Why was the USA so successful during the Cold War? It implemented the Marshall Plan to economically strengthen its partners in Europe. The USA was the largest economy and opened its market to the products of its allies. The USA offered its allies a security umbrella with nuclear deterrence through NATO. As a result, America managed to push back the influence of the Soviet Union on Europe and ultimately win the Cold War. The alliance between Western Europe and the USA is proving difficult these days. For example, Germany follows a mercantilist economic model and is therefore dependent on cheap energy and large export markets. Russia and China can provide both of these for Western Europe like no other country. The USA, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly less important as an economic partner. And since the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is no serious military threat from Russia to Western Europe. Nevertheless, tens of thousands of American soldiers are still stationed on German soil in hundreds of US military bases and US nuclear weapons. If you look at the situation objectively from the US perspective, America is protecting Europe from the countries with which it has close trade relations. Europe's core interest, however, is to further expand its economic relations with the USA's biggest competitors. Don't be blinded by the politicians' rhetoric. Feelings, shared history, values, culture and traditions play no role at all in whether alliances really work. What matters is whether the interests coincide. And it turns out that the interests of Europe and the USA can no longer be reconciled today and this partnership will soon end.

On 6/5/24 The UK signalled (in a coded response in the Independent 6/5/24) that we "no longer regard the bridge as of logistical importance to Russia". Draw your own conclusions about the nature and level of threats Sergei Lavrov made to the ambassadors of the UK, US, France etc on 5/5/24 regarding our missiles being used against Russian territory. The French (for Macron's recent bellicosity) were ordered to send their ambassador to Putin's reinauguration ceremony (he was the sole Western diplomat in attendance).

He's surrounded by yes men who feed him what he wants to hear --- he is beyond reproach , never criticized , no oversight and hides behind one of , if not THE largest propaganda machines in the world , churning out lies and distortions 24/7 . His decision to launch the full-scale invasion of Ukraine was based on a series of disastrous miscalculations .... the greatest believing Ukrainians and Russians are one people , who were artificially separated by the fall of the USSR. Far from welcoming Russia’s invasion, the Ukrainian nation united and rose up in resistance. Now that he's been slapped in the face with reality , Putin's propagandists attempt to paint Ukrainians as not Russian , rather sub-human , less than , a bunch of Nazeees and people (who in truth lived side-by-side with ethnic Russians & little problem) were committing genocide and atrocities on poor ethnic Russians. It's sad knowing how great Russia could be without a ruler using the blood and misery of millions in an attempt for self aggrandizement.
