I only smoke cigars, and I’ve never smoked cigarettes. I started cigars after the age of 50, and only been smoking for a little over a year. I did notice one health advantage, and that was my anxiety went down to the point of I no longer have to take medication for it, so cigars are worth the risk for me. For that reason, I think cigars are healthier than cigarettes or vapes. With those, it’s a compulsive thing. People are inhaling smoke from 1-2 packs per day, every day for DECADES. When you’re an occasional cigar enjoyer, and make it a monthly, or even weekly habit, it’s way less dangerous. Plus, with vapes, and even cigarettes, there are filled with potentially harmful chemicals and dyes. Cigars are mostly natural in color and ingredients. Personally, I only smoke a cigar once every 3-6 months or so. Mostly because I hate smelling like smoke the next day.

Some friends and I were recently discussing cigars as a form of _self care_ relative to the general risks of tobacco use. In addition to the obvious _puff versus inhale_ observation, there is a certain meditative quality to the _ceremony_ of properly enjoying a cigar...an almost Zen-like process of savoring and perfecting each step...focusing on the subtle textures, flavors, and aromas, _breathing intentionally,_ being present in the moment, and maybe even taking time to reflect and appreciate what we _have,_ rather than constantly chasing _more._ Americans are great at _recreation,_ but we generally suck at _relaxing!_ Meanwhile, I just saw a video in which Steve Harvey compared the stress relief of smoking a cigar...to Yoga.

In 2022, the NIH published a meta-analysis of studies, including a total of 13,935 tobacco users and 18,691 control subjects (non-smokers), dividing the former group into three subgroups; Cigarette Smokers, Cigar/Pipe Smokers, and Cigarette AND Cigar Smokers. The last last group predictably had the highest rate of lung cancer, but surprisingly Cigar/Pipe Smokers did not have a statistically higher rate of lung cancer when compared to the control group. Turns out that whether one _inhales_ makes a monumental difference. Having said that, to be fair, Cigar/Pipe smokers _do_ have a higher rate of oral/esophageal/pharyngeal cancers. People who smoke two to three cigars _per day_ are about seven times more likely to develop such cancers...which is still about half the rate of cigarette smokers. In context, that means (at most) 84 out of every 100,000 regular cigar smokers will develop cancer, and 21 of them will die within five years. However, as mentioned, that's smoking two to three cigars per day. I average fewer than one per week, so my risk is of developing cancer from smoking cigars is mathematically about .5% higher than that of a non-smoker (roughly .125% by population). For me, an adult who knows the risks, the benefits with regard to my mental/emotional health and reduced overall blood pressure are well worth the risk. Frankly, like most Americans, I'm far more likely to die from complications due to heart disease. In fact, since nicotine is also an appetite suppressant...and since food and cigar smoke interfere with each other's flavor profiles, which makes me avoid eating when smoking...even my risk of heart disease is potentially reduced by the occasional cigar because it makes me eat less. Of course, now I'm just rationalizing, but the point is that my risk of cancer, relative to other potential causes of death _and_ relative to cancer rates among non-smokers in negligible. HOWEVER, that's for _me;_ among _regular_ cigar smokers, the rate is more worthy of consideration. P.S. I genuinely appreciate your concern. Not kidding. Sincerely, thank you!

I know I shouldn't be smoking pipe or cigars because I have asthma. Both affect me just a bit. Cigarettes however just tare me up even if I'm around them. I think the biggest thing is that pipe and premium cigars in my mind is they are 100% tobacco. I also dip/chew and do that more than smoking. I wait till after work to enjoy a pipe or cigar. I know there is a risk, but its slight or at least that is what I've been told. That's my 2 cents.

I had 2 humidors full of cuban cigars that I carted around multiple postings over a decade that I didn't want to toss and it was full on pandemic so I started having a whiskey and cigar in the afternoon. 7 days a week (I guess that makes me an alcoholic although I don't crave the booze). Now I'll have a whiskey and cigar in the afternoon and one after dinner. I am sure I'm screwed, but my Mom and Grandma both smoked all their lives. She was 80 and my Moms 76 now so hopefully I got those genes. It would be interesting to see how those studies progress particularly for my situation.

