As a correctional officer there is a difference between both correctional and prison in some ways but not in others. Correctional facilities are still prisons but they have programs to help prisoners gain skills and trades to be able to rehabilitate into society when they get out.

This makes me miss all the ex-convict friends we had. Three guys that were Bloods. Two Crips. Four Hell's Angels. Three Los Muertos and a Chinese Triad guy. All of them would hold cookouts, or cook around the holidays and send us food since we all lived within a few miles of one another. We'd regularly - yes, all these people from opposing gangs - would regularly meet at the house of my neighbor, a Hell's Angel, and we'd all just eat and talk, talk about our year and so on - and usually if someone was having a hard time? These gang members from rival gangs would pull a wad of 100s out of their pocket and be like " How much you need? " if it was financial issues. One time when I was 15 I brought up " I wasn't able to get the laptop I wanted this Christmas, but maybe next Christmas. Unfortunately when I was really sick this year I spilled chicken soup on my cheap laptop and it broke, so now I can't spend time with my online friends. " Everyone kinda wordlessly look around, then Lee ( Asian man. Chinese in particular. ) - reaches into his pocket, pulls out two-hundred dollars. Mike ( Neighbor ) does too. Everybody at the table pulled out 100 or 200 dollars and hands it to me and goes " Merry Christmas, kid. Go get your laptop. " by the end I had 1800$ ( Not everybody from the friend group I mentioned was there, so y'know. ) - but back then? Being handed 1800$ was more like being handed 2500$ with how much mileage you could get out of that level of money in 2010 - 2013. I remember thanking everybody profusely, then I went and purchased a- I think it was ROG. Republic of Gamers laptop that for the time was AMAZING. Had about 500$ leftover, so came back to them a week later with the money and said " Do y'all wanna divvy up what's left so I'm not just sitting here with y'all's money? " and they go " Nah, just keep it. " - So then I had enough money to throw into my bank account and buy a few games off of Steam to start my Steam library, plus I think around that time I had to purchase a secondhand Xbox 360 because mine red ringed ( Like most original 360s. ) and I found one for only 75$ and just swapped my hard drive over onto that one so I didn't lost all my Halo 3, ODST and Reach achievements. Lol. Just been lucky enough even as an adult to never run into the more violent members of gangs. Go figure, if you're just a genuinely friendly person, they don't wanna fight. Seeing members of rival gangs leave all that crap outside and just eat dinner with one another while chatting like family was probably the strongest anti-racism message I could've witnessed as a child - and mind you I grew up in Texas where people supposedly think the worst of the worst racists are. ( That'd be more Midwest / the North. You know, where a lot of " Sundown towns " are. )

My dad used to be an iron worker and did the iron work at the jail in the city next to me. He told me how they purposely left places open and hid drugs and smokes and other things in it while building it just because they thought it was funny. It was 2006 and a minimum security jail in Snohomoish County. It's one of the many stories my dad told me from working and one of the many things he built, or at least help built
