Abe's diplomacy was god tier. Kishida was sometimes criticized, but he was not that bad. Ishiba is not good at diplomacy because he doesn't speak English and he's a nerdy type.

Why do I get the feeling Miyake was trying to make excuses after excuses for Ishiba? This guy is the typical entitled oyaji who didn't realize he was outside Japan. The UK PM, Thatcher, was always told by her advisers to not bother remembering the Japanese PM's name when she met them, because it'll be a different person at the next meeting. I don't think anyone at that meeting needs to remember Ishiba's name.

When someone greets you, you stand up. Good heavens, at a time when Japan needs to be more outward looking, they couldn’t have elected a more seemingly insular individual.
@Unmighty1Күн бұрын
outward looking? why is that?
@oretteayton526223 сағат бұрын
@ In my opinion, I think it’s vital that Japan replicates what it has always done historically. Japan has always taken ideas from other countries and demonstrated innovation domestically; all the way from its writing system to its successful automotive industry. This is what I mean by ‘outward looking’, but gestures do matter and this PM comes across as insular.
@cboy0394Сағат бұрын
@@Unmighty1 Because it's economy is collapsing, it's population is rapidly shrinking, it's losing it's place in rankings (most powerful companies in the world, most innovative car companies, top universities in Asia). If Japan doesn't change it will continue to be left behind. It will become an irrelevant country.

As a Japanese, I envy those democratic countries because they are allowed to elect their own leaders. Our PM was elected by the house of parliament. We never had any chances to choose our PM.
@sailingadventurer2 күн бұрын
It's cause Japan follows a parliamentary democracy. You elect MPs, they elect prime minister. This is followed in UK, Australia, Germany, France etc. This prevents the existence of duopoly that exists in USA. This is the reason why Japan scores higher than USA in democracy & freedom index

He didn't do anything bad or blunder somewhere. It's just him in a different way that's not clear what his mood really is. # Great meet with Xi Xinging, Ishida just looked at the paps, while Xi was confused in the mood and tried to make eye contact at least in the end but Ishida didn't bother. Xi was completely off.

The Japanese PM Ishiba never smile in the APEC events, looked stiff, unfriendly and social awkward. Not a down to earth person, he doesn't even know the manner of standing up when other country leaders come to Hi him. Would voters go for him in the forthcoming election?

At the APEC summit, I saw many heads of state taking the initiative to say hello and shake hands with the newly-elected Japanese Prime Minister to show their friendship. This should support and build confidence in the Japanese prime minister. It feels like a good scene.

Shinzo Abe was the last great prime minister they had and they failed to protect him; it will take some time before Japan sees another politician of that caliber again.
Pretty pathetic. Most people outside of Japan were shocked by how he was undiplomatic and rude to other heads of state. In G 20 and APEC meetings a few days prior as well. How do you miss the final meeting and photo session at APEC. FOR going to a cemetery. He could have gone there right after the meeting concluded. How idiotic
