On 10 January, India’s retail payments umbrella body The National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI) issued a circular that paved the way for wider adoption of homegrown payments platform UPI. So far, only Indian phone numbers were allowed on UPI, leaving out non-resident bank accounts linked to their phone numbers abroad. In the first phase, phone numbers from 10 countries including Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the US, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the UK have been allowed to be used on UPI.

The issue is when verifying the device for binding the app still uses the Indian phone number and just attaches the country code before and tries to send it to that number instead of the number with Indian country code. Same in BHIM as well. So this is not ready yet

Has anyone had success in registering with US Mobile number? PayTm does not accept US Mobile number at all and BHIM times out on registration. Looks like all talk no action so far.

THis is simply a propaganda. As of 15 Nov 2023, It still does not work at all for me (using either Singapore number or India Number). I tried from BHIM, PayTM, PhonePe. Does not work from any UPI app. When I spoke to the ICICI bank manager, they are not even aware of the NPCI circular and support for International numbers from selected countries. This is the ground reality whether you like it or not.

A load of rubbish. I live in Australia have both NRO and NRE accounts but have not been able to register for UPI payment. Neither my bank or PAYTM or Phonep will accept the phone which is registered with the bank
