I was at that game. I was in the same class as Rudy, Class of 1976. I knew Rudy but we were not friends. I met him a few times when I snuck into the Nautilus Room in the ACC and he was in there working out (I was not a football player and only football players could use the Nautilus Room, the rest of us had to sneak in and hope to not get caught). I was in the stands for that Georgia Tech game. What he says at the 09:55 mark is absolutely correct! I was in the Student Section. We did NOT start chanting, "Rudy", until after he made that play and the announcer came on and said a few words about him (e.g., that he had served four years in the Navy, he was 27 years old when he made that play!). I have told people this for years, but many want to believe the movie (i.e., that people in the stands started chanting, "Rudy" to help get him in the game).

It is a great story, and it IS TRUE that Rudy got his grades up and got accepted as a 3rd yr transfer to Notre Dame, walked on to the football team, got to dress and play on the last play, in his last game vs. GA Tech, helped sack the QB on the last play of the game vs. Ga. Tech, and was carried off of the field on his team mates shoulders. ALL OF THAT IS TRUE.

Yes there were true facts included in the movie. But there were also false facts. After all, this was not a documentary. It was a feature film where the director and producers were allowed to add embellishments to make it more entertaining and hopefully earn more money. Some of the major false facts included: 1) the Notre Dame football players never turned in their jerseys to Coach Devine in an attempt to get Rudy to play in one game; 2) the groundskeeper named Fortune that mentored Rudy and gave him a job to work in the football stadium did not exist. He was a composite of multiple people who mentored Rudy, 3) Rudy did not have an older brother who gave Rudy a hard time early on. 4) The film showed how Rudy had to work to be able to pay for his college education at Holy Cross and Notre Dame. However, Rudy had served in the Navy before college and earned G.I. Bill educational benefits that entitled him to obtain a four year college degree tuition free.

However, having been an undergrad in '75 (OSU) myself, the first thing I noticed about the film was "why does everybody's hairstyles and clothes look more like '65?" Look at the 1975 ND team photo. Rudy himself had longer hair. Couldn't the director have showed photos/film of the actual team and said "hey, look like this?"

If most people do not know by now that Hollywood takes creative license even with true stories, they need to not watch movies anymore. As many have said here, would we have even watched the movie if they made it 100% accurate? Highly doubtful. People would gripe how boring it was. Rudy is a classic today. Rudy got some notoriety and cash out of it for his life. Cool for him. We got a nice rah rah story that many will relate as they try to make it in their lives. How can this be bad or wrong? It isn't.

The GI Bill doesn't "cover your tuition." It is a certain dollar figure, based on which iteration of the GI Bill you are talking about. Generally speaking though, in order for the GI Bill to cover someone's tuition, it needs to be a very inexpensive school. Like a Community College. Otherwise, it contributes to a persons tuition. And for an expensive university like Notre Dame, it would not come close to fulfilling the entire tuition.

Everyone I know who participated in the Vietnam Era GI Bill basically claimed it paid for their college education. Considering Notre Dame's tuition base for the 1974-75 year consisted of $1391 in tuition fees per semester, an average of $580 for room and board (depending on hall) and other miscellaneous fees totaling $54 dollars, coming to about $3995 for the academic year, I think it could be true.

The Omission of the G.I. Bill is a shame. Because some of the best people this country has produced were helped by that one assistance from the government that No One should have a problem with supporting. It's the only govt. help program that you have to earn to receive. It's not given to you, you earn it Before you're entitled to it.

It's a line, not really much of a fine line either, if it's a true story then make the film as accurate as possible without compromising what makes the story special and film worthy in the first place, don't say "Based On A True Story" as it has become a contorted phrase. Condensing timelines, events, even characters to a certain degree can help the story without sacrificing its integrity, but when lies and manipulation of truths and personal character become necessary for the films true story, it ceases being a true story and more the "Inspired By True Events"

Rudy still had to eat (more than most to keep up with the big boys btw). Remember, he did Not have a rich daddy. Yes, ND is a pricey private university, and the G.I. bill paid the tuition, but it didn't put a roof over Rudy's head, etc. He had to bust his ass in other words, and that's plenty heroic.

Good video ;-) but...the famous play didnt happen exactly that way, the memorable chant of his name didnt really happen, he didnt have to work or worry about money, he didnt have an older brother, and in fact was the oldest himself, the coach actually liked him, his father actually supported him, the black guy that befriended and encouraged him that worked for the school was a "composite of everyone that encouraged him" and didnt actually exist, wasnt the last game of the season, weren't all the actual teams that they played, he was actually in the navy, the famous uniform scene never happened, the motivational speech never happened....hell, his name isnt even actually Rudy....the only thing I can actually see as "true" in this story is that: at some point a guy played for 0:27 seconds for Notre Dame. Everything else is garbage. Wtf...

Sounds like a little more than 8% embellished. Navy? G.I. Bill? Boxing? No older brother? Janitor mentor and ex-Notre Dame player didn't exist? He wasn't carried off like a hero and nobody gave a shit about him? Next your going to say that he didn't really have a bad ass Notre Dame varsity jacket from the second hand shop! This movie was about 8% real.

I think it's fine if they embellish a little for entertainment/drama purposes so long as they don't go so far as to alter facts too much where it becomes too far from reality. They always put in the credits "based" on a true story. They don't say that this is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I find videos like this to pretty much be pointless, as the level of accuracy of such a film is unlikely to drastically effect one's abilities to watch other sports movies or what-have-you. This comes across as a "hater" not unlike the character played by Kevin Spacey in the movie "Fred Clause".
@DATAProductionsMedia5 жыл бұрын
I am sorry you feel this way and you are entitled to your opinion and irespect that! Thank you for your input, but if you were to watch the full video, you would see that I do not come off as a hater. I praise the film accepting its lack of absolute accuracy. Subscribe for more content tho ;)
