that one felt awfully personal and does not feel like the standard case. I also don't see this happening on my regular train rides between Linz and Vienna. Sometimes they have their backpacks on the seat, but I have never experienced anything other than "Ja, der ist noch frei" (or similar) followed by them taking away their backpack. (unless it was actually reserved of course, like their SO temporarily left for the bathroom e.g.)

As an Austrian living in Vienna I can say the unfriendliest city in the world, distant but professional service and giving your bag its own seat on the train all have the same cause. Austrians especially Viennese love their privacy. A service like in the US is for us Austrians rude - we don´t like it if the waiter always interupts our privacy - if we want something we ask for it, the bag gets its own seat only for the reason that we can sit alone in the train we know if all seats are taken we have to give away this seat but some people get obviously grumpy ^^ this privacy issue is also the reason for the unfriendliest city in the world ;).

This begs the question: what is the difference between having a desire for privacy and being misanthropic? Where do you draw the line?
@jpoesi
@jpoesi Ай бұрын
@@LisaHerger The desire for privacy in Vienna, or Austria in general, is about valuing personal space and boundaries, not a dislike of people. Austrians are not generally hostile towards others. They may seem distant, but this is more about a cultural preference for privacy than any negative attitude. They can be friendly and helpful when the situation requires it. There are really only two things that make Austrians, especially Viennese, grumpy: feeling their privacy is invaded or when someone breaks the numerous unwritten rules (being loud in public, standing on the left side of the escalator, not letting people exit before entering public transport, etc.).

About that A.H. remark. Yeah, the Leader was born in Austria, but he hated the concept of Austria, which at the time was the heartland of a multiethnic empire where 2/3 of the population were Slavs. He strived for purity, meaning national as well as racial purity. In his opinion Austria belonged to Germany. After the Anschluss in 1938, Austria did integrated into Germany, or rather Greater Germany, as a province named Ostmark.

Yea I wanted to write the same thing. Hitler was born in Austria, grew up near Linz and lived in Vienna for a few years. But then he went to Germany, thought for Germany in the First World War, lost the Austrian citizenship and obviously had his whole political career in Germany. It’s not like Austria isn’t guilty in other regards. Many of the biggest nazis were from Austria and Austrians took a long time to own up to the fact that they weren’t the first victim but willing participants of National Socialism. Modern political antisemitism was in part popularized by Austrian politicians such as Karl Lueger, a Viennese major at the turn of the century and Austria had its only brand of fascism called Austrofascism. Hitler was surely ideologized in his youth by German nationalists in Austria, especially when we was living in Vienna, but it was Germany where he found his political footing and where we was able to do all those horrible things.

@@01benkenobi I read "Die Welt von Gestern" by Stefan Zweig. On his youth in Vienna, he remarked that Karl Lueger would sit on a table with a Jew and keep politics out of it. A good book everyone from Austria should read at least once. Also, I am Austrian but I am also myself - what crimes mustache man party committed has no bearing on me since I did not contribute to them; I am only responsible for my own acts not those of people who came before me. I was just on vacation in Europe. Austria was one of 5 countries we visited. Wonderful people, great food and no matter how much I tried I still didn’t get the color of the rivers to come out correctly in my photos. They were a powder blue/ light aqua marine color..just beautiful! My wife and I were in a restaurant (in Austria)having the best lunch I’ve ever eaten when an American group came in demanding umbrellas…this was in English. Then they saw it was a restaurant and demanded where they could buy them. Now these people had just passed 3 stores which had umbrellas for sale just to get to the restaurant! It was barely sprinkling outside….They were loud and rude! I’m American and was embarrassed by their actions. It also helped that I had been stationed in Germany while in the US Air Force and had actually lived at a Gasthaus for 2 years so I knew how much the locals like their quiet social time. This was my wife’s first visit to Europe and she had a great time….but I have to say I was a pretty good at showing her the ropes. Enjoy your channel, keep it up! Prost

Great video! As an Austrian, I can confirm most of it, but I have the following comments: 1. “Anton aus Tirol” is just the title of a (really cheesy) song. The artist's name is DJ Ötzi ;-) 2. Although "the man with the moustache" was born in Austria, he rejected the country as such and felt as a German. He fought for Germany in the First World War, lived in Germany and gave up his Austrian citizenship in 1925. He became a German citizen in 1932 - just in time for the “Reichstagswahl".

