From Europe..but now living Vietnam and always huge respect for this heroic nation if you know about Vietnam history. For billions people in the world during decades Vietnam is always a symbol of victory and a heroism fighting for independence and freedom of their country. Surprising that always some toxic comments about Vietnam from some guys maybe who don't want to see Vietnam's success and development. Sounds like some losers don't like the fact that Vietnam is a successful country and special nation. They defeated the mongols 3 times in 13 century- the only nation who defeated and humilated 3 military powers in 20 century, defending their land: France in 1954, US in 1975 and China in 1979. That was a Vietnamese army who liberated the Cambodia from genocidal regime Polpot where 3 millions innocent people were killed. After 40 years of bloody wars for independence and embargo from us , from total destruction only 30 years living in peace vietnam is a new economic tiger now - a upper middle income country - PPP around 15.000 usd per capital according to IMF in 2022. More over, Vietnam is an important manufacturing centre in Asia, number 1 in South East Asia and one of the 20 top biggest exporters in the world with 350 billion dollars in 2022 much more than export from Thailand, Indonesia , Malaysia. Sure still problems but Vietnam has a very bright future.

I used to work in the container shipping industry. 10 years ago when I started my career, I told everyone to look at Vietnam and invest in the index funds related to Vietnam, everybody was very puzzled on my choice. 10 years ago Vietnam cannot take 20,000 TEUs ships from China to Europe. Now they have so many weekly services served by COSCO Shipping, CMA CGM, Maersk, MSC, etc. This is the hallmark of a economy developing. Vietnam will overtake Singapore very soon.

If you think Vietnam's economy is booming. You are wrong. They are just in the first steps. They invest a lot in education. I'm not talking about the government, I'm talking about their people, who spend a huge amount on education. A family here can spend up to 50% - 60% of the money they earn on educating their children. Investment in education like this will be a solid foundation for development. In my view, the economic boom in Vietnam will happen in the next 7 or 8 years when their investment in education shows results.

I was born in 1990 in a poor province called Quang Ngai. Growing up in the fields and watching a lot of changes, cassette tapes, VHS films, magnetic disks, Windows 96, 2000, the internet, Yahoo, IBM, USB... Economically, I am probably the one follow this change. Fist can of milk (ông thọ) I was use is 1997. Went to school and currently working for Samsung SEHC company now. Indeed, the economy has developed a lot compared to here (in 1996, my house had electricity). Nowadays, the generation younger than me is very good at both English and information technology. In my neighborhood, there have been many new houses built. Nowadays, there is a lot of access to technology such as smartphones and machines. This is why education in developed countries is much more advanced than the education system in Vietnam. The education system in Vietnam can also create talents but can't hardly go on top, due to having systematic thinking later in life. China is the same as Vietnam, but they have 10x population, as well as 10x number of talents, so they can develop at a much higher pace.

South Korea has had a war, but I won’t go deeply into it. Thailand never had a war, and Vietnam’s GDP will soon outpace them. You have to take history, and time to let the country grow. Imagine an economy that, in the span of a few decades, catapulted from one of the poorest in Asia to a growth rate of 8.02% in 2022, outpacing even the giants like India and China. This isn't a hypothetical scenario; it's the reality of Vietnam. With a GDP per capita that increased nearly tenfold from under $300 in the 1980s to $2,800 in 2020, Vietnam's economic transformation is nothing short of remarkable. But what's driving this meteoric rise? And can it weather the storm of global economic uncertainties? Join us as we delve into the fascinating narrative of Vietnam's booming economy. This is a story of resilience and growth you won't want to miss.

Corruption is everywhere, every country around the world, if you know how to live with it you will be fine. For example, you were stopped by the police for speeding at the Vietnam vs America match. In Vietnam, you give them some cash and move on. In the United States, depending on how fast you go, you have a small or large ticket, in which case you go to court for it, you have to pay the ticket and your insurance will increase, costing you time, money and sometimes ruin your life….

When you started from big 0, anything positive is considered as impressive. What is matter is how long would it take Vietnam to catch up neighbors like Malaysia or Thailand , let alone Taiwan, S. Korea,...? Vietnam today is the smaller China 10 years ago. Its growth is NOT organic but more the results of temporary low labor cost for foreign companies. 20% of Vietnam GDP is based on output of one company: Samsung. Imagine one day Samsung pull up its stake and move to another cheaper country like India or Bangladesh, what will become of Vietnam?

Time will tell, but I don't think it will become next tiger. Here is why, Vietnam is one of the most corrupt country in the world. Second, Vietnam depend on China to provide it most of the raw material and or hafl finished products for it final assembly, and alot of small manufacturers are those that move from China ( it does not wanted anymore). And finally but I think is the most important is that they are most relaxing easing going people (like the French) for nice speaking, however, for me, ex-Chinese Vietnamese, i would label them lazy maybetheylearnedit from the French people. They just don't want to work overtime. I believe that you have been heard that Vietnamese factory workers were on stike agaisnt Chinese owned ( just for political propaganda, media in the West never mention they also strike against Korean or Taiwan owned ). I hope my personal view on Vietnamese works ethic doesn't offend anyone, if so, I'm apologize.

Overtime work is already bad enough, imagine working your as off for a little money over something not even in your work agreement, not that it’s always bad though. In Vietnam we have never had strikes before, and I doubt work here is any easier than in Taiwan or China.

As a Vietnamese who went to college in the USA and now lives in District 1, I feel the need to say it once for all, that no matter how much the economy can grow, at the end of the day, the mindset of the Vietnamese will keep the society a third world slum. Why? Because of the indiscriminate littering, theft, and the lack of law enforcement to punish those who break the law. If Vietnam doesn’t have the strict law and enforcement like Singapore, it will remain a third world slum for years, if not generations to come. A country without the rule of law is a no good country. Let’s look at those third world slum countries and Singapore and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Well, but at least the serious crime will have no escape in VN, it's rather more peaceful country than most in the world.
