You'll never see a prettier spiral than the one Warren threw. Would have been interesting if he did end up becoming a Seahawk. BTW the way this video reminded me of how Jim Everett almost became an Oiler, as he was drafted by them in 1986. But then a trade was worked out with the Rams after the 1986 season had already started. Moon had just arrived in Houston two years earlier, but the Oilers seemingly were already ready to move on after a couple of rough seasons with their new QB. You should do a video on that trade. I know Everett wasn't a superstar, but for a while he was a pretty good QB with the Rams.

It was so frustrating as a Calgary Stampeder fan during that time. The Stamps were a darn good team but they could never get past Warren Moon. He was the one player that would live up to an American’s perception of how a top talent NFL quarterback would rampage through the CFL. Joe Theismann, Joe Kapp, Doug Flute, Jeff Garcia, among many others are all great and left their marks on the league, but Warren Moon tipped the scales. Another side note to his career in Edmonton, was his shootouts with another fantastically talented QB that had to come to Canada to get any shot at the position. That QB was Condredge Holloway. He should have had a shot at the NFL.

You mentioned that Moon played for the Edmonton Eskimos and Houston Oilers, and that he almost played for the Los Angeles Express. The common thread for all three of those teams was Head Coach Hugh Campbell. I think that also played a role in Moon’s decision to sign with the Oilers.

Houston still had that Largent trade in the back of their minds. They weren't gonna let Seattle get away with this one. Lol

Not sure if it was intentional or not but, Warren Moon didn't go from quarterbacking Houston straight to quarterbacking the Seahawks. He actually had a very productive 3-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings (1994-1996). I know it's not really a crucial part of the story you're telling here, but it is an important part of HIS story.

I felt that way too, but turns out DeBerg actually retired after briefly playing for the Dolphins while Marino was out with his torn Achilles in 1993. He went into coaching and was the Giants’ QB coach for the 1995 and 1996 seasons, under coach Dan Reeves. In 1998 Reeves, now in Atlanta, needed a backup QB, and DeBerg un-retired and became a Falcon. He had turned 45 by the time Super Bowl XXXIII rolled around. He didn’t play, but set the NFL record for oldest player on a Super Bowl roster. Brady will probably break it in a couple years, but I believe that record still stands for now. What a strange career DeBerg had! He held the reins until Joe Montana was ready to play in San Fran, then in Denver till Elway was ready, then in Tampa with both Steve Young and Vinny Testaverde on the roster, then started for the Chiefs for a bit, then back to Tampa with Vinny still there, then with Craig Erickson, then Miami as an injury replacement for both Marino and Scott Mitchell. Then came back after being a coach.

With regards to Warren Moon, he's on my Mount Rushmore of best Edmonton athletes. The other three are, of course, with the NHL Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980s: Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, and the GOAT of the NHL, Wayne Gretzky (and several other members of those 1980s Oilers teams come close)... Between the 1970s-1980s Edmonton Eskimos and the 1980s Edmonton Oilers teams, there's a reason why Edmonton was nicknamed the "City of Champions."...

Ridiculous that he didn't make it to the NFL out of U Washington. No, he's had his issues, and wasnt often clutch; but, man! He really was a great QB, and how much better would the old SheHawks have been if they'd snagged Moon, even back in 78'? Gosh, think about Seattle in 83' - 88' with a truly elite QB. Curt Warner & Steve Largent, a very good defense that had *63* takeaways in one season!?! Oh well, a what-if lost to history...

Facts. That mentality still lingers in the NFL; most recently seen with Lamar Jackson.
@flagcoco693 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you said it, otherwise I would have had to, and I would have delivered a long-winded history of the lack of back quarterbacks in the NFL up until, what, Doug Williams wins the Super Bowl with Washington? Before the 1978 draft, how many black QBs were there in the NFL? James Harris was the first to start, that was with I think the Rams in like 1975, just a few years earlier. Bottom line: The NFL simply was not ready for Moon when he came out of college. It was never about Moon having to go to the CFL to prove himself; it was about the old men in the NFL getting it through their skulls that skin color had nothing to do with being a good quarterback.

My understand was that Moon signed before that NFL draft, not that he wasn't drafted. Also, as a lifelong Colts fan, I would have always like Luck instead of Wilson. Wilson would have gotten killed just like Luck. Luck would have multiple titles with the Legion of Boom. Unfair comparison. Ryan Grigson and Pagano were just bad.

Never knew that story--No question that without the guaranteed money that Moon couldn't take the deal. And yes, Dave Krieg was really solid and a good QB. He was consistent and played well...but he was not Warren Moon. All makes sense why Moon did what he did....definitely like the Andrew Luck/Russel Wilson analogy.

Warren Moon is My all time favorite QB to bad the NFL was against a starting black QB at the time Moon played. He entered the NFL later in his career. To bad because he could've had more time to maybe win a Super Bowll. 6 years that the NFL missed out , Moon never should've been in Canada playing football. He still made the Hall missing 6 years of NFL football lost STATS so to speak his Canada StATS should be in the NFL O Well. Warren Moon's deep ball was insanely perfect. Warren Moon was a close to perfect passer of the football yeah I know no Super Bowl win ,like I said I wonder if he had those extra years in the NFL he might have won a S B Ring. The NFL didn't think a black Quarterback was smart enough 😂 Smfh . . . . in 1997 playing for the Hawks Moon at the age of 40 years old he had 26 TDs that's like throwing for 40 TDs now days because teams back then ran the ball so much more. Warren Moon now does all of the Seattle Seahawks games on Seattle radio. I think he said in this video Moon doesn't call games anymore Hmmm 🤔 I'll have to look that up.