Don't worry as long you are responsible. Heres a personal story, I smoke cigar 2x a week, i tend to drink on a tuesday and a saturday, tuesday is pre mediation before stress comes down from wed-saturday. I personally drink 2 shots of fireball and i light up an alec bradley medium-mellow on a tuesday. By these numbers I don't think anyone would say that cigars are "safe" bringing any kind of smoke into your body is gonna have an effect on it. But I think you could say exclusively using cigars is "safer" than cigarettes. It would be nice if there is a study that does a better breakdown between cigars and cigarettes in the future or even just looks exclusively at cigar smokers vs non smokers and take into account 1 mortality and 2 which group has generally higher relative happiness, cause cigar enthusiasts have that one in the bag.

Hi Tim, I just read a research article titled, A cigar a day keeps the doctor away! Very informative and they suggested that the relaxing and enjoyable effects of cigars are very good for mental health, and in turn, physical health. In addition, I learned that nicotine without all the chemicals contained in cigarettes is beneficial in several other ways including better memory and contration, helps with depression, less aches and pains as it s an Anti-inflammatory, and because it is an anti inflammatory, less risk of covid and less chances of hospitalation in the event of covid. I also read in other articles that nicotine users are less likely to get Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It was suggested up to two cigars a day if not inhaled are safe and I totally believe it all. I am an avid cigar smoker and enjoy 1, now sometimes 2, Full Bodied cigars (usually 60×6) every evening for the last 30 years! I am so much happier and feel younger and in better health than I did in the previous 30 years!! I feel great, need no medication, and people think I'm 40 years old at age 60. @@munnumkhalid well you have a choice always whether you decided to bring it down into your lung. Personally I can only inhale during the first 3rd of the cigar. Then as strength skyrockets (I smoke the heavy duty double or triple maduros), i smoke it properly by just pulling into my mouth, tasting it, letting the intense nicotine be absorbed into my body through the lining of my mouth while enjoying the flavorful powerful hints of coffee, chocolate, pepper. and fruits to name a few.. in this case, size doesn't matter, it's the choice to puff and taste or inhale. Takes a while to appreciate cigars and the awsome flavor and nicotine buzz they provide for us to savor!!

I have to say, kudos for being a lot more objective and realistic about the downside of cigars than most other channels that rely on promoting the theme of their channel. I think the last point you made is a big one and unfortunately many don’t realize that about smoking pipe, cigar and hookah. Yet the risk factors, in my opinion, mostly change in quality and unsure about quantity. Meaning, it may be effecting the lungs less therefore reducing the amount of risk for respiratory diseases but I think they may pose just the same amount or more (based on usage) risk for throat cancer, etc. I think we all agree with the overall sentiment, though. More research is needed so we guess less and know more.

You hit the nail on the head! Basically nothing is good for you when it is abused... and some things are the lesser of two evils. Not having some sort of treat (a cigar, dessert, alcohol, etc.). Harm Reduction is the new model- and it seems to really help people live life to the fullest. One example that is cigar related- Steve Harvey was asked why he smokes cigars- and he said that you have to have something that can (essentially) ground you. He pointed out he does not do drugs, he does not abuse alcohol, and he does not have a side-piece. These days- one line of blow... or even drinking to the level of poisoning... That can kill you on the spot. Cigars don't tend to do that.

I'm curious what the number of exclusive cigar users were in that 43000 test subjects. It kind of matters. Sure, maybe 176 cigar users is really small compared to the total amount who died, but that says nothing about the percentage of exclusive cigar users in the test who died. If 95% of exclusive cigar users died during the test, these numbers would mean something completely different than if only 5% died. Not inhaling is the biggest difference imo. I'd also like to know more about the rate of oral cancers for cigar exclusive users vs other types of smoking related disease.

I think the primary health difference with cigars between cigarettes is that you ARE NOT supposed to inhale the smoke. A cigar is for its flavor; it’s supposed to be puffed lightly and sustained, a cigarette is rapidly smoked and pulled into the lungs. Without trying to rile up aficionados, a cigar is basically a big lump of tobacco. Of course I’m not putting a fat, unfiltered draw into my lungs, that’s practically suicide. I tell every cigar newcomer I meet; if you inhale the smoke, you’re doing it wrong.

