Today Mike looks at turbocharger wastegates and how they are used in a turbocharged vehicle application to control boost pressure. We talk about the differences between internal and external wastegates, how they work, installation considerations and we take a look at the internal components. We also check out the new line of wastegates from Garrett Motion who supplied us with a cool cutaway example of their new GVW - Garrett Vent Wastegate for our demonstration!

I was a super broke college kid when I turbocharge my 71 Datsun. I traded my time for a broken tile 38 mm two bolt wastegate that was cracked and then took the guts out of it and put it a no-name housing and it's been in there for almost 15 years. Diaphragm still good still makes the same amount of power and no added lag.

I have a question and I need your specialty opinion. The wastegate had started pulsating after I’ve turn up the boost to from 4psi to 10psi. A 4port boost controller was install via haltech 2500elite ecu. On 3rd gear, boost is set at 5psi and after 4k rpm it’s set at 10psi. But since the wastegate pulsating started, boost will come alot later in 3rd gear and I’ll have fuel cutoff around 6500rpm. Check engine light will pop up showing a code for INJECTORS 90% CYCLE DUTY. It has a 450lph walbro fuel pump and 1000cc Bosch injectors.. also on e85.

@@motoiq I’m using Turbosmart’s 45mm Hypergate with a 4 port boost solenoid controlled by Motec M142 to a Garrett G30-770. The only thing is the company who made my turbo kit welded the wg flange at a 90 degree angle on top of the .82 a/r turbine housing which isn’t optimal for flow. My fk8 k20c1 made 686whp 575 ft lbs on Church automotive’s hub dyno with a di and port injection full E85 fuel system with a surge tank.

Right now I’m having issues with stock turbo and wastegate solenoid creating this type of shaking of the car at high rpm. Shop told me it was the downpipe causing the issue. Have no idea how to fix this please help!
@motoiq

You don't use a divorced downpipe with an external wastegate, the wastegate has it's own exhaust that you can dump or merge back into the downpipe. For a stock turbo, switching to an external wastegate would be difficult and not worth it.