Also, keep the noise down during quiet times ... where I live, that's 12:00 - 14:00, all day Sunday, and later in the evenings. It might not matter if you're staying in a hotel in the middle of a big city but it is something to be aware of if you're renting a place to stay in a quieter residential area.

If you ever visit Vienna, I wouldn't recommend you the touristy hotspots like "Cafe Landmann" or "Hotel Sacher". The wait is just not worth it. It's expensive and often the staff is quite unfriendly. Even tho the Sachertorte is the most well known cake here, we do have a lot of other pastries. Just go for an apple strudel, an Esterhasy Torte or any other cake that attracts your attention. If you want to buy a whole Torte, be aware that those cost about 40€ and above, depending on the size. Austrians also like dishes with poppy seeds. You will find strudels, dumplings, noodles and cakes with sweet poppy seed fillings. I recommend you to try those. Since Austrians have a sweet tooth you will find a lot more sweet main dishes, like Kaiserschmarrn, Scheiterhaufen, Buchteln with Vanilla sauce, Germknödel, etc. Kids will definately like this. City people are quite different from the rest of Austrians. They are more open when it comes to foreign people. Most of them are able to communicate in decent English. Don't get surprised by the grumpy faces. It's a defense against fund raisers, beggars and other annoying people. In rural areas people are more reserved. The situation, where people nag because they have to remove their bags usually won't happen in bigger cities. For longer train rides I just recommend to reserve a seat for 3-4€ extra. Rural people are also more proud to be Austrian. They hate Germans and Viennese people since they often seem quite arrogant. If you want to break the ice, just have a few rounds of beer with them. If they let you taste their home made liquor, you are considered as friend.

I love it here! I became a new Austrian Citizen earlier this year and have already visited Linz, Graz, Thal (yeah, Arnold's place) and I have been in Vienna for over a month! I am considering living in Parndorf in the future but first I need to get some Austrian German classes under my belt. Austria is a fantastic country!!!

@appledomer

I think it worth mentioning, that you need to be prepared for a whole different experience, when you go to a traditional coffeehouse. While in “normal” places they serve you politely with an ”everything for the customer” experience, traditional coffeehouses have their own category of waiters called ‘Ober’. They have usually more of a “be happy that I serve you and you are not the center of my universe” vibe, which requires you as a guest to 1) have a lot of patience (because if you ask for the bill for example it can take sometimes 5-10 minutes to receive it) and 2) accept, that they have their own rhythm and way to work. So even if you signal him to come to your table, they will recognize it and then come when you’re “the next in their line”. If you’re polite you won’t have any problems. Also you have to take time with you, so if you’re in a hurry, then you should not visit a similar place that moment 😉

I have traveled to Vienna twice and I loved it both times. Most recently was in early June of this year. My German is rusty but I tried to speak German first. It expressed a sincere interest in what was going on. The flag was at half staff over the police station at the Hofburg and I asked the policemen standing outside why that was. They gladly explained. Also there was a green party rally by my hotel and I asked a policeman what it was about. He explained it was an EU wide referendum for voting the following Sunday. I love it there and am looking to live there at least part time. If you show an interest in the country and culture, they will embrace you. Although I like Germans a lot, I find the Austrians to be a little nicer. At the cafe at the Spanish School, the manager came and sat with me and we visited over coffee. When I excitedly told him how fabulous something was, he put his arm around me and told me everything is fabulous in Vienna! Right he was!

I go to a Vienna church on Sundays that is popular with tourists. Before Mass starts, a large part of the entrance area is fenced off from the main part of the church, making it possible for tourists to stand there and admire the building but not disturb the service. There is only one small opening in this fence where churchgoers can go inside for Mass. Now, every time I go there, tourists are standing right in front of this very opening, blocking churchgoers from entering. You basically have to fight your way through every time. I don't understand for my life how adults could be so thoughtless and inconsiderate...

