The story of the (2nd) biggest automobile manufacturer and how they became synonymous with reliability. Toyota's production methodology is the basis of why most of the products we buy today don't fall apart, and how we can enjoy affordable cars, gadgets, and electronics.

xAmiin I am meticulous with maintenance, both my VWs were perfectly looked after. The issues included air mass meter, door lock, instrument cluster, electric window, ecu failures to mention a few. In 1993 my sister was accepted from harvard medical school as a fellow for a 4 year training in her medical speciality in the usa. So she left our country and went to boston. Budget was tight so she got a 2 door brand new 1.6 toyota tercel mt, no ac, no electric windows and a very basic radio cassette player for us $ 7800. I visited her many times. We travelled a lot in that vehicle. All around new england, to washington, to colorado, to arizona and finally to vegas and california. That car made until 1998 around 160000 milles with only basic services.- oil, coolant and filter changes, spark plugs, very few brake pads changes, battery changes, tire changes, , only one time change of shock absorbers, a couple iof engine mounts, one clutch kit, one timming belt set, some head light bulbs and as i know, nothing more. The car was running with no issues and the all plastic interior a little bit wasted but without any crack. Before leaving the usa she adverised the car for sell at the medical school bulletin board just in a post it, no milles and no price descrption. The day after a colleguee visited her and put 3500 us$ cash in her hands for the car, no major questions asked, she was buying the car for her daughter who was going to college. Thats how owning a toyota is, period.

I love my 06’ highlander. 178k miles and runs like new. No rattling noises nothing falling off. Just regular maintenance and the car does not look like it’s a 13 year old car. Do I care about how fast I do 0-60? No! Do I care about taking it to the track? No! But I do care about the reliability and durability of this truck. It’s been an amazing family car, plenty of space, rides very comfortable still today and I’m very pleased with the fuel economy. The V6 sounds pretty good and is fast enough for what it is. People waste too much money on “fancy cars” and then 3 years later they are worth almost nothing to what it was brand new. But you get what you paid for. I’ve had a great experience with Toyota and once this car dies, I’ll replace it with another Toyota, probably the Avalon!!! Great video

Granted the truck looks like it was beat to hell but still runs. They asked the owner what he would like to see improved and he mentioned the visor broke! Frick! The Toyota engineer was all geeked out to get his hands on this truck. Wanted to see how well the welds held up .. the freaking welds!!! I also think Toyota benefitted from adopting a “Malcom Baldridge” quality management system to improve their products. The Japanese auto industry was smart enough to to recognize they had manufacturing processes that needed improvement. They, in turn, corrected their reliability issues very quickly. I had an 83 Corolla liftback and it was a total tin can but the powertrain was very solid. From about the 90s onward, Toyota has done a much better job at making cars that feel as solid as they run.

I also have a 1996 Camry XLE in Red. It has 275,000 and still works. Recently we had to replace the radiator because the hose broke off and the engine overheated. Besides that the engine has a slight kick, maybe a piston or firing is slightly off? Either way, it still runs. My goal was to get it to 300k before I give up on it lol.

The only Toyota’s I really like are the newer (2010-2020) Tacomas and Tundras. Not only they are super reliable they also have really good resale value. You can get a new or relatively new Tacoma or Tundra. Drive it for 4-6 years and it has like 140,000 miles on it and then you can trade it in and get at least $5000 for it if not more if it’s in good condition. Or you could get say a ford ranger or Chevy Colorado, drive it for 4-6 years put 140,000 on it and go to Trade it in for $2000-$5000 max.

Bought a used 2010 Corolla and drove it to 200k miles with only a $50 repair and regular maintenance. At around 160k the brake light switch went out. I never had any other issues with the car. I purchased a 2009 Corolla with 30k on it for 10k in 2012. I sold it for $9800 in 2014 with 90k miles on it ( still under the Toyota 100k certified warranty) Changed the oil, wiper blades and one set of tires. In 1998 I purchased an 1984 Corolla with 200k miles for $250. The junk yard gave me $50 for it in 2001. It had 310,000 miles and the original clutch. They sold the lights hood, doors and trunk and drove it around the junk yard for years. It was a rust bucket but everything worked. Even the Ac.

The fit finish and quality of toyotas is the best. Every.light switch and gizmo in my camry still work like new. I got my drivers license in 1975 and owned lots of good looking cars. They often surprised me by just not wanting to go anywhere. In 2012 i did buy my first Toyota, plain and a bit boring. The most i did spend on service was €331,- in one year that was including a airconditioning service. My frends say ‘you can afford it treat yourself to a nice car’. I....am going to treat myself to a no worry lifestyle. Nobody’s jealous becouse I am a kind of stupid. Yes i am boring to maybe.

The only reason people buy a toyota vehicle *At least most of the time* is because they are reliable and the consumer has a peace of mind that the purchase decision they have made will last and speaking financially, the consumer has a guarantee that the vehicle they have purchased will last.

A lot of the "Toyota (and Lexus) is boring!" results from their consistently high sales. If Alfa-Romeo sold 400,000 cars a year, like Toyota sells Camry's, you would call them "boring", too.

Purchased a new 1972 Toyota Celica. Toyota upsized from 1.8 to 2.0 liter engine. Every 15,000 miles, needed a valve job. Sold car before third valve job. Toyota did not cover the design flawed engine. The cylinder heads were redesigned with valve seats that self destructed. In 1973 , $430 for a valve job was expensive. Toyota did not measure up to the hype for me.
