room for newer stuff.

This isn't really news but a general description of how the defensive system might have been conceptualised, so closer to a documentary. Especially the numbers at the beginning are likely taken from the Ukranian MoD or a western media outlet, which in turn takes its intel from aforementioned. So likely not solid data. Hope he can make a vid like this a few years after the fact, where the actual scale of the conflict can be accessed.

So far, after a month into the Ukrainian counter offensive, we could see that the Ukrainians are having a very difficult time advancing. As far as i know, the Ukrainians have not manage to reach Russia's main line of defense yet.

They are doing a similar tactic as in Bakhmut letting the Russians burn out. Small probes exposing Russian artillery which the Ukrainians tgen destroy, just look at the amount of artillery and GMLRs being destroyed on a daily basis. They will wear the Russians down over time whilst taking small patches of land. The Ukrainians have vast reserves which the Russians don't seem to have and better moral, most Russian conscripts don't even know why they are there. But time will tell.

Dragon teeth - these light weight types are not exactly bad cuz their light weight, it can be used on purpose, when engineering vehicle tries to get them out of the way using front plow, they rotate which ends in one of the spiked ends digging deeper in ground causing it to be stuck, also blowing them up might be difficult, only good way is to drag them away which serves its purpose for slowing the enemy. So overall as for cheaper version, they are good fast solution, they dont require long exposure on front lines as for cast ones. Another method of usage can be predefined perimeters of cast and pre-cast obsticles which lure enemy into more easily removable ones. As for mine fields, they can also be add under the dragons teeth, when concerete block is moved, it explodes. Various traps can be placed around them as well, as an example we can look on Maginote line or on Czechoslovakian bunker lines, where barbed wires were attached to dragons teeth with various explosives or for anti personnel with granades or AP mines making it harder for engineering units. Wide trenches - very good ancient technique, under fire very difficult obsticle, as seen in some footages vehicles were stuck in it or were forced to go around them on exposed locations to enemy fire. Eng. units can build makeshift bridges over them under the smoke screen whom can then be used to cross in light vegicles or depending on materials used - metal platforms or logs can be attached to APCs or other vehicle to then be used. Explosives or shells with enough power can cause sides of these trenches to collapse making their slopes better for crossing as well. At any time, as it might seem more easy, its needed to be reminded of constant small arms fire, mortars, artillery, drones, tanks, anti-tank missiles etc. the quickest is the obsticle overcome, the smaller losses are, which is need for succesful breach with enough force to hold. What wasnt mentioned is a tactic very well used by Germans in WWII, defence lines are build in a such way, that attacker is lured in pre-planned manner or he must choose the hard way. Luring consist of gaps in between layers, missing or less dense minefields, gaps in bombardment or not focused small arms/mechine gun fire. When attacker reaches this pre-planned gap in defense, then he finds himself on exposed ground to heavy units or surrounded by minefields, airborn minefields can be deployed too, so attacker becomes surrounded and kept down by firepower. You can find very good description of entrenchment tactics on large scale in many WWII memoirs as well as in modern era books on combined arms tactics and finally in real time as new techniques are developed according to trends in warfare. Feel free to expande or correct.

73 easting was a battle between vastly different forces. Although there are differences, the majority of Ukrainian and Russian troops are fighting with similar equipment. Hull down has its uses. Besides, Russian armour likely doesn't need the tactical mobility of a tank in a defensive battle.

In truth, the main reason why the Russians have set up defenses is because the Ukrainians have mobilized an absurd number of men, often using equipment on-par to the Russian Federation’s equipment. As a result, fortifying and going on the defensive while waiting for the Ukrainians to make their move was the best option, especially as the Russian Federation wrapped up their first conscription policy and brought forward the ~300,000 additional reinforcements to the frontlines. Mind you, if the casualty figures were correct, over 60-80% of the Russian forces would not be there. It is more likely that the Russian federation casualties are closer to 20-30% (~20,000-30,000 casualties) with a maximum of ~50,000 casualties. I would also wager that the total armor losses are closer to ~1,000 units rather than the 9,000 projected unit losses due to such figures being largely incorrect. In other words, the reason for the Russian defensive works is due to the Ukrainian numerical advantage rather than Russia suffering crippling losses.

