Clarification: In my entire video I am not referring to college degree. College degree matters (as of 2021). Also there are certifications where you have to put lot of work to earn it, those also have positive impact. I am mainly referring to those certificates where you pay say 20$ or 1000 rs on some edutech website, you watch bunch of videos, there is a test that is very easy and you get a certificate. Such certificates hold no value. Think about this: You are a company hiring for data analyst position, you get 100 applications. 99% of them will have some or the other online certificate. They have become cheap and easy to obtain and in this world anything that is easy to obtain holds no value. That is the bitter truth! I want to save people especially from those institute who are scamming them to earn money on the name of *job guarantee programs*

I get what you are trying to say and totally agree that certificates will not get job. But just wanted to add that for someone who is from Non-CS field, certificates do help in at least getting interview calls and shortlisting (given that you've made personal projects too). For a Non-CS graduate, no one believes directly in skill until there's a little proof that shows you learnt some theoretical concepts. Resume gets dumped the moment you apply on a job posting.

Harshil, I understand your point but think about this. Say you are a company in banglore hiring data scientist with a lucrative package. You get 100 resumes for your job application. I gurantee all 100 resumes will have some certificate, these are cheap certificates that anyone can get by paying 1000 rs on some online learning platform. Now say you are an HR person scanning resume, how would you shortlist people for an interview? Every single resume has some certificate. My whole point is easy availability of these certificates have diluted its value. I look at my linkedin and I see everyone posting their online certificates and I clearly see its all inflated. I am not saying you should not get certificates, get it but don't expect that it will help you in job finding process. More efficient ways are freelancing, opensource contribution, kaggle competitions, hackathons, linkedin network building etc.

certifications can be good for students and freshly graduate, because mostly all certification have capstone project based on real world problem and scenario if you can do it its mean you know some stuff, hands of knowledge of particular skill and I believe most of companies wants hands on knowledge of particular skillset, those tiny projects can be a good way to reflect your skills and depth knowledge, clean code writing and many more things. that's all from my perspective and experience

All this is good for talk! Even I was like this.. but what I learnt is that certificates are like passport.. esp if you have go through the recruitment process.. In my own experience, I was not even getting calls until I got few certificates on my resume.. if you have few patents, or some attractive projects you can showcase, it’s good else certificates is one of the differentiation factor which will help you get into the hiring process.. the end result is ofc your knowledge and attitude..

@@codebasics I do agree your point that most people go thru dumps and decorate their cvs with certificates.. but still hiring managers filter out resume based on these things.. for eg, for an aws cloud engineering position, if 60 out of 100 people have aws associate certification, the 40% will not even receive calls.. out of that 60% if 10% have professional, they will be preferred and others will be filtered out.. to get the job, you need to clear interviews.. but you are right, most of these people do the certifications for the sake of doing it and it’s a shame.. I feel the first round should always be a coding or designing interview.. rather than qualifications or certifications.. but sadly, it’s still not the case..

Your opinion is biased and humiliating and condescending for people who work hard to study and gain knowledge. It's just a preference that one may like to do self study and one may like to pursue studies professionally under the guidance of a teacher. If you have a negative mind set for certifications you might be rejecting some deserving candidates who are working hard to study and get into a data science job. If certificates and studies don't matter for a job so is an interview then. 1-2 hours interview can't asses the whole ability of a person to decide the fitness of a candidate to do a data science job. You have to be open minded while interviewing people and see how capable they are of learning something. I would suggest that instead of trying to make a mockery of someone working hard and spending money to gain knowledge and dreaming of succeeding in their career you should instead be respectful and be more considerate in evaluating someone in interviews. If we go by your logic then essentially nobody needs to have any schools or universities and everyone can just do self study and clear job interviews. Interview is the most stupid thing to asses someone if an interviewer who already has a pre-conceived mindset that studying something can't fetch someone his dream job. Unless you give someone an opportunity to work how will that person get real industry project experience? Maybe after a year of working in real projects that person exceed even you. Some people are slow starters but great performers. Therefore an interviewer's job is not to decide whether certificates are good or not, instead see that whether a candidate has an acumen to learn and understand.

My friend you misunderstood my message..please watch the video again..nowadays people pay 20$ on udemy course and get a certificate. There is no value of it. I am telling you harsh reality..I never undermine someone's hard work. That's why I said having certificate shows you have done hardwork but at the end of the day how much you have digested matters. Contributing to opensource, winning hackathons, freelancing projects are probably better ways to gain reputation than collecting *easy* certificates. If there is a certificate from say reputed institute which requires hard work to earn it then definitely one should go for that. Now see if you earn that certificate you will definitely perform well in the interview. I am telling you whatever is the truth.
@n1984ster
@n1984ster 3 жыл бұрын
@@codebasics I agree with you...and I did listen to your point that knowledge has to be disgested as well. I also agree that your suggestions are good and correct. I saw your video on your data science journey and that motivated me a lot. I also agree with what you call as harsh reality. But I just feel that while interviewing one should be completely free from personal opinions. Interview should not only to evaluate a person's knowledge but also attitude and willingness to work hard and learn. If one has willingness to learn and work hard, knowledge and performance will come automatically. Imagine so many people are desperate to achieve something and perform and support their families by doing a good earning job. Simply rejecting someone in interview because that person tried to gain knowledge by certificates is wrong. An interviewer has to be open minded.

But what if I don’t hv any IT background neither experience? I have a finance background so I think I’ll be needing a certificate in any data science courses to at least support that I hv a knowledge of it.

Many people have asked for this. I looked at their course work once and it seems to be pretty good. I am not sure about quality of education however. What you can do is go to my discord server and discuss there. There are 8000 members and someone would have done the course. It is best to hear from someone who is already doing this.

If there is any certification that requires lot of hard work to earn it and it is from reputed organization like Google Oracle etc then that would have value

Start contributing to opensource if you want to work on real projects. Or freelancing. Helping others such as NGOs for free is another way of getting real projects.