I could be totally wrong here but, to me, it seems like these epidemiological studies to very little to establish causation and instead just show correlation (or lack thereof). I do not know very many individuals who smoke EXCLUSIVELY fine cigars, as well as don’t drink alcohol or drink at healthy diets. It could be that the mortality of exclusively cigar smokers is so low simply because there are so few of them. Just my 2 cents and reasons why I will always be on the lookout for even better information than what is presented in these studies. All that said, I am still very confident that cigars aren’t nearly as bad as other things one could do

I was raised under a religious roof, and our beliefs aside, was taught that anything tobacco related was extremely bad for your health. For the most part this is true, as I'm pretty sure most uses are in fact very bad. So I would turn away at any sight of tobacco. After taking a step back and looking at it more objectively, I have come to the realization that there are plenty of other things I do in my life that have the same health risks as tobacco (although not as severe as cigarettes). I drink a lot of soda, don't exercise as much as I should, and sleep more than I should. These all have health risks later in my life. That helped ease some of my fears of tobacco, and I have seriously considered giving cigars a try.

I wouldn't try cigarettes though, just look at a list of all the additives cigarette companies put into them which is available on Wikipedia. The only ingredient in a good cigar is tobacco. And of course the glue that holds the band on. I haven't tried any tobacco products myself, but cigars have recently peaked my interest.

@@Jarmint yes exactly. So the question now is, is just tobacco alone bad for you?
@Jarmint Жыл бұрын
@@Ultimate_Aviator It's certainly not good for you, but I do not know to what extent just tobacco alone is bad for you. I don't think it's too bad, seeing as there are many examples of people who smoked cigars leading long lives. Winston Churchill lived to the age of 90.

I dont smoke cigars very often. But they are a connective mental regulation for me. Where I reconnect with my uncle, who is no longer with us. Cigar is yoga to me.

Level of exposure equals level of risk. MODERATION is the key factor. You eat 50 cheese burgers a day, your gonna have a problem. Great vid 👍

Thanks John. Couldn't agree more.

here in our country old school grannies would gather up in a area back then and smoke cigars. the cigars were like 1 meter long and they pass it around and have 2 people holding it while the other smokes Ahaha but sadly since our country put a ban on tobacco that old tradition has stopped and the people that grew tobacco had to destroy their plants which is really sad. badass grannies tho.

Cigars won’t bother you if you’re just doing regular stuff, but when it comes to pushing hard on aerobic exercises however it definitely takes away some lung capacity (until you stop having 5 a day and discipline yourself to only have 1 after your day’s workout)
@markmetternich7629Ай бұрын
No effects on lung capacity unless you inhale, which you shouldn’t! Of if you sit in smoky rooms all the time without proper ventilation. There’s no connection with lung capacity whatsoever.

I'm 70 and stopped all smoking which for me was cigarettes, cigars, and pipes at 50. Sometimes I wonder at the the age I am now why not enjoy an occasional cigar or pipe. I'm going to die soon enough anyways at my age so just how bad could it be. What I might die a year sooner then I otherwise would?

I was an aged care worker in my country for a few years. I looked after a woman who was 99 years old for the 6 months I worked in her facility. She smoked a stogey fatter than a chimps forearm every morning and every evening religiously. Her husband told us she smoked like that for the entire 75 years he had known her. To be fair she only had 2 teeth in her head but other than that she was in better shape than people 20 years younger than her.

She probably would have lost her teeth anyway. They just get more fragile as we age.

It’s great to have the knowledge. I will continue to have cigars and red wine in moderation, two things I enjoy. Richard Overton (oldest American veteran of World War II) lived to 112 and smoked a dozen cigars a day.

Lol that is so wild. 12 cigars a day. Chain smoking stogs!

I have always heard and seen that people that smoke cigars and pipes where always people that lived until they where 97 or older
@TJS82Ай бұрын
@craighayward2 I`m 42 and recently smoked a total of 3 cigars (my first in about 14 years) and have even recently developed an interest in pipes and pipe tobacco so, if by the grace of God I might live a little longer because of it (or even in spite of it), so be it!

I think about this so much, I have to have a Gran Cojonu just to relax and calm down.

If you die young from too much sex, cigars, and good liquor.....youve lived a good life
@TJS82Ай бұрын
@Simpleldeaz Add good food (in my case, a blue rare ribeye steak`s a prime example) and/or a good tobacco pipe to that list and you`ve lived better than most kings!

I believe one of the big differences between inhaling and not inhaling, is the amount of surface area of mucus tissue or tissue that absorbs things, that the smoke contacts is so much greater in the mouth plus lungs compared to just the mouth so less would be absorbed.

My Grandpa died when he was in his early 50's. My dad told me he used to smoke a pack a day. Rest in peace grandpa. Now for my Friend's grandpa, he said he would smoke a cigar on a Sunday, once a week. He lived up to his late 80s. It just depends on how much you do something and the person I guess. 😅
