How Truck Caps (toppers) Enhance Pickups for the Outdoors

Wired2Fish's Kyle Peterson decided to add a new cap to his aging, but always reliable 2001 Toyota Tundra. His reasons are many, but equipment security, protection from the elements, ability to overnight camp in the bed, and roof rack storage are tops. Kyle gives us a full walk-thru of his new cap, and some of the features he selected to enhance his vehicles overall utility for fishing and hunting.

Thanks for sharing your ARE truck topper. Where in MN did you get your topper? I’m interested in the same one - it appears to be a CX Classic. Is the finish also called Matte Black Line X?

I have an old 97 Toyota T100 that I mostly use for carrying things. The same truck got into an accident and showed up at a local junkyard. Pretty much the entire body was trashed except for the topper which was above the accident and in great shape. I wanted it, but that sucker is too heavy for me (and you). There were two guys near me wandering around looking for parts to strip and I said "would you like to help me carry this topper?" Shockingly they said yes. So now I have a nice Leer topper with matching green paint and Thule racks on my truck. Cost $100 plus I gave the guys what little cash I had on me. I'm concerned I will have to lay some things down to carry them, but other than that it should have lots of benefits.

First time I went to my lease in Kentucky last year me and my buddy slept in the back of my truck for 3 nights. Cozy in 40 degree weather. I really like mine (older ARE) . Have the roof rack as well.

looks good, is the cap surface easy to keep clean and maintain? I ordered a Leer which was suppose to be finished in a matte black paint but when the cap arrived Leer applied a liner coating to it.

Hi I just got the MX topper installed along with those side windows plus same coating. But I must be an idiot cause I can’t figure out how to open the center glass. Even pulling on the tab. Did you have to remove something locking the center glass closed?

Which rubber u-channel are you using along the long lower lip of you topper? I just brought a used topper for my truck and I have to seal it up. There a large gap between the lower lip of the topper and the sides of my truck. Theres nothing on it now. I want to close that gap and protect the edge or lip of the topper.

I've tried pickups, SUVs and find that a FULL SIZE cargo van is perfect for hauling stuff. Less windows means less peeping toms.

Yes, someone tried to bang in my door locks but didn't get in. Pissed me off as I had to replace the side sliding door handle. This happened when I had the battery out charging on my work bench so the alarm was inactive. Yes, I live in a shitty neighborhood.

I just installed a century cap on my 6 foot bed on a 19 Tacoma from a 2000 Chevy s10 that I got for free on Facebook marketplace I just painted it black with plastidip and had to just trim 1/2 inch off the rear window a lot better then paying close too 2k

If a window glass pane is broken it is SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS to replace it. Be warned. There are no parts available, you have to order the whole windoor from an ARE dealer and have it installed. Absolutely ridiculous.
