I know I'm late to this Berserk vs. Twitter thing, but it is kind off a constant thing for Twitter to criticize things they don't understand, so I thought It would be funny as I hear so many people still talk about Berserk being bad because its violent or whatever, meanwhile ignoring all the context for which the story takes place.

To be fair I see a lot of people who fail to try to understand Berserk and just see it as a power trip... I think a surface level read of Berserk can have some pretty bad impressions and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. As francois truffaut once argued. "You can't make an anti-war film" Because everytime you do it ends up as a pro war one. Starship trooper always comes to mind. While I don't fully agree i think the matter about making an anti war film is about perspective showing the horrors of it from the perspective of civilians for instance. I think he makes a point. Berserk makes a claim against power and revenge but in doing so... Is also a power fantasy story with themes of revenge. It's a shame it never finished because we really can't say for sure how it would end up and if these ideas would be fully justified. I for one think kentaro miura was simply trying to create a dark, brutal, and oppressive world. One where goodness is scarce and cruelty is plenty where trust and comfort are punished. And I believe he made that world because he wanted us to reflect on this world. It's up to us ultimately to use our strength to decide how our world is. I think people just don't like violence and r@pe existing in media or art at all... Which while I understand why i feel art should never be censored or limited... Yah know so long as nobody is being directly harmed in the creation of said art. Evil grows in ignorance. If we just wash away all the bad thoughts then we will only create a society of people who obsess over them. Tell kids not to swear and they'll learn every word they can.

100% agree, it's just gore and personally the stuff that really hit my feels are the ones that are more meaning or just plain cool. Everytime I see Zodd (I'm not done with the manga yet) I just stare with awe. Anyways, this stuff is deep and I feel like there's multiple philosophical takes in berserk. Personally, I've found some existentialist/absurdist ideas in here (Especially in chapter 83 but I've heard it wasn't canon) especially since Guts is such an empowering character that his birth is a rebellion against the universe. Any thoughts on this? I'd be glad to hear about any personal ideas you formed about Berserk -- shit is deep man.

To be fair some people in the community do make jokes or even fetishize the various rape scenes. But at the end of the day people online need to just accept that not everyone is as prim and proper and savoury as they want them to be, in fact, I think trying to force people to be like that is kind of wrong in it's own ways. I don't make the jokes or fetishize, but it's important to have a healthy separation of fiction and reality, someone could go on a killing spree in a video game, doesn't mean they'd ever consider it IRL, most people on twitter are teenagers though, you're being morally brigaded by teenagers who think the new cool is being a massive 90s soccer mom about everything, they'll grow up.

0:29 to be fair if you were to describe this scene to someone without previous knowledge of berserk they'd laugh uncontrollably too Edit: OK I feel like people aren't understanding me so let me clarify; I'm not talking about the contents/panel itself. I'm talking about if you were to describe it to someone like, say "A girl nearly gets raped by a demon possessed horse" that's what I'm talking about. I don't think the actual scene itself, nor the context behind said scene funny, but trying to describe it without it sounding a little silly is pretty difficult

The problem I see with twitter users on berserk is two things 1. They don’t actually give berserk a chance and do a surface level view of it. They see out of context gruesome manga panels and don’t take in the context going on. ALL OF THE GRUESOME IMAGERY YOU SEE OF CHARACTERS SUFFERING IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE YOU FEEL TERRIBLE AND GUTTED. That way when you see the characters rise from that, they feel more powerful from it. 2. They have my hero or demon slayer pfps.

The problem is Reddit and Twitter cant think for themselves and just expect to be spoon fed propaganda of what to think instead. Berserk is fundamentally a story to think for yourself in reading. Putting you in constant moral grey areas or just scenes of horror in Guts' place to see if you would do the same as him, or even survive a single night with your sanity intact. This shows you what your character lacks in doing this.

I think it's just that there's a lot of people who have absolutely no literary analysis abilities lmao. This happened not too long ago when people tried to claim Attack on Titan was pro fascism and genocide because there was fascism and genocide in the manga despite the manga literally being as anti fascist as possible. No sane person looks at Marley and goes "yeah they really have it figured out over there". No sane person looks at Eren Yeager and thinks "oh no yeah he's got the right idea"

I think AoT is amazing for taking the risk and showing the audience how someone with a genocidal mindset could be formed, and from that person's perspective. It's such a ballsy move, and it requires a lot of (sometimes misplaced, tbh) trust in the audience's intelligence.

AoT is both. It gives different perspectives and let's the audience decide which side they agree with. It's called nuance. AoT criticizes pacifism just as much and you completely overlook that eldians would be genocided if it wasn't for Eren. There's no side you can take in this scenario that doesn't end in genocide. I don't understand how anyone can watch/read season 4 and they just block out whenever it's mentioned the world will annihilate the eldians, unless they do something. Maybe you need to rewatch it.

Even tho I agree that they weren't needed I still think that they made a nice addition to the overall story. The creator choose to put them there so we wouldn't forget just how dark and horrible the world of Berserk can really get. It gives the reader this sort of shock value which I think is a great thing hecause if someone elses work can make you feel any sort of emotion then that just means that it is a well made story. I will never understand twitter for trying to cancel something that has been publishing for 30+ years and still is after the death of it's original author. Like if you don't like something then just don't enteract/associate with it or in other words gnore it. Berserk makes it's theme known in the very first chapter of it's release so if it isn't something thats for you then just don't read it...Nobody is forcing you to do anything so why is it their first instinct to go on social media and start bitching about it? This is of course not meant towards you but cancel culture in general I just don't understand those people man.

@@GokuSolosAnime yeah, but unlike a lot of “edgy” manga, who use rape and murder for fantasies of their Japanese Incel author; Berserk actually shows the true horror and evil of these crimes, and how they leave lasting trauma on innocent people. I didn’t feel dog man or rape horse were needed for the story, as I saw them as cheap shock value, uncharacteristic for a normally deep narrative. However, as neither is portrayed as a good thing, I can understand why someone would believe it would be structurally sound to the narrative as a whole, and still subversive to 99% of the overly edgy, incel, self-insert crap that a lot of mangakas are shitting out these days.

To be fair, evil dog man was waayy too over the top. Like, okay we get it, he's a r*pist, you don't need to show us LITERALLY EVERY TIME HE R*PES SOMEONE. Or the amount of times Casca gets sexually abused after the eclipse. Like, so many random dudes Casca meets turn out to be more r*pists, and with her mind being gone mentally restorting to a baby, it just feels like she became the fucking fleshlight of the story for a few chapters. Like, it got to a point where it's just like jesus christ, this poor girl can't catch a fucking break, EVERYONE IS (trying to) R*PE HER. It was getting kind of ridiculous, even Guts assaults her at one point while being possessed. I just don't get what the purpose of it was. If it's to make us feel bad for her, we already did. If it's to show how vulnerable she is and how she constantly needs someone watching and protecting her, there's other ways of doing that that don't involve more sexual abuse. I know Berserk is a dark and horrible story. And we already know women in this medieval, cruel world are subject to this sort of thing a lot. And I respect Berserk for portraying those things realistically. Women aren't always strong badasses who can just beat the bad guys and get away. More often than not, women are helpless and weak. Cause, ya know, biology. But it just felt like it was way too much. It got to a point where I was like, "ugh, ANOTHER r*pe scene? This is the third one this chapter!" Not trying to knock Miura, tho. This is just one of the pet peeves I have about this story. Even Miura himself said he thought he went a little overboard with these scenes.
