This show makes me cry. I actually really liked some of the first episodes. They are quite touching. But, this is not really the type of anime where not understanding Japanese would be a problem. Still, if you're learning Japanese, it would be a good idea to watch it in the original Japanese. And if you want to learn Japanese with me, I can send you some Japanese lessons where I teach you the kind of Japanese that Japanese people actually speak. Click here and subscribe bit.ly/39j92BM

I completely agree. Back when I watched this anime in 2018, I could tell she sounded very formal mainly because of her tone of voice, but I will say now that I know quite a bit and can speak a little Japanese, Yuta is definitely right when he says watching anime is a significantly even better experience when you do understand Japanese. Well that’s if you’re used to watching subbed over dubbed anyway.

I've seen an analysis video of Violet Evergarden and it was surprising, how close it is actually to reality. The video was in form of an interview, of a guy and a military veteran, analyzing each episodes (almost), even though the anime is a bit of an exaggeration, the essence of it is quite close to the after-war experiences of the vet.

Violet Evergarden speaks so polite in a way that when you are learning Japanese, her dialogues are quite easy to understand as Japanese language textbooks will usually start in teaching you how to speak Japanese in polite form.

When I started to get more into Japanese and understand the basics I started liking Violet Evergarden even more, the way she speaks says a lot about her past and her upringing, making an impact with any slight change of the terms she uses (I'm still a beginner but I noticed it in the latest trailers in couple scenes T_T). You really enjoy Anime on a different level if you understand Japanese huh

For anime not set in Japan, a video on how Horo from "Spice & Wolf" speaks Japanese would be interesting, if you're up for doing that. As I understand it, she speaks in a very old-fashioned way that modern Japanese people wouldn't speak at all.

It is a KyoAni work with the original story written by the only winner so far of the KyoAni grand prize. I don't think anyone expects anything less in terms of attention to details like this. The light novel paid attention to the dialogue of different people to make sure people's dialogue is close to how they would speak for their status in Japan. For the anime, the director mentioned that they added an Oriental (Japanese?) flavor to the setting so that Violet would stand out as being different.

Paradoxically, it seems to be because it's taken as the verbal equivalent of holding someone at arm's length, putting distance between the two people and thus coming off as standoffish. Staying in keigo for too long after the other person thinks you at least know each other well enough to speak casually is like pushing the relationship back to the beginning. Like "even though I've known you for so long, you're still a stranger to me." I had to learn this when I was taking Japanese classes (not helping is the fact that they taught us keigo first). The other reason is it can be offputting, which is also true in English. Being extremely verbose, articulate, and formal in any language can be, strangely enough for a speaking style based on precision, a barrier to relationships (though as far as I'm concerned that's the receiver's problem, not the speaker). edit: Third reason I just remembered is because it can sound excessively grandiose and exaggerated. Sorry for the wall of text, I was just trying to get in as much info as I could.
