I keep looking at Unison pastels and being put off by the price - but this shows exactly how labour intensive making them is, and the reason for that price tag. What a soothing and meditative process it is.

The whole process is a delight to watch, but I was truly mesmerised by the curious cutting tool that squares off the ends. Then seeing them all lined up with their little paper collars attached gives a deep sense of satisfaction.

In a more recent video, Jim explains that they use two palette knives with what they call a stick (that's the proper length) to cut the pastels. The ends are gathered and rolled again and again so nothing is lost :)

Thank you for your comment Lewisia, it's great to see behind the scenes of suppliers and manufacturers - especially when the process is still done by hand. All the best, the Jackson's team.

i love Unison. Really. beautiful colors. But I decided to stop buying brands that did not inform their customers about the pigments used. Manipulating Cobalt, Chrome, Cadmium, Antimony unknowingly is quite dangerous especially with the volatility of pastel dust...

Watching some of the workers manipulating the pastels while maskless worries me greatly, especially as artists are told to guard against breathing pastel dust. Even with excellent ventilation and high humidity, exposure to all those pigments - especially the ones containing heavy metal compounds - must be hazardous to employees' health. I do hope Unison has strict health and safety guidelines in place to protect their workers.

You can’t breathe in pigment while it’s wet, it’s basically in paint form then.