@@kirkpatrick7475, the LPR and DPR’s military forces were already using T-62s for years. Most of those units will either be going to them, will be used as training vehicles, or will be used for rear-line duty. With the integration of the DPR and LPR into the Russian Federation forces, a serious need to activate older tank models for use by those forces was necessary in order to furnish those troops with better equipment than what they were already using.

I would have probably compared the fortifications more with the soviet defensive lines against Operation Zitadelle (WWII) than the Hindenburgline. Allthough the Russian might lack the armored reserves, that the Soviet could sent into battle.

Seeing as we are at the end of the year, it seems that Ukrainian offensive has failed and Russian defences have held. I can't remember any place where Ukraine actually breached these defences, they only captured some villages Infront of the defences. At the same time Russian troops has breached Ukrainian fortress defence around Avdeevka which was build and reinforced over 10 years.

Ukraine has recaptured & reopened sea-trade lanes & from the recapture of kherson city has a beachhead across the Dniepier all while Putins forces have air superiority . At some point this year Ukraine will get F16s, which while old are more than capable vs Russias Migs. Putins artillery supplies are now increasingly from the North Korean regimes even more inferior stock.

There is also no such thing as dog fights in modern warfare, a missile is launched in the air from km's away and finds it's target and destroys it. Victory between a MIG and F16 will highly depend on the types of missiles equipped. Russia has developed new air-to-air missiles which have a striking distance of about 300km. NATO has no equivalent, besides that there are also ground to air systems which can shoot down F16. There is no guarantee that F16 will create air dominance for Ukraine, on contrary they can become a PR disaster for the west. Also what does it matter where the artillery supplies are coming from as long as they work and there is plenty. Which in case of Ukraine is no longer the case, as NATO is out of stock and they produce way to little.

That's why, I believe, the US decided to send cluster bombs. Cluster bombs are an effective means to clear mined areas quickly, even if somewhat unconventional - that's not what they were meant for, because nobody except Russia would think of burying millions of land mines over thousands of square kilometers. And that's also why it's important that Ukraine gets F-16s as soon as possible. The dug in tanks and all artillery positions will be quickly destroyed, once a few F-16s run a few missions over a particular sector. Also, F-16s are relatively well prepared to face Russian AA systems. Ukrainians have already destroyed hundreds of Russian S-300 and S-400 systems, with precision long range artillery and missiles, no AA battery close enough to the front to pose a threat to F-16s will survive for long once its position is communicated by the F-16s. Tanks and tube artillery, in the absence of effective AA defenses, are sitting ducks for fighter jets, especially when they're dug in and can't start moving quickly. One more thing is that Ukraine doesn't need to push through the Russian defenses everywhere. They just need to make a breakthrough in the direction of Tokmak, Melitopol, Mariupol or Berdyansk. Once they cut Russian forces in two, they can easily destroy the Kerch bridge - they get close enough to hit it with too many missiles at once to loose all of them. They'll also be in a good position to hit Russian naval traffic that would try to supply Crimea. With Crimea isolated, with tens of thousands of troops denied any meaningful route of supply, with Crimea starved of water, those troops will have to eventually surrender, literally die of thirst and hunger or evacuate with huge losses by ship across the Kerch strait. That will constitute a blow so dire to Putin's leadership that there's a very high chance that Russian leadership _will_, finally, change, with the new leadership retreating from Ukraine - whoever comes next, even if it will most definitely be just another dictator, will need the resources being spent in Ukraine to consolidate his reign and crush opposing factions, which is why he'll at least temporarily need to pull out of Ukraine. Plus, once such a breakthrough is made, all Russian fortifications become vulnerable to attacks in their flanks and rear. They're not protected by minefields there, and the heavy fire support weapons, such as artillery and buried tanks, will be the first to fall. It will all happen, sooner or later, it will just take quite a long time to create that initial breach. No fortified line ever has held indefinitely.
