I also hear vampire bat colonies are known to share blood meals with bats that weren't as lucky to get a meal, but there's also a system in place where if an individual bat tries to "cheat" by never reciprocating if another bat needs a meal, they no longer will obtain blood meals from other bats. I also recall reading that interestingly, vampire bats are relatively uninterested in human blood, and typically prefer the blood of ungulates such as horses, donkeys, etc.

Mythology about vampires doesn't always involve jumping and climbing in Europe or Japan especially before the give and take with America from 15th century onward. Myths about vampires exist all over the place since antiquity, not all of them had access to America and vampire bats. My comment was about vampires in media like literature which became popular mainly by 19th century onward. By that time these guys were known and their features were added to the stories of modern literature too. Which explains why Dracula climbs down like a lizard in Bram Stoker's novel while modern day vampires picture them not only climbing but also jumping around. And of course modern day cartoons and anime etc joined the chat

Why did they have to try and make this scary? Sure, bats can transmit rabies, but only .5% of them are carriers; the odds of transmission are pretty darn low, even with vampire bats. They don't target people, preferring larger mammals like cattle, pigs and horses, make a tiny little cut the animal doesn't even feel, and they only drink a few tablespoons' worth. A few tablespoons of blood from something the size of a COW! Plus, they look after one another; if a member of the colony is weak and can't fly out to feed, the others will groom it, and each regurgitate a little bit of food for it, so it can have a full belly. They're kinda sweet, really.

If it makes you feel better they have no interest in biting humans, numb the site, and because they are so tiny they only need two teaspoons of blood. Also, if you are really unlucky and get bitten there is a really small chance that you can get rabies (less than 1%). They also are extremely family oriented and are known to adopt orphaned baby bats whether or not they are related to them. Or feed sick members of their colony. Ironically, they are morally one of the best predators around. They mildly inconvenience their hosts (usually livestock), and go home to feed orphans and the elderly. It’s not their fault that they’re kinda creepy looking.

I think this segment was part of a longer piece about bats from South America.