A few additional observations as a Dutchie living in Austria for almost 10 years now: be prepared to say "no" after being offered more and more food/cake/wine/beer by locals at a cost. They will resent you declining their offer. Declining food is regarded as rude, especially if the host went to a lot of trouble preparing. They will ask you at least 5 times and most Austrians will cave in after so much insisting. Elaborating on that: try to avoid saying "no" to any offers of hospitality because Austrians will be offended. The only excuses accepted are the medical ones, so you might want to invent some sort of condition that prevents you from accepting an offer. Inventing things is no taboo here. In that regard, it's a lot like Latin America (where I lived as well). Austrians also absolutely detest being "corrected" if they speak dialect for not speaking "high German" (Hochdeutsch). They regard their version of German as superior and many will refuse to speak what they call "Piefchinesisch" (pronounced "PiefKinaysish"). That is the derogatory term for Hochdeutsch, referring to officers named Piefke in the Prussian army during a war against Austria in the 19th century, meaning "the gibberish ("chinesisch") spoken by the likes of Piefke". So if you hear words like "Fisole" (green bean) or "Paradeiser" (tomato) or "fadisiert" (bored), don't say "You mean: grüne Bohne, Tomate, gelangweilt", because they´ll get the message that your regard their dialect as inferior.

As an austrian i can tell you: - don't order Schnitzel with sauce - don't block whole streets with your big tourism groups - care where you walk. Can't tell how many tourists ran into me keeping focus on their cameras. Yes, our cities can be beautiful but pls don't act like you the only ones there - austrians hate to get filmed in public areas all the time. Pls enjoy the view, the architecture but stop holding your cams under peoples noses. Our old towns are mostly kinda cramped with people, so heads up and enjoy. - don't misinterpret waiters/waitresses for not being friendly. Its just how we are - short-mouthed, kinda stressed but welcoming. - on freeways, don't always drive left side or middle side. If you can, you are to drive on the right side so you don't block the traffic. It happens all the time with foreigners driving thru austria and don't care about the rules. - never expect austrians behave themselves the same in every part of the country. We have massive differences from west to east. We're small but a country with various dialects, social togetherness, etc. "Wiener" are different than "Salzburger", as well as "Steirer" are different to "Tiroler". We can appear cold and strange but thats mostly based on the horrendous english we speak countrywide.

The story of Ötzi is a little bit more complicated. Found by a German tourist, who alarmed the police, it was obvious from the start that the corpse was a few meters inside Italian territory. However, the Italian police denied to climb up to collect the remains (for whatever reason) and left the job to the Austrians. Once the corpse was brought down, its outstanding nature became more obvious and it was brought to the Medical University of Innsbruck, were all scientific investigations were launched and tons of papers published. The worldwide attention of Ötzi finally led to Italy's claim for the body.

Oookay, when it comes to music, Austria has much more to offer through the ages. Take Johann Strauss, composer of the 19th century (1800s). Operetten und Walzer 😊. Then the beautiful Vienna folk music from around 1900, Schrammelmusik. Named after the main composers, the Schrammel brothers. A very prominent "folk singer" of the early decades of the 20th century is Hans Moser. He also features as an actor in bw movies, famous for his tragic comedian and slapstick talent. And last but not least the Austrian mega popstar Falco, storming charts in the 80's. My generation who were teenagers in the 80's also remember popstars and bands like Rainhardt Fendrich, Tauchen & Prokopetz, DÖF, Hubert von Goisern and the hilarious EAV (Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung). We Germans love Austrians. No matter how fierce we might deny it - on both sides. We love the accent, we love their humor and their weird tv crime series, Vienna Tatort, Kottan ermittelt,... we love the food, the beautiful skiing sites and breathtaking motorcycle routes. We are like distant cousins hating and pranking each other. But if push comes to shove, Austrians are family 😊 PS: The language difference between German and Austrian German can be compared to the difference between Dutch spoken in the Netherlands, and Flemish, the Dutch spoken in the Northern part of Belgium. Same goes for the "love-hate relationship" between the Dutch and the Flemish people. Distant cousins with a grudge 😅
